Lifespan – Why we age and why we don’t have to

It was only after I finished reading the first section that this well researched non-fiction book became an unexpected treat.

Part I WHAT WE KNOW
The first section Part I WHAT WE KNOW discusses the scientific reasons about why we age. It was quite technical even though the writer tried to explain science for the general reader.   As I didn’t completely understand all the science I found this section confusing and intricate.  The next two parts were much more interesting.

 Part II WHAT WE’RE LEARNING
Part II WHAT WE’RE LEARNING discusses present issues relating to longevity.  Specifically, how fasting, exercising, eating less protein, stressing the body through cold, the use of specific supplements and physical stress can increase longevity.  The history and research behind each technique were fascinating.

Part III entitled WHERE WE’RE GOING
Part III entitled WHERE WE’RE GOING explained some of the concerns that society will face in a world where people live longer.  It certainly caused me to think about the future.  For example, What effect will electronic vehicles have on our life span?  Who will pay for our retirement as people retire at 65 but live to 100?  What effect with artificial intelligence (AI) have on our lifespans? How will greater longevity affect world economies?

This was a mind-expanding book that interwove science, diet, business and economics in a manner understandable by the general public.
