Background and Links

Ontario Power Generation is applying to renew the operating license for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station and May 8th is the deadline to send written comments to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. If you would like to make a presentation during the hearing – either in person at the hearing in Ajax or by zoom – you have to make that request by May 8th.

Astonishingly, Ontario Power Generation is asking for a license term of 30 years!

Your comments can be very brief – for example, your comments could be simply an objection to a 30 year license term for four nuclear reactors – or they can be very detailed. Your choice. But you have to submit them by no later than 11:59 pm on Thursday, May 8th.

The Hearing notice is HERE. Your submission / comments go by email to interventions@cnsc-ccsn.gc.ca.

The public hearing will be held June June 24-26 in Ajax, Ontario.

A “Part 1” hearing was held on March 26th. The video recordings are HERE.

  • The hearing documents are on the CNSC web site under “Commission Activities” (then click on hearings and scroll by date) HERE and are copied and pasted below.

There are a LOT of documents! One of the key documents is the report Ontario Power Generation prepared for the CNSC prior to the the Part 1 hearing in March. It is HERE. Another key document is the report prepared by CNSC staff at the same time. It is HERE.

If you start with the CSNC report, you will find their summary at the beginning, and several other interesting reports included in the very long pdf document. For example:

  • at pdf page 139 you will find the Environmental Protection Review Report
  • at pdf page 465 you will find the 2024 update to the 2020 Environmental Risk Assessment.
  • the Darlington NGS Probabilistic Safety Assessment Report starts at pdf page 644
  • the DARLINGTON NGS PERIODIC SAFETY REVIEW SUMMARY REPORT starts at 768
  • a Supplemental Update in Support of the Licence Renewal Application starts at pdf 826
  • the May 2024 application to renew the license starts at pdf 929
