We always caution the SENIORS students we teach to be very wary about the risks of computer hackers. Read this article to learn a bit more about how risky computer use can be: HACKERS
We urge our computer user seniors to do some things regularly to minimize their computer risk and here are the areas to attend to.
- PASSWORDS
Regularly manage, update and change passwords. Use a password manage to really safeguard your computer work relative to password use. We highly recommend
LastPass password manager. Password are the key to many areas of work on computers and hackers view passwords as ‘low hanging fruit ripe for their picking.’ - FINANCIAL DATA
Regularly reconcile, examine, review and monitor all online financial accounts: bank, credit card, etc. particularly those which require a password. - ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMS
Use and regularly update antivirus and malware software. These programs are easily found on the Internet, can be free, but be certain of the site from which you are downloading them. - SUPPORT FROM INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
There are a few cable/Internet service providers, BELL and ROGERS, best known to Canadians. These internet service providers have support staff to assist you with your computer needs. BELL even provides an antivirus program as part of its Internet package. - GET HELP IF YOU NEED IT
Don’t feel embarrassed or badly if you need to get help with computers. Even the “pro’s” use coaches to assist them and help them improve. Get help. Your local cable/Internet service provider can be a source. So too you can get help on the Internet. Take a course or hire a tutor.
