Editorial comment: We wish we could pass on the compliments on Lindsey’s work. It is asking a lot but we would rather see the issues causing the food bank patronage successfully resolved rather than complimenting their efficient operations.

The event was tremendously well-attended by federal, provincial and municipal politicos and representatives from many organizations from the Pickering Durham region: Jennifer O’Connell, Peter Bethlenfalvy, Shaheen Butt,  Regional Chair John Henry and Ajax Councillor Nancy Henry (not related). As well, there were numerous politically aspiring candidates in another political arena: Raveena Rajasingham, Ruchi Wali and Nancy VanRooy. Then too, there were members from a number of the City ratepayer associations: Craig Bamford, Gary Winsor, Abdullah Mir. And an educational trustee, Emma Cunningham. Next, Margaret Shedden Eskins , DARS. Last but not least, so many people, Barbara Twiner from the City’s gardening association and city activist Richard Szpin.

Finally, kudos to so many volunteers, from Cathy Bamford to Frank, her stalwart hamburger flipper, to Bethlenfalvys exec assistants, Adam Bradley and Scott, who was doing his best on the wurst stand.

Then, we would be remiss not to mention that volunteer stalwarts gave explanatory tours of the Food Bank’s inner workings.

This was an event to attend and enjoy. It was a celebration of the strong support people give the St. Paul on the Hill Food Bank. As importantly, it reinforces that the people of Pickering care; they care about their needy residents and support endeavours that give them assistance. It also was an opportunity for important political leaders to show their support for the needy. It’s great to have such wonderful residents and elected representatives who understand and believe we are our brothers’ keepers. However, we hope the politicos bring the message back to the powers that be that we do not want to celebrate food bank successes as much as we like to celebrate the end of the need for them with effective government policies and programs.

Nevertheless, to all the people behind the scenes and who attended as invited guests, thank you for your hard work and support.
