Thank you donors who contributed to my Poppy/Canadian Legion campaign. You helped raise a couple of hundred dollars for the campaign. I have sent what I received to the Canadian Legion, Br. 606.
As I close the POPPY CAMPAIGN for this year, a few thoughts float around my mind.
One, being chastised for asking for donations and told I was embarrassing and shaming people into donating. That is so ludicrous of a comment, it doesn’t deserve a response.
Donations were far below what I expected or hoped. Teachers are doing their job when it comes to history and Remembrance Day. Students are learning and responding accordingly.
But something still doesn’t fit. Maybe my site is not reaching enough people. Maybe people are more financially strained than I thought. A loonie for a Poppy seems like a stretched lamentation.
Finally, Don Cherry’s words come to mind when he said, “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada; these guys paid the biggest price.” Cherry was fired by CBC, our national network!
There was no shaming or embarrassment intended in my request for Poppy donations. But if the shoe fits, wear it!
To those who donated, thank you…on behalf of the veterans, the Legion and its members, and all of us who cherish Canada’s national traditions of honouring and paying respect to our military service people.
Thank you.
Thank you!!!
