Synopsis
In the history of the United States, only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett has just become number five. His body is found in his remote lakeside cabin. There is no sign of forced entry or struggle. Just two dead bodies: Judge Fawcett and his young secretary. And one large, state-of-the-art, extremely secure safe, opened and emptied.
One man, a former attorney, knows who killed Judge Fawcett, and why. But that man, Malcolm Bannister, is currently residing in the Federal Prison Camp near Frostburg, Maryland. John Grisham is a lawyer-turned author, a very successful one at that. A number of his best-selling books have been made into movies, The Pelican Brief. The Firm, The Client, and more.
His books are never disappointing…until I read this one. Grisham has spent a lot of time creating a story based on a plot he may have dreamed up over cocktails in the Caribbean. The story is about a black con convicted on possibly false evidence and who concocts a scheme to steal a tremendous amount of money from a fellow con. It’s story that is linear in development, with no real twists and turns but one which does keep one entertained. Readers will remain engaged because Grisham is that good of a writer. His household shopping list likely reads more interestingly than our best efforts at writing a story.
