Pickering’s own magazine

Wow, talk about impressive. Kind of like attending a ‘black tie affair’. . . that’s the new PICKERING’S YOUR CITY magazine is.

The first issue is really impressive, a very high quality publication with well written articles and excellent photography.

How do they do it financially?
Your City is completely funded by advertising. Therefore, the magazine is free. Almost all the ads are locally based and  are relevant to local readers ranging from caregiving residences to the large local shopping mall, the Pickering Town Centre.

Contents
Determine the contents of the inaugural magazine had to have been a real challenge for the publishers but they hit the mark from doing the cover story about the mayor to hitting the major issues, concerns and topics relevant to the city. The airport issue is covered. The new community of Seaton, a place to grow, live and work. The surrounding communities that make Pickering so ‘livable and interesting.’

Greetings from the city council
The councillors of the city send their greetings.

Climate concerns
Pickering is climate change aware and working positively in that regard. Even drinking straws are a concern at the city’s largest mall.

The airport question
The issue of an airport in Pickering has two sides: business development and increased employment vs pollution and loss of viable farmland to increased commercialization. The magazine presents an excellent case as to why the pro side deserves very serious consideration.

Seaton
Seaton is the development north of the city, home to new business and new residential development. It will become a significant commercial and residential center within a few short years. More information about Seaton is available at  SEATON.

The city’s neighbourhood
Pickering is surrounded by some very interesting and historical hamlets, Balsam, Brougham, Cherrywood, Claremont, Green River, Greenwood,  Kinsale and Whitevale. The magazine describes them in a warm nostalgic way.

The Pickering Public Library
The central library of Pickering deserves more recognition and awards than it already has received. It is a technologically advanced portal to a world of information. Yet, it still retains the warmth and character of an ‘old time library.’
