Queen’s Park is foot dragging on a very important law code, especially important for Pickering as the City grapples with a controversial councillor. The provincial government has been asked to amend The Code of Conduct to include a removal of councillor clause based on violations of the Code of Conduct as set by the province.
The City of Pickering council has members who feel Councillor Robinson has been detrimental to the work of the municipal council. More energy, time and money has been devoted to dealing with Robinson than the Councillors feel is justifiably warranted. More serious is their claim that Robinson is a supportive of racist and hate issues and want her removed from Council.
Editorially speaking, the Council may be correct in that Robinson has taken positions that may seem to be hate and racist in slant. Her justification when criticized and attempts are made to silence her is that she has the right to free speech. True, but free speech has limits and reasonable limitations. One cannot yell “Fire!” in a crowd without proper reason. One cannot segregate or isolate LGBTQ positions at the expense of the general population. Promotion of individual causes cannot be to the detriment of the great society.
Queen’s Park should move on this review so that the arbiter of the Code of Conduct can examine and review Robinson’s actions as a city councillor.
