TOWN HALL REPORT, Mar. 19

Unfortunately, due to an auto mishap, I am unable to give a first hand report of the Mayor’s recent Town Hall. However, the executive assistant gave me needed help with some of the questions and answers from the event.


Purchase of Frenchman’s Bay?

Mayor Ashe provided an update on his plans to purchase the Bay and his request to the provincial and federal government to provide funding, so that it can be returned back to public ownership. Mayor Ashe was asked about the purchase of Frenchman’s Bay and if there is a back up plan funding from the province and federal government. Mayor Ashe is hoping to receive an update following the provincial budget mid-April and would expect the federal budget soon after the election.

What will the plans be for the surrounding lands of Frenchman’s Bay?

Mayor Ashe says we have some areas that are rented by OPG and perhaps the other areas will be utilized for community events and spaces. The Mayor is open to all suggestions from the community but no plans at the moment.

What is happening with the investment in Elexicon?

Resident would like more updates on the possible sale of Pickering and Ajax’s shares. – Mayor Ashe says that communications will follow once we have more information.

What is the Future of the Mall?

Mayor Ashe says that we will be having more stores incoming and that the hope is that the condominiums connecting to the mall will bring more foot traffic. We have already seen new stores such as JD Sports, Lulu Lemon, and Pickleplex Pickering bringing a new energy to the mall.

What are the latest plans for the Petticote Creek planning?

Mayor Ashe says that TRCA would like to keep the uses more passive, instead of an active conservation area with ongoing activities. He would like to see it returned to what it once was with the pool etc on site.

What is happening to improve Pickering’s Waterfront Parking?

Residents asked about increased number of accessible parking spaces and parking passes for guests that can be renewed for longer than one year.

What is the latest action on New Development and the delays in opening schools?

Mayor Ashe mentioned that 14 school sites have been identified for Seaton, but that the school boards cannot move forward until the need is determined by the Province. He suggested also reaching out to Public/Catholic Trustees to share concerns.

What is the latest information about Pickering’s New Public Square as part of City Centre?

Discussed City Centre project that includes a public square, and a refrigerated rink in the winter and an area to host the farmers market.

Driving Pickering roads is a challenge: how is the city planning road Resurfacing?

Residents asked when roads will be resurfaced. Mayor Ashe discussed the budget per year for road resurfacing and the process in which roads are selected for repairs/resurfacing.
