2 – (June 9) Right to bear arms or legislate right to ‘bare arms?’

Americans insist that their constitutional right to bear arms cannot be violated. Meanwhile, more and more Americans being shot is an all too common event in the USA.

A perfect solution is non-existent. But can the number of violent gun crimes be reduced? How?

Five people were killed in Orlando at the beginning of the week. A disgruntled, fired employee, John Neuman, 45, had been a military vet and did not have a permit for his gun. He shot himself at the scene of the crime.

Consider these statistics:

IN ONE YEAR ON AVERAGE
31,537 people die from gun violence
71,386 people survive gun injuries

IN ONE YEAR ON AVERAGE
2,829 kids die from gun violence
15,428 kids survive gun injuries

EVERY DAY ON AVERAGE
282 people in America are shot
86 people die from gun violence
50 children and teens are shot
8 children and teens die from gun violence

The 2nd amendment of the American constitution guarantees that every citizen has the right to bear arms. Gun regulations exist in the US, but they may need modification. There is no possibility of the repeal of the amendment.

Can solutions be found? If eliminating these violent crimes is not possible, is there a way to reduce their occurrences? Until then, the USA is doomed to endless repetition of Columbine, Sandy Hook, Pulse nightclub and Orlando murders.

What do you think?
