PICKERING: Pickering benefits from OLG gaming revenues

Pickering, ON, August 26th, 2024 – Last weekend, the City of Pickering proudly celebrated the significant community and economic benefits of being a host gaming site through a cheque presentation at the PARA Marine Search and Rescue Waterfront Festival.

Since the opening of the Pickering Casino Resort in July 2021, the City of Pickering has received non-tax gaming revenue payments totalling $47,974,125 from Ontario Lottery Gaming Corporation (as of June 30, 2024). These funds are part of the Municipal Contribution Agreement with OLG and represent a significant investment in the city’s future.

The City of Pickering is reinvesting these revenues into the community, supporting many local programs, initiatives, and infrastructure projects. This reinvestment enhances the quality of life for Pickering residents by funding everything from parks and recreation to services and cultural events. PARA Marine Search and Rescue is among many community recipients benefiting from this agreement.

Since 1967, PARA Marine Search & Rescue has been dedicated to saving lives and ensuring safety on Lake Ontario, with volunteers on call 24/7. Over the years, they have saved over 200 lives and assisted more than 3,000 people in emergencies. The funds received from OLG have been instrumental in supporting their programs and initiatives, including the recent Waterfront Festival, which attracted thousands of residents and visitors this past weekend.

“The benefits of this partnership extend far beyond the casino floor, leaving a lasting, positive impact in every corner of our community,” said Mayor Kevin Ashe. “These funds have allowed us to directly enhance our city services, strengthen our infrastructure, and back the community programs that enrich the lives of everyone in Pickering. These enhancements are also complemented by the Pickering Casino Resort and Durham Live, which have revitalized our city, making it a dynamic hub for tourism and boosting local economic growth.”

“Every year, 100 percent of OLG profits are reinvested in Ontario to support provincial and local priorities,” said Kathleen Devine, OLG’s Senior Municipal Relations Manager. “OLG’s profits are hard at work in the City of Pickering and all across our province to build stronger communities. OLG is proud to see how Pickering is making investments in critical local infrastructure, vital municipal programs and community festivals that benefit all its residents. Much appreciation goes to the employees at Pickering Casino Resort whose contributions are also helping make the community that much better. When you play at an Ontario casino, you play for Ontario.”

During the 2023 calendar year, casino revenues have been used for the following Current and Capital Budget items:

  • Funding for 24 community groups as part of the City’s Community Grants Program
  • Snow clearing program for seniors and persons with disabilities
  • Construction of Beverley Morgan Park track replacement
  • Consulting for City Centre project
  • Purchase of bush mulcher
  • Payout to the Region of Durham (revenue sharing agreement)
  • Bill 23 revenue loss top-up

The 2024 Capital and Current Budget includes over $21 million of projects to be funded by casino revenues, including the Beachfront Park construction, Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex tennis court replacement, Brockridge Community Park Parking Lot Improvements, City Centre Park (Design), Petticoat Creek Master Plan, grants to community organizations and the snow clearing program for seniors and persons with disabilities.

As the gateway to the east GTA, Pickering (population 100,000) is strategically located where Toronto, York and Durham Regions meet. An award-winning municipality, Pickering is slated for significant economic and residential growth, offering an unparalleled quality of life for those who live, work, and play here. Its dynamic City Centre has been designated by the Province of Ontario as both an Urban Growth Centre and Mobility Hub and continues to evolve as a preferred destination for creative learning, memorable events, and unique experiences at the heart of a vibrant, connected, and engaged community.

PICKERING: Councillors Brenner, Butt and Nagy celebrate Casino donation to City of PICKERING

Councillors BRENNER, BUTT and NAGY at the PARA MARINE SEARCH AND RESCUE celebration

Pickering celebrated the “significant community and economic benefits” of being a casino site with an oversized cheque presentation at the PARA Marine Search and Rescue Waterfront Festival on the weekend.

Since the opening of the Pickering Casino Resort in July 2021, the City has received non-tax gaming revenue payments totaling $47,974,125 from Ontario Lottery Gaming Corporation (OLG), with a 2024 first quarter payment awarded July 19 for more than $5.5 million.

The funds are part of the Municipal Contribution Agreement with OLG and represent a “significant investment” in the city’s future, noted Mayor Kevin Ashe.

“The benefits of this partnership extend far beyond the casino floor, leaving a lasting, positive impact in every corner of our community,” Ashe said.

The City reinvests the revenues back into the community, supporting a wide range of local programs, initiatives, and infrastructure projects and funding everything from parks and recreation to services and cultural events.

PARA Marine Search and Rescue, which has been saving lives and ensuring safety on Lake Ontario since 1967, is one of the many community recipients benefiting from the casino funding. The organization received $4,702 in casino hosting revenue this year.

During the 2023 calendar year casino revenues have been used to fund 24 community groups like PARA Marine Search and Rescue; snow clearing program for seniors and persons with disabilities; construction of Beverley Morgan Park track replacement; consulting on the City Centre project; the purchase of bush mulcher; and for Bill 23 revenue bloss top-up.

The 2024 budget includes more $21 million of projects to be funded by casino revenues, including the Beachfront Park construction, Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex tennis court replacement, and other projects and services.

Some of the revenue is also shared with Durham Region to be used for housing initiatives.

“Each and every year, 100 per cent of OLG profits are reinvested in Ontario to support provincial and local priorities,” said Kathleen Devine, OLG’s Senior Municipal Relations Manager, adding that the profits help build “stronger communities” in Pickering and around Ontario.

HEALTH: Wake up tired, sleep and fatigued during the day?

Not getting enough high quality sleep
Source: healthline [sleepy]

Getting enough sleep is essential for overall health. Unfortunately, many of us don’t get enough, which may lead to fatigue.

During sleep, your body performs a number of critical processesTrusted Source, including releasing important growth hormones and repairing and regenerating cells. This is why most people wake up feeling refreshed, alert, and energized after a night of high quality sleep.

Even though sleep time should be individualized adults should get at least 7 hours of sleep per nightTrusted Source for optimal health.

Insomnia is a term for any condition that causes difficulty falling or staying asleep. It can have several causes, including menopause, medical conditions, psychological stress, poor sleeping environments, and excessive mental stimulation.

If you’re experiencing insomnia, treatments like natural supplements, medications, and the management of underlying medical conditions may help. Visit your doctor to get the appropriate care and treatment.

Deficiencies

Nutrient deficiencies may lead you to feel exhausted on a daily basis, even if you’re getting more than 7 hours of sleep.

Deficiencies in the following nutrientsTrusted Source have been linked to fatigue:

If you are experiencing fatigue, discuss with your healthcare professional if it is necessary to test for deficiencies. Typically, fatigue related to a deficiency in one or more nutrients improves once your nutrient levels normalize.

Stress

Although some stress is normal, chronic stress can lead to fatigueTrusted Source. In fact, chronic stress may lead to stress-related exhaustion disorder (ED), a medical condition characterized by psychological and physical symptoms of exhaustion.

Furthermore, chronic stress may cause structural and functional changes in your brain and lead to chronic inflammation, contributing to symptoms like fatigue.

A therapist may also help you develop strategies to reduce stress. Many health insurance plans cover mental health counseling, and virtual therapy is also an option.

Underlying medical conditions

If you’re experiencing unexplained, chronic fatigue, you should visit your doctor and discuss your symptoms.

They may recommend testing to rule outTrusted Source certain health conditions that cause fatigue, such as:

Poor diet

Your diet significantly affects the way you feel.

To maintain energy and get the nutrients your body needs to perform critical processes, it’s important to consume a balanced diet high in nutrient-dense foods.

When you don’t obtain enough calories and nutrients like protein, your body breaks down fat and muscle to meet energy demands. This leads to losing body fat and muscle mass, which may triggerTrusted Source fatigue.

Additionally, diets high in ultra-processed foods impair energy levels. For example, a diet high in added sugar may harm sleep and lead to chronically high blood sugar and insulin levels, resulting in fatigue.

Following a diet low in ultra-processed food and added sugar but rich in nutrient-dense foods like fruits, veggies, legumes, and healthy protein sources may help reduce fatigue and support healthy sleep while providing your body with optimal nutrition.

Consuming too much caffeine

Although caffeinated beverages like coffee and energy drinks feel like they boost energy, over-reliance on them may make you more tired the next day. That’s because too much caffeine can harm sleep, which may cause fatigue.

Research shows that feeling tired in the morning leads people to consume large amounts of caffeine, which impairs their sleep cycle. In turn, you may overuse coffee or other caffeinated drinks for energy, which continues the cycle of poor sleepTrusted Source followed by too much caffeine.

While coffee and caffeinated beverages like green tea may benefit health when consumed in moderation, energy drinks are extremely high in stimulants and added sugar. Thus, you should avoid them whenever possible.

If you’re currently experiencing sleep issues and frequently drink caffeinated beverages, try cutting back to see whether it helps improve your sleep and energy levels.

Inadequate hydration

Staying hydrated is important for maintaining energy levels. The many biochemical reactions that take place in your body every day result in a loss of water that needs to be replaced.

Dehydration occurs when you don’t drink enough liquid to replace the water lost in your urine, stools, sweat, and breath. Being dehydrated leads to lower energy levelsTrusted Source and decreased concentration ability.

Although you may have heard that you should drink eight 8-ounce (240-mL) glasses of water daily, hydration needs depend on several factors, including your weight, age, sex, and activity levels.

The key is drinking enough to maintain good hydration. Common symptoms of dehydration include thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches.

Overweight or obesity

Maintaining a healthy body weight is essential to overall health.

Not only is obesity significantly linked to a greater risk of many chronic illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers, but it may also increase your risk of chronic fatigue.

Obesity greatly increases your risk of obstructive sleep apnea, which is a common cause of daytime fatigue. It’s also linked to increased daytime sleepiness regardless of sleep apnea, suggesting that obesity directly affects the sleep cycle.

Maintaining a healthy body weight may support good sleep and energy levels, while getting high quality sleep may help prevent weight gain and reduce fatigue.

  • Drug and alcohol dependence: People who are dependent on drugs or alcohol are more likely to experience fatigue.
  • Shift work: Shift work causes sleep disruption and may result in fatigue.
  • A sedentary lifestyle: Leading a sedentary lifestyle may lead to tiredness during the day. Exercising in the day can decrease overall fatigue.
  • Certain medications: Some drugs, including steroids, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants, are linked to side effects like insomnia and increased tiredness.

NEWS: Prepaying for refueling coming to PETROCANADA soon

It was inevitable. Theft has impacted on the rest of us. Drivers have been stealing gas…they pull up to the refueling station, refuel their car and drive away without paying.

Petro-Canada has ended this opportunity to steal gas. Coming soon, drivers will have to ‘prepay’ for their fuel before being able to fill their tank. Not inconvenient, as you should be paying for your gas but an inconvenience for those who aren’t sure how much gas they need.

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Dan Rather, retired newsanchor, may be laying it on too lightly….

Dan Rather. retired CBS news anchor, may be treating the topic too lightly in his commentary. This American election is another milestone, a historical position that will be huge in the annals of the history of the USA.

Rather makes solid points in his commentary but doesn’t underline how historical this election will be. Never mind that the campaigners are an unelected woman of colour running against a felon convicted of many criminal charges.

This election may be bigger than 2016 or 2020. One candidate is a woman again, though this time, she is a member of a visible minority. Americans, as much as they boast they are fair-minded and considerate of minorities, boasting hypocrites. Something is not right when half the population can be supportive of a misogynistic, habitually lying, insurrectionist-supporting sicko like T****. There is no way any normal person can support this type of candidate.

But to criticize the majority of Americans as being crazy would be unrealistic and unjustifiable. What is important here is WHY they support this seemingly unsupportable person. There’s a lot of smoke around this candidate, and as the expression goes, “If there’s a lot of smoke, there must be fire…somewhere.” With T****, the fire is blazing. To list all his transgressions would be of no value. They’re there, unending and ceaseless. That anyone could support such a candidate is unexplainable. But a significant number of Americans continue to support him.

This is the problem facing Harris and the Democratic Party. Calling the vast number of T**** supporters crazy or belonging to a cult has no value. It is what it is, so deal with it. Harris and her party are doing just that.

This is one tough election, again. The extremist vs the reasonable, the sicko vs the norm, the wacko vs the acceptable. Of course, this commentary is slanted. None can be otherwise. But the slant is toward the GOOD, the REASONABLE, the NORMAL. Harris is not a felon and is not guilty of any traitorous activities. Harris is a normal, clean-cut person with principles and majority-accepted ethical values. T**** is not. T**** is a scumbag with no visible scruples or ethical values. Both candidates may lie or exaggerate in campaign statements, but while Harris speaks it, T**** LIVES IT. One talks in exaggeration, and the other lives a life of exaggeration. Who could you support?

FERMO’s Desk: Mastering the BARKSIDE ( dog training session – George Ashe Library )

After attending this library event, I am thinking of telling my master, Richard, to get me a library card.
[NOTE: Trainer Lynda Kitson presentation text is linked at the bottom of Fermo’s description.]
[For best reading -> ]

Last night, Tuesday, August 20, my master, Richard, and I attended a dog training session with about 30 other dogs. It was held in the grassy knoll area behind the George Ashe Public Library in Pickering. The Pickering Library partnered with the City of Pickering Animal Services for this outstanding.

The event started early after all of us dogs had our suppers and did our walks. Good that we ate light because there were endless dog treats throughout the presentation.

Head trainer, great work

library logo

The dog trainer for this event was Lynda Kitson of Who’s Walking Who Dog Training in Ajax ( LINK ). Kitson had all the leashed dogs station themselves beside little pylons in a huge circle with her barking commands and explaining the material in the center.

Excited dogs but calmed with Kitson’s words
A couple of the dogs were a little overexcited, not like me. They were barking a bit and lunging a little. I was quiet, calm, cool and collected, but what would you expect from a senior citizen Scottie? I’m 12 years old, so I have seen a lot of this kind of training stuff. I have to brag: I’ve won ribbons, one for best tail waggers in puppy school, but I digress.

Lynda started the presentation by explaining why some of the dogs were so overly excited, and as she talked, those guys quieted down to a dog. It was surprising to see but gratifying because their owners were likely getting anxious too.

Content of the training session
Lynda talked about breeds and their traits, common dog behaviour and misbehaviour, training methods and how they have changed over the years, dog foods and treats, and finally, the dog training events of the evening began. [For those who may not have heard everything Kitson said, there is a PDF summary being sent to all the attendees, the human ones.]

Kitson’s goal for the training session
All five dog training routines had the same two things in common: positive reinforcement with treats and no dog-calling commands. Lynda’s point in the latter training was to teach both master and dog to be aware of and engaged with each other. Easy for humans but harder for us; as Lynda emphasized, dogs have the intellectual capacity of a two or 3-year-old child. That’s an insult to me, I have to say. I think I’m a lot brighter than that, though she claims we have a limited vocabulary of maybe 150 words. Don’t go puttin’ us down. Our limitations depend on our owners and how we are treated and trained.

Positive training, positive results
However, I have to give Lynda credit. She showed each dog owner that every dog there could easily do what was being taught and done with eagerness and enthusiasm. Of course, she used me as her model trainee more than any other dog there. I know why!

Many different dogs were attending, some pure breeds and others mixed breeds, but all of the dogs found the event productive, positive and a learning experience. I can only hope the masters, many of them couples, learned as much as we did.

The sporadic rain showers didn’t put a damper on any of us, dogs or masters. We all learned a lot, enjoyed the endless nibbles and had a fun time.

Compliments and kudos to the presenters & organizers
Kudos to Lindsey Narraway, head of the City of Pickering Animal Services, for arranging this great event. All of us dogs, along with the masters, thank her and the Pickering Library for such a terrific event for guys who don’t even have library cards, us dogs.

HEALTH: Top 5 ways to boost metabolism naturally

5 ways to boost your metabolism naturally

1. Do not skip breakfast! Picture your metabolic rate shaped as an ice cream cone. In other words, starting at the top – it is at its highest in the morning and starts to decline on a gradual level as the day progresses.

Unfortunately, most of us have a backwards approach to eating when it comes to weight loss and meals. We skip breakfast for a variety of reasons such as lack of hunger, a busy schedule or to save on calories.  While this may seem to make sense from a pure “calories in, calories out” theory, research has demonstrated time and time again that this approach will result in weight gain. Whether it is a protein shake, a yogurt and granola parfait or slow-cooking oatmeal – you need something to start your day off right.

2. Eat more proteinThe hormone glucagon is released in response to dietary protein, such as egg whites, low-fat cheese, lean meats, chicken, fish and protein powder. Glucagon signals fat cells to release fat into the blood, thereby promoting its use. In other words, more fat is burned and more weight is lost when you eat more protein.

3. Say good-bye to refined grains. Products made from refined grains, such as many breads, pastas, cookies and cakes, cause most people to oversecrete the hormone insulin. Insulin has the opposite effect of glucagon. Of its many functions, insulin is secreted from the pancreas to facilitate the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into the cells.

Glucose (a.k.a. blood sugar) is derived from carbohydrates and is the main source of fuel for the body. When too many of the wrong types of carbohydrates are consumed, such as refined white sugar and/or white flour, excess insulin is secreted to deal with the sugar. In short, excess insulin means excess fat.

4. Stick to low glycemic index carbohydrates such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains (breads and pastas) and beans. Do not be afraid to eat bread! Research demonstrates very clearly that whole grains are beneficial for weight loss and the prevention of type II diabetes, colon cancer and constipation.

5. Go for green! Instead of your morning coffee, opt for some green tea. Green tea has many health benefits, from helping to fight diseases such as cancer and heart disease, to aiding in weight loss. Studies show that catechins, the antioxidants in green tea, help increase fat burning. Research also shows that green tea may lower blood sugars by inhibiting enzymes that allow the absorption of starches, and it may reduce the absorption of fat from the intestine. Typical dosage is three or four cups per day or a 300 to 400 mg capsule of green tea extract daily.

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Queen’s Park foot dragging on important CODE OF CONDUCT review

Queen’s Park is foot dragging on a very important law code, especially important for Pickering as the City grapples with a controversial councillor. The provincial government has been asked to amend The Code of Conduct to include a removal of councillor clause based on violations of the Code of Conduct as set by the province.

The City of Pickering council has members who feel Councillor Robinson has been detrimental to the work of the municipal council. More energy, time and money has been devoted to dealing with Robinson than the Councillors feel is justifiably warranted. More serious is their claim that Robinson is a supportive of racist and hate issues and want her removed from Council.

Editorially speaking, the Council may be correct in that Robinson has taken positions that may seem to be hate and racist in slant. Her justification when criticized and attempts are made to silence her is that she has the right to free speech. True, but free speech has limits and reasonable limitations. One cannot yell “Fire!” in a crowd without proper reason. One cannot segregate or isolate LGBTQ positions at the expense of the general population. Promotion of individual causes cannot be to the detriment of the great society.

Queen’s Park should move on this review so that the arbiter of the Code of Conduct can examine and review Robinson’s actions as a city councillor.

HEALTH: Ever feel sleepy after a meal? Want to take a nap after eating?

This sleepyness after a meal is called POSTPRANDIAL SOMNOLENCE and is normal. I have excerpted the crucial parts of a health article about the issue.

What Is Postprandial Somnolence?

Postprandial somnolence is a scientific term used to describe feelings of sleepiness that occur after eating a meal. This phenomenon is especially common in the early afternoon, during what is known as the “post-lunch dip.”  Studies have revealed a number of biological processes that contribute to drowsiness following a meal, including:

  • Circadian rhythms: Circadian rhythms are natural fluctuations in body temperature, hormones, metabolism, and other physiological processes that operate according to a 24-hour clock. The circadian signals that promote wakefulness tend to decrease in the early afternoon, which can lead to sleepiness following lunch.
  • Sleep drive: The longer you’ve been awake, the more your desire to sleep—known as the sleep drive—grows. Thus, you’re more likely to feel drowsy following an afternoon or evening meal than after breakfast.
  • Reduced brain activity: Brain activity and cognitive function appears to slow following a meal, which may contribute to sleepiness.
  • Hormonal changes: Eating promotes a drop in hormones that maintain alertness and a rise in hormones that promote sleepiness, including melatonin and serotonin.
  • Cytokines: Cytokines are proteins that play an important role in the body’s immune and inflammatory responses—and they have also been linked to feelings of fatigue when the level fluctuates. The concentration of certain cytokines in your body rises after you eat, especially if you’ve consumed a high-calorie meal.

Scientists theorize that postprandial somnolence may serve several possible functions, including allowing the body to dedicate resources to digestion and helping conserve energy.

How to Stop Feeling Tired After Eating

While you may not be able to completely eliminate post-meal drowsiness, there are several steps you can take to limit your chances of feeling tired after you eat.

  • Make sleep a priority: Post-meal drowsiness can be significantly worse if you don’t get enough high-quality sleep, so it’s important to adopt healthy sleep hygiene practices.
  • Adopt a plant-based diet: Research indicates that nutritious diets rich in vegetables, fruits, and nuts and low in saturated fats, processed foods, and desserts are associated with reduced levels of daytime sleepiness.
  • Pay attention to meal size: A “lighter” meal with fewer calories will likely lead to less sleepiness than a “heavy” or high-calorie meal. In short: avoid overeating.
  • Use light to your advantage: Light serves as an important circadian cue, so taking a walk in the sunshine or spending half an hour in front of a light box may help you reduce or avoid post-meal fatigue.
  • Get some exercise: If your schedule allows, engage in moderate-intensity exercise, like speed walking or taking a bike ride, before post-meal tiredness sets in. This may help increase energy and stave off fatigue.
  • Stay hydrated: Getting plenty of water throughout the day may improve alertness and keep sleepiness at bay.
  • Drink a cup of coffee or tea: If you want to avoid sleepiness following lunch, consider sipping a caffeinated beverage. That said, to prevent nighttime sleep disturbances, make sure to avoid caffeine for at least eight hours before bedtime.

Hello  dairy products,

I loved your grec-greek yogurt in their little plastic jars….but that is the problem I want to comment about. In the past, this product came in glass jars and was recyclable. Now, you are using plastic, which is not as easily recyclable as glass or, in some locations, not recyclable.

I understand profit margins are as thin as onion skin for producers such as you. Still, in this day and age, and given the obvious horrendous changes in our weather because of global warming, it would be gratifying to see your company reconsider the types of containers it uses. I am sure your clients would be willing to pay a few cents more for a product where the producer demonstrates responsibility and concern about the environment.

Your product outstanding; your packaging, not so much.

Thank you.

They responded:

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. We truly appreciate your support for our grec-greek yogurt and understand your concerns about our packaging.

Our decision to switch to 100% recyclable PET plastic containers was driven by our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint. These containers are much lighter, which helps lower greenhouse gas emissions during transportation. Additionally, we can now produce these containers in Canada, reducing the need for overseas shipping due to the lack of local glass suppliers.

PET #1 plastic is accepted at all Canadian recycling facilities and consumes significantly less energy than glass during both production and recycling processes. We hope you find that this packaging still offers a superior experience while being a more ecological choice compared to other plastics, such as PS#6, which is rarely recycled.

We value your feedback and will continue to explore ways to improve our environmental impact. Thank you for your continued support and for sharing your thoughts with others.

USA – DNC: KAMALA HARRIS is addressing the DNC tonight…worth watching

What an incredible choice!

On one hand, a success attorney general, the first Black American woman to hold office of Vice President, Senator, wife, mother, daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother who were civil rights supporters/protestors.

This candidate has paid her dues but many Americans are quasi-rednecks if not outright ones, misogynists, sexists and racists. Are these voters likely to give a Harris candidate even the briefest of cursory consideration? Tough call and likely a razor-edge call at that but which side of the razor?

The polls have him almost neck and neck with Harris in the polls: 47% vs. 45% (Aug. 22)

So this reperbate/miscreant has almost 50% of the potential voters in support.

Is the world crazy? Are many Americans nuts?

CANADA: Strike! Strike! Who’s next…you fill in the group

CP Rail. CN Rail. Air Canada. You fill in the placard. Who’s next?

They all have as much right to strike as any other group of workers. In many cases, the strikers have legitimate reasons for striking: safety issues, job security, rest periods then there’s wages.

Often the strikers are on strike for wage increases. They complain that they need more money to cover the high prices in the marketplace. A vicious circle is launched.

The strikers get increases in wages if the strike is successful. The struck company, needing to compensate for the increased expenditures, raises prices. The strikers are back in the position of needing increased salaries to deal with the increase in prices.

General population be damned. You may run out of water in a week or two because the chlorine needed for water purification is shipped by rail. You may not get your morning paper because the paper for the newspaper was transported by rail. Your mechanic can’t fix your brakes because the brake pads are normally transported by rail.

No problem. We’ve transport trucks. These kings of the road find themselves to be the only transportation game in town. Price increase! We pay again, and so do the strikers.

And just when you thought these two, CN and CP will do their strike dance and we’re out of the woods with just a few scrapes of price increases. LOL, fat chance….look who’s next!

NEWS: Pusateri’s high end grocery retailer bankruptcy?

Now here’s a story for which most of us have no sympathy, unless you’re part of their family.

“Pusateri’s Fine Foods fallout: grocer owes creditors $37 million”…oh be still my achin’ heart.

For many years, Pusateri’s has been selling groceries at exorbitant prices. Stratospherically higher than any Loblaw’s or Metro. The Avenue Road store was so “Fine Food” they had valet service for a time. Imagine, drive up and a valet chauffeurs your mechanical steed into a parking spot for you. Don’t know if one paid extra for the service as I never drove my vehicle to their parking lot. My car would have been rejected as too plebian. I wanted to say, ‘pedestrian’ but that didn’t make sense or should I say cents. The Pusateris product pricing reflected the deep pockets of its shoppers who expected valet service. A perfect example of conspicuous consumption, “I shopped at Pusateri’s.”… la dee dah!

Well, finally the consumers had the light bulb light up. The prices were seen as gouging, exorbitant and unjustifiable. Sales dropped….and dropped and dropped some more, until the inevitable finally happened. Consumers recognized they more than their cars were being taken for a ride. Pusateris was gouging them. Can’t blame Pusateri’s though…if some sucker is willing to pay it, gouge them. And Pusateri’s did so, for years and years. The consumers finally saw the light and made a decision…no more shopping at Pusateri’s. Pusateri’s is closing its doors, one store at a time.

Before you lament the family with tears of pity consider this. Their Yorkville store owes $8 million, while overall their stores owe creditors $37 million. The stores were selling products which were not pad for yet. A great game if you can play it and Pusateri’s played it with gusto.  Today, family members, and we use the label ‘family’ with caution, are crying in their Moët & Chandon Dom Pérignon in Barbados or Curacao. For years, their stores raked in the dough, prices loftier than the highest cloud. Ring, ring, the tills chimed as the cash flowed in. The gullible conspicuous spenders bought and bought with pride that “they shopped at Pusateri’s.”

Those shoppers lost a bit but once they came to their senses, the ride was terminated. Some one was still left holding the bag, the purveyors….on the hook for millions. These people must be dumber than doorknobs. It shouldn’t take a diploma in rocket science to recognize a dead beat client. Reaching $37 million dollars before it dawned on them that they weren’t having their bills paid, the rockets flamed out, the creditors saw the light. Good luck with claims litigation.

Pusateri’s … crack open another bottle of champagne. Ya beat ’em all.

Mastering the BARKSIDE (DOCX)

“Mastering the Barkside”

My goal tonight is to help you understand why dogs react – what’s going on inside their brains – and what’s going to surprise you is that it’s not that different from humans.

Reality check: It’s a dog, not a robot!
The first thing we need to do is give ourselves a reality check. We are so used to everything being instant. Not sure what something is – Google it. Not sure how to do something – YouTube it. Hey Siri – directions to the nearest Starbucks. Hey Alexa – play some music. Hey Rover – come – and Rover doesn’t come. Why not? Rover must be broken – the links not working. No, Rover is a dog, it’s not pre-programed and just like humans, doesn’t always do as it’s told.

Dogs learn slowly
We often get emails from clients “My puppy is 12 weeks old and still peeing on the floor.” A 12-week-old puppy is equivalent to a 10-month-old child. Is a 10-month child toilet trained? If you’ve had a child, do you remember how long it took to potty train your child? It takes a good 2 – 3 months for them to not have any accidents. Just like children, puppies have no control over their bladders at that age. Just like children, when they suddenly realize they have to go, they have to go right then and there.

Getting your attention
Nipping or biting is another thing people email us about. At 3 months, your puppy is teething and will be for the next 2 -3 months. This is extremely painful for them. Again, if you’ve raised children, you know how painful teething is for babies. Babies usually get 1 or 2 teeth at a time. Puppies can end up with 3 or 4 coming in at a time. Here’s the other thing, puppies can’t use their paws like hands. Sometimes, they grab at us to get our attention, just like a child pulling on your clothes. Try this… put your hands behind your back. Now, how do you get your friend’s attention? You use your mouth – either by speaking/barking or by butting your head against them or grabbing their clothes with your mouth.

Mature quickly; ‘terrible teens’
Now, here’s the thing with dogs: they mature a lot quicker than humans. At 5 – 6 months, your puppy is now becoming an adolescent. No one ever talks about the teenage phase in dogs because if they did, a lot of people wouldn’t get a dog. It’s worse than the puppy stage. They become just like human teenagers. They stop listening to you. They become more independent and don’t do what you ask or take off and ignore you when you call them. They often don’t respond to their name. They are more interested in exploring the environment than you. Just like humans, this is when behavioural issues often develop.

History of dog training
Like everything else, training has evolved, and it continues to evolve. Much research and study have been done into the dog’s brain and neuroscience over the past few years. There’s a great documentary on Netflix right now called “Inside the Mind of a Dog”. Watch it! It’s excellent and talks about what they now understand, which is very different from what was originally thought.

Aversive training (corporal punishment)
Let me take you through the history of dog training. During the 2 world wars, corporal punishment was how they trained military dogs. This way of training continued after the war. This is what is referred to as aversive methods. It uses positive punishment. Now I don’t know about you, but that’s an oxymoron in my view. There is nothing positive about punishment. It means doing or using something unpleasant on your dog to change their behaviour. This includes things such as scolding your pup after they have an accident during potty training, pushing on your dog’s behind to make them sit, using a shock collar to stop barking or using a prong collar or choke chain to stop pulling on the leash. A dog is supposed to be our best friend. Would you subject your best friend to those things?

Positive Reward Training
In 1947, a more respectful way of training was developed, but it didn’t catch on in North America until the 80’s. Karen Pryor and Dr. Ian Dunbar spearheaded the movement to train our dogs in a more kind and non-aversive way. This method is called Positive Reward Based Training and is also known as clicker training. It involves being positive at all times, luring your dog to help them understand the word and what it means, marking it with a Yes or a Click and following through with a piece of food. The food is their paycheque. We recommend using your dog’s kibble for training because they have to eat. You only need the good stuff or treats when there are lots of distractions, such as squirrels. Eventually, you start to wean them off the rewards once they fully understand the word and can do it anywhere, anytime.

Vocabulary limits and comprehension
By the way, your dog only has the capacity to learn approximately 160 words. We use around 2000 words because we speak in sentences. Dogs don’t understand sentences. They also don’t generalize well. If you teach them the word sit only in the kitchen and then one day you ask them to sit in the living room, they often don’t understand that it means the same thing that it did in the kitchen. You have to practice the word everywhere. They also need to hear the word about 2000 times before they are consistently doing the action. They also don’t understand when a word has more than one meaning. For instance, you teach your dog the word Down, meaning to lie down. Your dog is lying on the couch, and you tell it to get down, but it just looks at you confused. Your dog is down on the couch. They have no idea what you’re asking. They also get confused when we use more than one word for the same action. For instance, you teach the word Sit. One day, you tell them to Sit Down. That doesn’t sound like sit, and it’s 2 words, so which do you want? One last thing on this. Your dog will learn certain words way faster than others. They’ll learn the words Treat, Cookie, and Dinner and walk very quickly. That’s because those words are important to them. Words like sit and down aren’t important to them; that’s why we use food to reward them when they do the action.

Balanced Training
Then there’s another type of training called Balanced training. This involves the use of both positive reward-based techniques and, when needed, punishment. They start out using a kind and respectful method and then switch to fear if the dog doesn’t comply. Imagine if someone did that to you. This creates a confused and distrusting dog.

At Who’s Walking Who, we use Positive Reward-based training and have been for over 20 years. We also used Games Based Concept Training. PRBT is perfect for teaching your dog words such as sit, down, come, stay, leave it, etc. But it doesn’t work for behaviours such as not chasing things, barking at stuff, getting over-exited, etc.

Games-Based Concept Training
Changing behaviours involves changing the neuropathways in their brains. In other words, changing how they think they should react. You can’t tell them how to do that. This is where Games Based Concept Training works and is seen as the next revolution in dog training. It originated in Europe about 15 years ago and started gaining popularity in North America a few years ago. Susan Garrett is a big advocate of Games Based Concept Training. Concept Training works on 16 different behaviours and includes impulse control, disengagement, bringing excitement or fear levels down, confidence, flexibility and a lot more.

How a dog’s brain works
Before I get into how and why this works, let me explain how the dog’s brain works.

A dog’s brain is just like ours in that it’s made up of building blocks. The building blocks represent skills or a lack of skills. So, maybe your dog has good impulse control, or maybe they don’t, maybe they’re good at disengaging from squirrels, maybe not, maybe they walk past dogs no problem, maybe they don’t. You get the idea.

Dog judgement and reaction to it
A dog will see or hear something and decide if it’s important. Dogs hear four times better than us. If it isn’t important, they’ll ignore it. If it is, they’ll decide if it is good or bad. You may have a different opinion on that. Your dog may see a squirrel and go Yahoo! Whereas you’re going Oh No! If it’s good, it probably involves them being really excited, having no impulse control, and not being able to disengage. If they decide it’s bad, they may react in fear because they lack confidence, they may also have difficulty disengaging, or re-engaging with you. Whether it’s good or bad, reactions can be similar.

Experience leads to emotional response
Here’s the thing: dogs live for the experience. But we love experiences too. How many here love watching sports or going to sports games? Do you sit there and smile or cheer the team on? Perhaps you like camping, hiking, going to the movies or live theatre, travelling, or even reading a good book. We love experiences, too; we just react differently. Suppose you won the lottery. I’m sure you wouldn’t look at your ticket and go – oh look, I just won 6 million dollars. Isn’t that nice? I guess I better leave for work. You’d be jumping up and down, possibly screaming, and possibly telling your boss what they can do with your job.

Ageing limit of dogs equals 2 to 3-year-old child
Now, let’s think about a 2 – 3-year-old child. Let’s say you tell them you’re taking them to Disney World or somewhere exciting. How would they react? They’d probably jump up and down, maybe scream with glee, or act silly. What would happen if they were scared by something, maybe a loud noise or a bad dream? They might scream, run & hide, or jump into bed with you. What about when they get frustrated? Stomp their feet, yell, throw a temper tantrum. Do they have a behavioural problem? Of course not. They simply haven’t learned to behave appropriately. Here’s the thing. Your dog, when it reaches adulthood, will only have the brain maturity of a 2 – 3-year-old child. That’s as good as it gets. So, it’s no wonder they react the way they do.

“Stress Bucket” and overflow
Here’s the other thing that happens. Dogs have a bucket. We have one, too. It’s called a stress bucket. They may have a very large bucket or a very small bucket, and it’s not related to the size of your dog. The size of the bucket represents how much stuff they can handle before their bucket overflows. There are days when my bucket overflows. That’s when I go “I’m done. I can’t handle anymore.” How many times have you got to that stage? It’s not usually one thing that puts dogs over their threshold. It’s an accumulation of things.

Hole in the bucket
Every bucket has an imaginary hole. It can be large or small and has nothing to do with the size of the bucket. The hole is where stress leaves the bucket and allows your dog to calm down. New research has discovered that 70% of dogs have some form of anxiety.

‘Bucket flow:’ flowing in and draining out
What may surprise you is what can fill their bucket. Anything positive or negative can fill the bucket. Spending time in the backyard and checking out what’s happening, people coming to your door, people passing by the window, going on walks, picking up the leash, you go out, predictors of when things should happen – and then they don’t, routines, mealtime, car rides, frustration, groomers and vets, noisy children at home, multi-dog household, medical conditions, itchy skin. The unfortunate part is that when your dog’s bucket overflows, it can take 72 hours for some dog’s buckets to empty.

Rescue dogs
Let’s talk about rescues. Many rescues, depending on their situation, develop PTSDPost Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it’s very similar to human PTSD. They can also be very pessimistic and see the world as a scary place. Here’s the thing about rescues… the shelter or rescue organization often doesn’t know the true history of the dog. Even if you adopt a local dog from Ontario, this dog has no idea what’s happening. It may have been with a loving family who, for whatever reason, had to give it up. It’s been in a cage for X amount of time, and the owners haven’t come to get it. Instead, strangers come to see it and walk away. Then, someone actually takes it home. It doesn’t automatically think, oh, this is my new home. It’s confusing and, for many, frightening. Imagine if someone took you when you were a child, out of your home, locked you away somewhere, and then someone else came to take you to live with them. How would you feel? A dog that has been abused will be even more untrusting and scared.

Rescues from foreign countries
How about rescues from other countries? We see many from Mexico and Texas. The ones from Mexico are usually found on the streets. So how did they get there? Were they born on the street? Did they live with a family and were discarded or got lost? Here is what these dogs go through… they get picked up and put in a shelter. Sometimes, they’ll get fostered out, and sometimes not. Next, they travel from Mexico to Canada on a kind of relay where one volunteer will take them so far and then someone else takes over. It often takes 3 or 4 different vehicles and transportation types, cars, planes, boats and trains, to get to Canada and are delivered to the foster. They stay in foster until they are adopted. They are now in a place where the sights, sounds, smells and language are completely different from where they came from. It’s no wonder they develop PTSD.

Please understand that I’m not against adopting. In fact, I’m all for it. We usually have 3 Goldens at a time – 2 from a breeder which are trained for demo work in classes and one that is a rescue from Golden Rescue. Our newest rescue, who we’ve had almost a year, and we got her at 7, came from a very bad situation. She was used as a breeding bitch for her entire life and kept in a small cage where she also did her business. She came with PTSD. It took us four months to toilet-train her. Words like sit or down were not going to help her. What I needed to help her with was building her confidence and security and becoming more optimistic.

Training is continual and consistent
The message I want to get across is that there are no quick fixes when it comes to dog training. People often come to puppy class, and then we don’t see them again until after the behavioural issues develop. This could have been prevented if they had continued with training. You don’t send a child off to kindergarten and then expect them to be able to enter the workforce.

Many people don’t bring their dog to training until they’re an adolescent when unwanted behaviours have already developed. It will now take longer to change those behaviours because their dog has had lots of time to practice them.

You need to have a lot of patience when training. Think about anything you have learned to do. Sports is a great example. Athletes train constantly. You don’t read a driving manual and then get behind the wheel of a car and drive off. Everything we do well takes practice. Why would we expect our dogs to learn faster than humans? They are dogs with the brain capacity and maturity of a 2 – 3-year-old child. We also tend to set our expectations of our dogs too high. Don’t expect your dog to be perfect. I’m not perfect, and I’m sure you’re not either, so don’t expect your dog to be.

What BARKING means
Barking is another thing most people misunderstand. When they bark, we often tell them to be quiet. But we bark all the time. It’s called speaking, and sometimes we speak loudly. Dogs don’t speak in words like we do. When they bark, they are trying to communicate. They might be telling another dog to stay away, they might be alerting you to something they heard, they might be trying to get your attention because they want something. I remember when I was very young, my grandmother used to say, “Children should be seen and not heard.” We do the same thing to our dogs. Dogs are constantly trying to communicate with us. We need to try to understand them.

Support your dog
You also need to have your dog’s back! I spoke with a client a couple of weeks ago. She told me her dog was good with medium & large dogs but didn’t like it when pups or small dogs jumped in her face, and she wanted to stop her dog’s behaviour. The problem is not with her dog. It’s with the pups and small dogs. I told her it was absolutely okay for her dog not to like other dogs jumping in her face. That’s rude. Most pups don’t know any better, and most small breeds never learn that it’s rude. How would you like it if someone or a child came right up to your face? Instead, let her dog know she’s got her back and either get her out of that situation or ask the other people not to allow their dog to approach.

Dogs don’t love everything
Here’s another misconception… Many people think their dog should be friendly and like all dogs. Why? Do you like everyone you meet? Do you go up to and greet everyone you see? I know I don’t, and there are people I purposely avoid. Why do we expect our dogs to be fine with every dog they see? That’s unrealistic.

Dogs remember fearful situations
We often have students in class with a dog that has been attacked by another dog and now their dog is reactive to all dogs. They want their dog to stop reacting. Put yourself in their paws. You get attacked by someone while on a walk or anywhere. How are you going to feel after that? You might not want to leave the house, or you might be afraid of everyone you see. You are going to be on guard for probably years and might need counselling. Why would we think our dog would be okay after being attacked?

Leash wear
We also expect our dogs to be okay with wearing a leash. Why? They are not born wearing a leash. They probably didn’t wear one until you came and got them. Now, they need to wear a leash so we can keep them safe on walks. But how would you feel if someone put a leash on you? You’d try to get away.

“Heel” walking isn’t natural
Another thing about leashes and walking next to you. Dogs see the world through their nose, not their eyes. Their nose is 10,000 times more powerful than ours. But they only see in yellow, blue and greyish brown. So yes, they need to sniff. Have you ever watched a group of dogs off leash? Here’s what happens – they come together and sniff stuff, then they might play or go off on their own way. They might come together again, and then go off. You won’t see 2 dogs walking shoulder to shoulder off leash strolling along having a conversation. Hey Rover, what’d you have for breakfast today? That’s not natural for them. That’s what humans do.

Genetics determine behaviour patterns
The other thing is that genetics play a big role in how your dog acts. Up until the 1800s, almost all dogs were bred to do specific jobs. We get all sorts of inquiries for help on this one. Someone with a Husky complains that their Husky pulls them. Of course, they do; they were bred to pull sleds. People complain that their Border Collie or Aussie wants to organize them. Yes, they were bred to herd sheep. Then there are those with Terrier breeds that complain that they constantly chase small animals. Yes, they were bred to chase and go down holes to kill rodents. Then there’s the Retriever that constantly brings everything to their owner. That’s why they’re called Retrievers – they retrieve.

Behaviour changes take time
The other thing you need to understand is that it takes time to change behaviours. Think about a time when you’ve had to change your own behaviour. Maybe you decided to lose weight, or needed to cut out sugar, or had to cut back on drinking, stop smoking, discovered you had gluten intolerance and had to cut out gluten, had to change the way you did anything you’ve been doing for a long time. How hard was that? How many times did you fall back into your old behaviour? For our dogs, it’s even harder. We can talk ourselves into changing, but our dogs can’t. And the longer your dog has practiced their behaviour, the longer it will take to change it.

Understanding dog behaviour
You need to understand your dog and why they do what they do. People often want to treat the symptom without knowing the cause. For example, my dog pulls on leash. I want him to stop. Okay, but why does he pull on leash? Well, it’s because he wants to chase the squirrel. No, that’s the trigger, not the cause. Is it because he lacks engagement with you, does he not see value in being in proximity to you, does he have trouble disengaging from the environment, does he lack calmness, or have trouble bringing his excitement or fear-level down, does he lack confidence, does he lack flexibility in order to change the way he behaves?

Concept Games-Based Training
So, here’s how Concept Games-based training works. It works on Training for the Situation. Not Training in the Situation. If you try to train when your dog is in a high state of arousal – barking, lunging, jumping, fear state, frustration, etc. – they can’t hear us. They can’t process what we’re saying. We are nothing more than white noise. Concept training trains for the situation. Instead, you practice the exercises in every different room in your house, including bathrooms and closets, if big enough, your backyard, front yard and on walks where there are no distractions. After practicing 1 or 2 weeks in all those places, you’ll discover that if the reaction to something happens on walks, like chasing a squirrel or barking at another dog, it will lesson and eventually disappear. Also, they may not do it one day and then the next day they do. It’s not consistent at first, but it will become that way if you continue to practice the exercises. Once the behaviour has changed, you can lessen the frequency of the exercises and eventually stop. If your dog slips back into old habits, start doing the exercises again, and you’ll find that the behaviour will change more quickly. Remember how many times you slipped back when changing a habit or behaviour. This happens to our dogs as well.

Practice duration
You only practice the exercises for 2 – 3 minutes. You always want your dog to be eager to play again. Use their kibble when working in the house. You may need higher value outside. Simply take some of their daily food allowance and use it for training. If you use raw feed like I do, use freeze-dried or dehydrated food or fresh veggies if your dog likes them. My dogs love carrots. By the way, what you consider to be high value may not be high value to your dog. One of our trainer’s dogs will do anything for cucumber.

Concept training works on these situations

  • Arousal Up
  • Arousal Down
  • Calmness
  • Confidence
  • Disengagement
  • Engagement
  • Flexibility
  • Focus
  • Grit
  • Independence
  • Novelty
  • Optimism
  • Proximity
  • Self-Control
  • Thinking in Arousal
  • Toleration of Frustration.

There are over 300 exercises. Each exercise works on 3 – 7 concepts. I’m going to show you 5 of the exercises we teach in class. If your dog is not food-motivated, use a toy. There are also different levels to most of the exercises. These are all level 1.

Paint The Town

  1. Have 5 pieces of food in each hand. Present one hand to your dog and lure them over to the other side of your body, then give them a piece of food.
  2. Next, present your other hand and lure them to the other side of your body and give them a piece of food.
  3. Keep alternating back and forth. It’s important to keep the treat on their nose. Don’t hold your hand far away. This is all about following your hands and good things happen.

This exercise works on focus, proximity, engagement, optimism and helps with focusing on you and not the environment, walking on leash and recall.

Proximity Zone

  1. Start this game by dropping pieces of food on the ground close to you.
  2. Gradually add a little movement and drop so that your dog learns to remain close to you to get the food.
  3. For dogs that continually have their nose to the ground such as hounds, you can feed to the mouth instead. But only feed when your dog is next to you. Don’t lure them with the food to come to you.

This exercise works on proximity, focus, & engagement and helps with building value for hanging out with you, walking on leash, and recall.

Orientation Game

  1. Start this game by tossing a piece of food a little way away from you. Tell them to get it and allow them to eat the food.
  2. When they turn towards you – mark that moment with a Yes or Nice and toss another piece of food away from you.
  3. Repeat a few times continuing to mark that choice and to Orient back towards you each time.
  4. Start tossing the food further away from you and in different directions.

This exercise works on disengagement, focus and proximity and helps with recall, walking on leash, and listening to you.

DMT Distract, Mark, Treat

  1. In the case of DMT we would always look to use a calmly conditioned marker such as a calm drawn outniiiiiceeee” or “gooooooood” rather than a more exciting “yes”.
  2. With your dog in front of you (on or off lead) say your calm marker word e.g. ‘Niiiice’… then feed your dog.
  3. Repeat step a few times making sure there’s a short moment of time between “NIIICE” and the delivery of the food.
  4. The goal here is to pair a calm word with the idea that there’s nothing to worry about.
  5. Next, add a simple distraction such as a blowing leaf, someone walking past, looking at a garbage/recycling bin, something that moves or anything else.
  6. When the dog looks at the distraction, say your marker word (nice or goods) as they look towards you feed away from the distraction.

This exercise works on disengagement, engagement, flexibility and helps with learning to ignore distractions both inside and outside the home.

“Caged Food”

Your dog can be in any position of their choice.

  1. Put some food on their boundary and cover it with your hand.
  2. If your dog interacts with your hand, do and say nothing. Keep your hand in place. Wait until they stop interacting with your hand, and then reward them with a piece of food by removing the hand covering the food.
  3. As they get good at this, you can start to uncover the food, but be ready to cover it if they go for it.

This exercise works on impulse control, thinking when excitedoptimismcalmnessand disengagement and helps with recallchasingsaying hello to everyone and ignoring distractions in the environment.

ABOUT MY WEBSITE: A personal message about my website, Doc Szpinner

is a website I created many years ago.

I am Richard Szpin, a retired educator and a dedicated community activist.

My website differs from other Internet sites significantly:

  • there is no selling unless you call trying to influence people’s thinking selling;
  • it is ongoing and updated with current pieces of news frequently;
  • it is much more than just a ONE-PAGE FRONT PIECE website;
  • it has layers, sections, categories where information is posted and gets updated as often as practical;
  • the information posted is always based on research, inquiry and probing;
  • editorials and point-counterpoint are subjective posts, either mine or based on what people have written me (published with their permission)
  • my site expenses are underwritten by me. The only financial support I receive comes from donations made by site visitors and newsletter readers;
  • I am retired. My publications are my hobby, my passion and my interest…that I have site visitors and newsletter readers is very gratifying and make this all feel worthwhile.

NEWS: When any news is censored, we all lose

Recently, the ONTARIO CLEAN AIR ALLIANCE emailed us with the claim that a local news outlet had censored their submission and rejected it from publicatin.

It seems that the OCAA submitted an ad to the KING WEEKLY SENTINEL newspaper but the newspaper chose to reject it from publication.

The Ontario Clean Air Alliance claims the ad was rejected as censorship.

The King Weekly Sentinel disclaims that the rejection was censorship. They explain they received a number of calls from citizens who stated there were errors in what was being published [Curious: how did these people know there were errors in the story before it was published?]

____________________

From what we have found, this ad never saw the light of day. So how people found errors in it is incomprehensible.

As importantly, the KWS seems to not have bothered to reach out to the OCAA to explain the reasons for the ad rejection. They likely have many ad submissions and have a policy not to bother digging into each one. It’s free country and they have the right to choose what they want to print or not print. This is not censorship, rather it is practicality. There is only so much space in any newspaper.

__________________

What is important about this story is that we must be alert and watchful about news today. News information is easily posted to the Internet and irresponsible reporting can be done too easily. This is not to imply the KWS was irresponsible. Likely, it was simply being practical about what it could publish. However, the censorship claims made by the OCAA might be a leap to erroneous conclusions.

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: The mania of the Councillor Lisa Robinson chaos just won’t end

The inanity revolving around Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson never stops. Worse, the councillor never stops dreaming up new was to stoke the fires that she has sparked.

Lisa Robinson, elected Councillor of Pickering, just doesn’t know when to quit. Or she just doesn’t want to quit. If dozens and dozens of people, sane, rational thinking people, call you misguide or worse, maybe you should re-examine what you stand for and what you say. Not Robinson.

When facing criticism or opposition that become increasingly loud and vociferous, Robinson’s response is an ‘Chef Emeril Lagasse.’ She kicks it up a notch! Adds more spice! Sprinkles in some cayenne and corruption spices.

The chaos sparked by the Robinson conflagration has oozed out of Pickering into the rest of Canada where Pickering has become the comedy act of City councils. She may be aiming for the ‘crown of con and caricature, replacing the king of con, Donald T****. When others go low, Robinson goes lower. When others debase her remarks, she declares the umpire corrupt. When others label her remarks as misconceptions and mistakes, she challenges that she is being mislabeled by misogynists and sexist. When her kettle of chaos cools to a simmer, she dials the heat up by going on air with an arrogant hot head of spunk and junk.

Even worse, the woman won’t light her pedal on the metal. Now she’s taking her road show to the nation’s capital to see how it runs there.

Read the Durham news -> GLENN HENDRY

It sounds agreeable to say, ‘let’s not give her any more air!’ but she’s like T****, where too much of the population has swallowed his salacious statements as believable. The gullible live in Canada too and Robinso has a significant number of nincompoops who think that if she utters an iota of validity, all of what says must be valid and acceptable.

There’s just no accounting for the ignorance of the mob or what absurdity it will accept.

And the story’s not over yet. Queen’s Park is reviewing the possibility of Code of Conduct changes to Ontario’s Municipal Act:

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Israel – Hamas cease fire, is there any chance whatsoever?

An Israeli/Hamas ceasefire: an indescribably difficult situation or call with little likelihood of a ceasefire. Peace will come with the total obliteration of one of the combatants.

If you are Hamas
Your goal is to annihilate the Israelis. Hence, there can be no end to the hostilities until the goal has been achieved. The goal supersedes everything else: the lives of Palestinians, the lives of Israelis, collateral damage, the razing of all of Gaza, and the annihilation of all residents of Gaza. All of these are secondary to the ultimate goal, obliteration of Israel. Therefore, Hamas cannot agree to a ceasefire if they are faithful to their raison d’etres. No compromise, no negotiation, no yielding. Israel must be annihilated.

If you are an Israeli
You have been attacked; your citizens kidnapped and taken hostage. Your goal is retaliation and a “defensive offensive.” Attack Hamas leaders and totally remove them at whatever cost; keep attacking them or where they might hide until they return the hostages or are wiped out. There is nothing to negotiate, compromise or settle. Hostages or annihilation. Jews have survived other attacks, and will survive this one.

Everyone else
Everyone believes and accepts ‘just’ wars based on retaliation after an attack. Hamas attacked first. Israel is completely justified in attacking the areas where Hamas resides. However, the goal of total obliteration of Hamas may not be realistic or achievable as long as one tunnel can be retained. Israel cannot believe it can wipe away the earth on which Gaza sits. Hence, Hamas will be relentless in its survival. Israel will have to completely raze Gaza, totally, completely. And even that may not guarantee the annihilation of Hamas. Therefore, what goal can they have? None is practical or achievable. Israel will have to accept Hamas as it is, as total obliteration of Hamas is impossible.

The solution
There is no solution if the combatants will not budge an iota from their fundamental reason for being. Until both are willing to budge, the poor people of Gaza are doomed, the collateral damage of this conflict, the fight between a rock and a hard place with neither willing to yield an inch, a speck. This conflict is a tragedy that confirms the obstinacy and recalcitrance of humanity.

Here’s what I sent these officials…

“Hello elected official,

‘Boy pleads guilty to Toronto’s youngest-ever murder, committed at age 12‘ is the recent headline from the Star.” Can you believe it! It’s incredible that a youngster of 12 would resort to such extreme violence. Some things have to change.

As I repeatedly plead, we need positive and constructive programs that are followed up for results. We need to tackle the issues behind such violence. I have repeatedly pleaded for publicly promoted programs and endeavours to reduce the kinds of stimulation and publication of HATE incidents. We need something constructive that everyone sees, promoting GOOD, constructive action and reaction when in stressful situations.

What are you promoting or doing to help bring about the change we need in our society today?”

PICKERING: AMICA PICKERING hosts an awesome Caribbean festivity

[player id=’66596′]

Amica Pickering hosts celebratory events for its residents and invited guests. Recently they held a Caribbean celebration, a smashing success.

More than 300 people, residents, family and friends, and invited guests attended the wonderful celebration. Many people even dressed up in their Caribbean best as they nibbled on Jamaican goodies and calypsoed to live Caribbean melodies played by two talented and spirited musicians. The melodies plonked out rhythmically from the steel drum percussionist while his partner plucked the guitar singing the songs of the Caribbean south. Bob Marley would have been proud.

Amica Pickering regularly hosts such events, but this one was one of the most enjoyable. The residents lined up along the dance floor. There were so many who attended that the dining room doors had to be opened so the overflow had places to sit and enjoy the music and the dancing. And dancing there was, costumed staff and residents wearing their own colourful costumes, all joined in swaying and rocking and bopping to the calypso melodies.

The nibbles were great, the drinks delicious and the music, spirited, lively and engaging. It was a real party that the residents and attendees really enjoyed. Amica Pickering did a marvellous job with this party.

NEWS: MPOX – A new virus hits the Congo; where next ?

MPOX – The new COVID

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global health emergency again because a new strain of the virus is spreading rapidly in parts of Africa, particularly in Congo. This new strain is spreading through close contact, including sexual contact and among children in displacement camps. While mpox is usually mild, it can be deadly, especially for children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. The WHO is calling for more resources and tools to help stop the spread of mpox in Africa.

Important points:

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global health emergency for the second time in two years.
  • This declaration comes after a surge in cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which has experienced its worst outbreak ever, with over 27,000 cases and 1,100 deaths since January 2023.
  • A new, rapidly spreading strain of mpox has emerged in DRC, raising concerns as it spreads beyond the country to Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and Kenya.
  • The emergency declaration aims to raise international awareness and secure funding to combat the outbreak, particularly in DRC, where access to vaccines and medical tools has been limited.
  • While mpox is a serious health issue, it does not spread through the air like COVID-19.
  • The current challenge is to ensure that existing tools to prevent and treat mpox reach those most in need, especially in DRC and neighboring countries.

HEALTH: Improve your BALANCE; with 4 very easy follow-up exercises

IMPROVING BALANCE
Pensioner Fitness Improving Balance
Ian McClymont

What is Balance?
Balance is a use-it-or-lose-it function. It is the ability to maintain the body’s center of mass over its base of support. A properly functioning balance system allows humans to see clearly while moving, identify orientation with respect to gravity, determine direction and speed of movement, and make automatic postural adjustments to maintain posture and stability in various conditions and activities.

Balance is achieved and maintained by a complex set of sensorimotor control systems that include sensory input from vision, touch, and the motion system; integration of that sensory input; and motor output to the eye and body muscles. Injury, disease, certain drugs, or the aging process can affect one or more of these components. In addition to the contribution of sensory information, there may also be psychological factors that impair our sense of balance. You should practice your balance every day.

How Does The Balance System Work
A complex system controls your body’s ability to balance. While it may be taken for granted, your body’s balancing system is susceptible to malfunction or debilitate. Your sight, hearing and other sensory systems help to regulate your balance. All of these systems must work together for your body to maintain its balance. Therefore, the diagnosing of a balance issue is often difficult. Because so many different parts of the body are involved. For balance issues that are not treatable by medication or surgery, balance rehabilitation is an available option.

Our Brain Controls Balance
Our brain controls our balance. However, it needs sensors to keep updated, such as the eyes, the inner ear, joints and the muscles, everywhere from the head to the feet. However, if they are impaired, the signals may not be clear. As a result, our balance will weaken. As we age and get weaker muscles, it will affect our balance. Subsequently, we are in danger of serious life-threatening falls.

Loss of muscle mass: Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia is the loss of skeletal muscle mass and starts in the mid-30s as skeletal muscle mass is reduced. Combined with years of inactivity, it leaves you weak. Consequently, the dangers of a life-threatening fall are severe.

Reduced HGH secretions: Somatopause
Middle-aged spread (somatopause) starts in your 40s. It is the gradual reduction of human growth hormone (HGH) secretions. The first signs are skin wrinkles and putting on weight. Secondly, the gradual reduction in bone density begins leaving your immunity and bones vulnerable. The risk of serious organ diseases and fall-damaged bones happens and can be life-threatening.

Falls resulting in skull fractures.
Skull fractures are life-threatening injuries. Together, Sarcopenia and Somatopause will have a serious effect on your strength, mobility and balance. Falls often result in bone fractures. Skull fractures will need surgery and seriously damage the brain. Bruising or bleeding is serious and may have post-injury consequences.

Falls resulting in hip fractures
Hip fractures are as serious as skull fractures. A fractured hip may need an operation as a result of low bone density. Hip bones can shatter into sharp shards, which could sever the femoral artery. The femoral artery, when severed, will cause death in minutes. If this happens and you are alone at home, it is unlikely you will get help quickly. Hospitals and surgeons have serious financial restraints and difficulties in bed allocations, so they must prioritize. As a result, at 70 plus years with a hairline fractured hip. You could be sent home to heal naturally, with total bed rest. Also, some 20% of fractured hips result in death, especially in older women, as their bodies are not strong enough to recover from a serious hip injury.

Total bed rest means families and caregivers
Total bed rest needs carers or family support. Many challenges come with total bed rest at home. As a result, a heavy burden on the family or a full-time carer would be necessary. The cost of full-time carers is prohibitive and comes with many challenges. It is also unlikely that a family would have the skill, resources, or enthusiasm for such a challenging undertaking. However, if this is not possible, the only other option is a care home. Many older adults fear the loss of dignity and losing control of their destiny if they enter care homes. Also, there have been many recorded abuse cases in care homes in the past, which does not help. The result: loss of independence and loss of the family home with little chance of regaining either.

Your balance can be improved with practice.
At any age, you can improve on your current balance with some simple exercises. Especially if completed daily, it will improve. In the first place, you may have doubts or disbelief. But remember, no one ever walked a tightrope perfectly on day one. However, they failed many times until their balance improved, and yours will be too. Also, anyone can easily test their balance at home using a simple test that you can see in the video. Improving Balance is essential for your fall prevention and your independence. You should practice your balance every day.

A stability ball
A stability ball helps improve your balance. It is a great aid to help improve your ability to balance. These are not terribly expensive, but should you decide you want to buy one, most sports shops and online at Amazon are easy places to get one.

Simple household items
In your own home with no equipment, using your body and a simple household item, you can test and improve your balance using simple exercises that improve your results. There is no cost except for the time you spend testing and practising to improve daily. As a result, if you are determined to improve your balance and practise daily, you will see results. Improving balance is a must because balance is a use-it-or-lose-it skill.

Improve your balance with practice. For best results, commit to practicing your balance using these methods daily for just two weeks.

The last word
As you age, your balance has to be high on your list of things to improve. It is essential for your health and your ability to remain independent. And you need to bear in mind that it is a use-it-or-lose-it skill that you cannot afford to lose. Practicing balance should be taken seriously. Take all safety measures to ensure your safety when practicing.

ADULTERY, Paulo Coelho

2016-03-09_09h54_53Adultery, the provocative new novel by Paulo Coelho, best-selling author of The Alchemist and Eleven Minutes, explores the question of what it means to live life fully and happily, finding the balance between life’s routine and the desire for something new. [summary from Goodreads]

First impressions

“Utter piece of ‘unadulterated’ crap! Absolutely unbelievable. “ That was my reaction to this novel at the beginning. I ploughed on. It didn’t get any better.

The story is about a journalist living in Geneva, Switzerland. In her thirties, she is married to a successful businessman and has two children. Life seems very normal and everyday-like for this woman until she bumps into an old boyfriend from her teenage days. A spark either of curiosity, impetuosity or lust strikes her and she has sex with him, oral sex where he was the totally passive partner.

The story is a self-examination, introspection narrated by our adulterous who questions the reasons for doing what she did. She begins analysing her life, her marriage, her work and her day to day living, all rather mundane reading at this point for any reader. Perhaps she is suffering from depression? Could her feelings be guilt based? Is her lust just a passing phase? Is she mentally ill?

The relationship with the lover never really develops any depth as the man seems to be insensitive and engaged in the illicit activity purely for self-gratification. There is no affection, no empathy or any emotional sensitivity for his partner. She may as well have been an unpaid prostitute, there to fulfill the needs of his libido. At this point, some readers would be angry with the lover, disgusted with the journalist and put off with the superficiality of this illicit relationship.

Dog cruelty, attention grabbing

Midway through the book there is an incident the journalist recalls about her torturing an old boyfriend’s dog. Being a dog owner and a lifelong lover of the animals, I found this anecdote particularly repulsive. Her cruelty upset me and removed any sympathy or empathy for her which may have been developing in me. I now saw her as a cruel, selfish being who had no real feelings for living beings, beast or human. What the purpose of such an episode in the book is beyond me: to alienate me, the reader from being supportive of the journalist; to repulse me so much that I lost all potential empathy for her; to so antagonize me that I find trying to understand her totally unacceptable. I don’t know what the purpose of the dog anecdote but I found it to be very disconcerting.

Our inner monsters

Soon the narrator begins talking about Mary Shelley and Robert Louis Stevenson, creators of the literary monsters Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll’s Mr. Hyde. The literary monsters are metaphors for the monsters that are part of every human’s psyche. Not necessarily evil personas within humans, but spiritual negativity which impacts adversely on our daily life. ‘Regret’ for not having done something in life, for not having pursued a career goal, for not fulfilling a dream in life, each of these can wreak havoc on the serenity of one’s soul as the regret relentlessly nags away at a person: a failure for not successfully completing in life which they should have completed. It seems like a narrow view as humans succeed to a degree in every endeavour in their lives. “Failure” can be used only if the person compares their life with another’s and feels envious of the other. These emotional scars are the monsters that continually deter a person from finding satisfaction with their life.

The evil monsters dominate every person eventually. The monstrous Mr. Hyde eventually took control of the good Dr. Jekyll. Every dictator eventually succumbs to the evil within and becomes the evil monster. Readers may find this philosophy of life difficult to believe or to accept.

The author wields a mean verbal sword

“Whoever maintains that wrong is done to heretics and blasphemers in punishing them makes himself an accomplice in their crimes and as guilty as they. There is no question here of man’s authority; it is God who speaks […]. Wherefore does he demand of us a so extreme severity, if not to show us that due honor is not paid him, so long as we set not his service above every consideration, so that we spare not kin, nor blood of any, and forget all humanity when the matter is to combat for his glory.”

The author has a mastery of the language, although much is lost in the translation as he ‘talks too much.’ His historical anecdotes are interesting spins on accepted truisms of history. Calvin may have been a religious revolutionary, but according to author Paul Coelho, he was a theocratic totalitarian who persecuted and punished non-adherents to his religious doctrine.

Searching for psychiatric remedies

The narrator of the story, Linda, at one point begins to see her emotional and spiritual upheaval as possibly being symptoms of depression which starts her quest for psychoanalytical help. Rejecting a number of licensed practitioners, she discovers an ‘alternative’ practitioner, a Cuban who others have touted as a high priest of cures for depression, a shaman. She finds some solace in meeting with him but more questioning and clarification of her life’s journey rather than any kind of cure. The shaman helps Linda to resolve and deal with the adulterous affair, not accept it so much, but to see it as playing a logical and understandable role in her life.

Again, Coelho interprets history to suit his needs: justification of adultery as being in man’s DNA because survival of the species depended upon creating numerous offspring. Hence the need for multiple partners. Reducio ad absurdum! In his interpretation, man never rises above the level of a primate living by base instincts like animals in nature. Thinking, intellectual considerations, cerebral creativity, all are completely irrelevant and rejected.

Switzerland the land of objectivity, logic and pragmatism

The author regularly inserts commentary relating to Switzerland, its economy, its culture and its society. The Swiss are pragmatic automatons who live lives mechanically, never being passionate, always respectful of personal privacies. Stereotypical insertions used by many people throughout the world but is their use warranted in the development of the story?

Psyche and Eros

Then he relates the tale from Greek mythological of Eros, the goddess of love, forbidden from ever seeing the face of her betrothed, Psyche, the handsomest of all the gods. Like Lot’s wife turning back to look at what God has forbidden her to see, Eros looks at Psyche for which she is punished by the gods. Zeus successfully pleads her case and with the support of Aphrodite wins eternal bonding of the two lovers, Psyche (our unconscious, but logical side) and Eros (love). When her husband tells Linda the Greek fable, she suspects he knows of her infidelity but says nothing in that regard.

As the story continues to unfold, Linda wrestles with the demons of guilt and lust. She meets with her lover one more time in an episode described in the pastels of “50 Shades of Grey.” She will never meet with him again.

Stretching the limits of credibility

Coelho’s writing tests the reader’s limits of credibility. Can a logical, reasoning and sane person really be as cynical and negative about life as much as the book’s main character? Hard to accept or believe. Is dinner conversation about affairs, infidelity and such possible topics with guests one hardly knows? Could such a discussion take place in the real world and could deepen into confessions about partner infidelity? I am very skeptical that this happens regularly if at all in the real world.

Linda is insufferable. She is infatuated with the titillation of forbidden fruit. She dwells on it and bites into it with the maturity of a rebellious teen. Many readers might see the actions of a supposedly mature, intelligent, thinking and successful professional as puzzling and irreconcilable. It may be viewed as living with an attitude of immaturity, lacking refinement and sophistication and living by the primal instincts of an animal.

Coelho probes, prods and pricks the consciousness and conscience of his readers. His questions are not related to morality, virtue and integrity but are existential exploration of why we are here, the meaning of life and what is the purpose of our existence.

Questionably, he closes his story standing on his philosophical soapbox: the reason for living is to continue the never ending quest of learning to love. Pedantic bullshit in my view.

POINT COUNTERPOINT: Disagree with Rosie Dimanno Torstar column

Rosie Dimanno is an outstanding Toronto Star columnist who writes superb columns regularly, excellent in content, often spot on in opinion and always erudite and engaging.

Recently she wrote a column in praise of a Afghan refugee competing in the Olympic and who promoted her cause in opposition to Taliban abuse of women.

See –> REFUGEE PROTEST

Bringing greater awareness to the is good; using the Olympics to do so, is not. I wrote Rose the following:

Rosie,

You completely missed the point: the Olympics are not a political stage, nor should they ever be. While your support for women, Afghan women, and Manizha Talash in her political cause is commendable, the Olympics is not the place for it. The Olympics is a pure sports competition, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) strives to maintain it as such. The Games celebrate human physicality and competition, not political ideologies or human rights issues. They are meant to be an athletic event, not a platform for political causes. Yes, the misogyny and human rights violations by Afghan leaders are egregious and widely condemned as unjust. However, using the Olympics to declare these violations changes nothing. Just as Israel’s actions against Palestinians can be criticized, the Taliban’s policies are equally wrong. It’s undeniable that Taliban policies harm women, and we should strive to make a positive impact through the United Nations, public opinion, economic sanctions, and international ostracization. But using the Olympic podium is not the way. Today, the Olympics aims to remain clean and pure, despite facing challenges from terrorism to exploitation attempts. Talash has a valid cause, and everyone should support her efforts, but the Olympics cannot and should not be her platform. Your support for Talash is justified, and we must praise her cause and goals. However, we should not endorse her using the Olympics to promote her political stance.

EDITORIAL: Let’s stop….

Let’s stop….

  • the griping
  • the complaining
  • the conflicting
  • the combatting

The world’s in need of change. There seems to be endless whining, complaining and bitching. Fewer and fewer people compromise, cooperate or team play. Worse, the complainers escalate their verbal animosity to levels of increasing violence.

How do we get back to the world of cooperation and compromise, the world of hearing and listening, a world where we unite at the table instead of fighting at it?

Too many people have abandoned the idea of team playing, of cooperation of joining in rather than demanding the head honcho’s seat. Too many people want to be Chiefs rather than Indians. Worse, when they aren’t heard or listened to, too many people resort to ever-increasing aggressive levels of intensity in their reactions and responses.

How do we persuade people to become listeners rather than aggressors? How do we calm people’s thinking and escalate the emotion, energetic vitriol that makes violence more acceptable than discussion?

Consider the effects of the attitude that seems to be prevalent throughout the world:

  • HATE CRIMES increasing in frequency;
  • GUN VIOLENCE growing in occurrences;
  • AGGRESSIVE RESPONSE to disagreement to often first response;
  • NATIONS response to disagreements with bombing and genocide;
  • PEACE KEEPER voices drowned out by aggressive actors.

So where do we go from here? Do we do nothing? Do  we accept the status quo? Do we tolerate these responses? Where do you stand on all this? Do you care?

PICKERING: Food Bank OPEN HOUSE a great success

St. Paul-on-the-Hill Food Bank OPEN HOUSE & BBQ were a resounding success and Food Bank Director, Lindsey Morrill, deserves for bring as much efficiency and success to this event as she does to operating the Food Bank.

_____________________________
Editorial comment: We wish we could pass on the compliments on Lindsey’s work. It is asking a lot but we would rather see the issues causing the food bank patronage successfully resolved rather than complimenting their efficient operations.

Kehinde Ladipo, Church Warden. St. Paul’s on the Hill), Janet Herrera (Church Warden, St. Paul’s on the Hill), MPP Peter Bethlenfalvy, Lindsey Morrill, Food Bank Directorf, Jan Laughlin, Craig Bamford

The event was tremendously well-attended by federal, provincial and municipal politicos and representatives from many organizations from the Pickering Durham region: Jennifer O’Connell, Peter Bethlenfalvy, Shaheen Butt,  Regional Chair John Henry and Ajax Councillor Nancy Henry (not related). As well, there were numerous politically aspiring candidates in another political arena: Raveena Rajasingham, Ruchi Wali and Nancy VanRooy. Then too, there were members from a number of the City ratepayer associations: Craig Bamford, Gary Winsor, Abdullah Mir. And an educational trustee, Emma Cunningham. Next, Margaret Shedden Eskins , DARS. Last but not least, so many people, Barbara Twiner from the City’s gardening association and city activist Richard Szpin.

Finally, kudos to so many volunteers, from Cathy Bamford to Frank, her stalwart hamburger flipper, to Bethlenfalvys exec assistants, Adam Bradley and Scott, who was doing his best on the wurst stand.

Then, we would be remiss not to mention that volunteer stalwarts gave explanatory tours of the Food Bank’s inner workings.

This was an event to attend and enjoy. It was a celebration of the strong support people give the St. Paul on the Hill Food Bank. As importantly, it reinforces that the people of Pickering care; they care about their needy residents and support endeavours that give them assistance. It also was an opportunity for important political leaders to show their support for the needy. It’s great to have such wonderful residents and elected representatives who understand and believe we are our brothers’ keepers. However, we hope the politicos bring the message back to the powers that be that we do not want to celebrate food bank successes as much as we like to celebrate the end of the need for them with effective government policies and programs.

Nevertheless, to all the people behind the scenes and who attended as invited guests, thank you for your hard work and support.

update HEALTH: Pickering to get Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre

The Ontario government is connecting more people to the care they need by enhancing the rehabilitation and recovery services available to patients and their families close to home. Announced on August 1st, 2024, the province is bringing Durham Region’s first stand-alone Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre to Pickering as part of Lakeridge Health’s master redevelopment plan.

“It is an amazing day for our community with the announcement of a new Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre in Pickering, which will provide the specialized care and support patients need to recover and thrive,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge. “This facility represents our commitment to enhancing healthcare services by investing in a brighter, healthier future for all residents of Pickering and Durham Region.”

What it means
Post-acute care services offer additional support to individuals who have been discharged from acute care hospitals. If complications arise, these services make it easier to provide the necessary assistance before issues escalate. This approach can prevent hospital readmissions, promoting faster healing and allowing patients to be closer to their families and caregivers during their recovery period.

Mayor Ashe appreciative of new facility
“As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Durham Region, Pickering will greatly benefit from the addition of this new, first stand-alone Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre,” said Kevin Ashe, Mayor of the City of Pickering. “This facility will significantly expand local health services for our residents, providing essential care during the critical recovery phase and reinforcing Pickering’s commitment to a healthier and stronger community. I’d like to thank Premier Ford, Minister Bethlenfalvy, and the Ontario government for their commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Pickering.”

Services provided by the new Rehabilitation Centre
Pickering’s Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre will be designed to provide a seamless connection between acute hospital care and home-based recovery as patients transition from hospital to home, offering comprehensive support tailored to meet diverse recovery needs. By focusing on personalized care, the facility will address the gap in services that many patients and families face during the critical recovery phase and improve outcomes for patients.

“We are thrilled that the Province of Ontario is investing in health infrastructure at Lakeridge Health campuses across Durham Region,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer for The Regional Municipality of Durham. “In Pickering, a new post-acute care centre will provide residents with a continuum of care through greater access to recovery and rehabilitation services and supports closer to home following a hospital discharge. This new centre will help patients—and their families—transition back into their daily lives, while alleviating pressures in Durham Region’s hospital network.”

Professionals available with the service
A multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and specialized nursing staff, will collaborate to deliver a holistic approach to rehabilitation, focusing on both the physical and emotional aspects of recovery. Each patient will receive a customized care plan designed to maximize their recovery potential. By receiving specialized care and rehabilitation services, seniors in our community are more likely to experience better recovery outcomes.

“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is making record investments to build a health care system that lasts, connecting more people in Durham Region and across Ontario to the care they need, when they need it,” said Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health. “In Pickering, the new Post Acute Rehabilitation Centre will ensure people of all ages can access convenient care, close to home on their journey to recovery.”

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees at Lakeridge Health, we want to thank our government partners for their transformative investment,” said Cordelia Clarke Julien, Chair, Lakeridge Health Board of Trustees. “At Lakeridge Health, we have a vision of One System. Best Health. and we work every day to deliver this through an integrated health system. The new post-acute care centre aligns with this vision and our efforts to expand access to excellent patient care beyond the walls of our hospitals to reach more people, in all their diversity.”

“We are profoundly grateful for the inclusion of the new post-acute care centre as part of the Ontario government’s generous support of Lakeridge Health,” said Cynthia Davis, President and CEO, Lakeridge Health. “We stand on the brink of a new era in health care for Durham Region. As part of this historic investment in Lakeridge Health, the post-acute care centre will be a crucial part of our planning to ensure the region’s rapidly growing and diverse population receives exceptional and specialized care close to home in a safe and timely manner.”

Lakeridge Health will determine the precise location of the facility in Pickering as part of the planning stage. This site will be a large part of the integrated health system across the Durham Region, supporting acute care in hospitals across the community. Pickering will be a key location to host post-acute patients and their families.

Quick Facts

  • To date, the Ontario government has provided more than $12 million in capital planning grants to support Lakeridge Health’s master redevelopment plan, which includes Pickering’s Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centre.
  • Acute care is a type of secondary health care that provides active, short-term treatment for patients with severe injuries, sudden illnesses, urgent medical conditions, or those recovering from surgery.
  • Post-Acute Rehabilitation Centres help avoid hospital readmissions through the additional supports in place, promoting faster recovery.
  • Returning to normal life as planned, or even sooner, aids individuals in smoothly transitioning back to home.

HEALTH: Which is better for losing weight, DIET or EXERCISE?

Feeling overwhelmed by all the diet and nutrition advice out there? You’re not alone. Television, newspapers, magazines, radio, the internet… everywhere you turn there are ads and articles telling you what you should and shouldn’t eat. Unfortunately, the information is often unproven, contradictory and just downright sketchy. It’s tempting to give up and give in to your sugar/salt/saturated fat cravings and let the chip crumbs fall where they may.

_____________________

But it’s a far better idea not to. A nutritious, well-balanced diet is important to health and well-being throughout the lifespan and helps us maintain strength, mobility and a good quality of life as we age. It’s never too late to make better food choices but some people try to do too much at once, which can lead to frustration and failure.

Take five for better health
Why not start with just a few changes, such as the five listed below? They’re simple, sensible and proven to help promote healthy aging based on research evidence from recent systematic reviews.

  1. Please pass (up) the salt
You’ve always heard that too much salt is bad for you. Now research confirms the benefits of cutting back: reducing your sodium intake will help lower your blood pressure, which in turn decreases your risk of heart disease. The main culprit is processed foods (1).
  2. Nothing fishy about this advice
Another good way to promote heart health is to eat more salmon, mackerel, tuna and other fish high in omega-3 fatty acids. Don’t like fish? Try fish oil supplements. Research shows that people with high blood pressure who took fish oil supplements saw a small drop in their blood pressure readings (2).
  3. Cut the (saturated) fat
When it comes to our diet, not all fat is created equal. Saturated fat – common in meat and dairy – is the one we need to be most concerned about. According to research, reducing the saturated fat in our daily diets and replacing some with healthier unsaturated fats – found in plant oils – can lower our risk of heart disease (3).
  4. Go Mediterranean
Need the structure of a diet plan to stay on track? There are so many to choose from, ranging from the sensible to the bizarre. The Mediterranean diet is one of the former. It supports the other recommendations by encouraging people to eat more vegetables, fruit, fish, whole grains and unsaturated fats such as olive oil (4-7). A vegetarian diet is another option that emphasizes similar foods and plant-based fats and protein (8).

Diabetic? There is evidence that a Mediterranean diet can also improve your blood sugar, insulin and blood pressure levels as well as help you lose weight (6;7).

  1. Take care with your choice of tableware
For people who are overweight or at risk of obesity, reducing portion sizes can help cut down on un-needed calories. Did you know that the size of the plate, package or portion you are offered can influence how much food you eat and drink? Use a smaller plate and say no to ‘super-sized’ portions to help avoid the health risks associated with weight gain (9-11).

Small, steady improvements for long-term success
When you’re ready to make some healthy diet tweaks, the suggestions above are a good place to begin and can help get you on the right track without biting off more than you can chew (which is also another good eating tip). You can then incorporate additional nutrition and lifestyle changes as needed to help you achieve your own personal health goals.

It’s also a good idea to discuss your diet plan with your doctor, particularly if you have a chronic disease or other medical condition that can be affected by your diet.

POLITICS: HATE MONGERING thrives in Pickering? Robinson vs Council: where do you stand? (updated 8 8 24)

RUMBLE
Kevin J. Johnston hosts a show, Rumble, where he engages in discussions on various topics, often focusing on controversial issues and current events. His channel features a variety of content, including interviews, debates, and commentary, reflecting his views on freedom, politics, and social issues.

The show includes segments where he explores the impact of media narratives on public perception and Johnston engages in live discussions with guests on pressing topics. Recently he hosted an episode interviewing City of Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson.
______________________________________

[Personal comment: I watched as much of the Robinson episode as I could tolerate. Though never having seen any of Kevin Johnston’s broadcasts before, it is clearly evident he is one of those media personalities who promote themselves as doing community public service by promoting certain political views. In my opinion, the views are ceaselessly negative, aggressive, and interspersed endlessly with derogatory, insulting and offensive labels.

He is the type of media figure many principled people would oppose and wish to silence. However, rather than silencing them, we need to speak out against them and emphasize how they are hate-mongers pandering to the baser-level people of our society.

No legitimate, ethical interviewer would justify the use and voicing of labels such as “morbidly obese pedophile,” “dumb looking face,” “crazy look on her face,” “psychopath,” or “leftist scumbag” to people being interviewed or who are being discussed. No ethical or principled interviewer would justify the use of phrases such as “deserves a baseball bat in the face,” “LGBTQ loser who doesn’t pay any property taxes,” or calling a political candidate, Bonnie Crombie, “a psychopath.”

Comments about a person’s appearance are reprehensible, unwarranted and unacceptable. Extreme labels such as “psychopath” and “pedophile” are examples of free speech taken too far.

But that may be the raison d’etre of shows of this kind: not to present facts but to rile people into accepting and believing this kind of material. This may explain the development of such unreasonable support for politicians like T****, campaigning for re-election as the United States President.

These kinds of shows should be allowed if we are adherents of free speech. However, the general public needs explanation, cautioning and forewarning as to what is being viewed. These are hate-mongers promoting a hate-filled agenda and should be highlighted as such.

Mayor & Council’s Statement
on Councillor Robinson’s Rumble Video

Pickering, ON, August 7, 2024 – We, the Mayor and Members of Pickering City Council, are deeply troubled by Councillor Lisa Robinson’s recent appearance on Kevin J. Johnston’s online show on Rumble, a far-right video content platform. Johnston is a notorious figure who has served time in jail, owes millions of dollars in court-ordered damages to victims of his lies, and is currently a fugitive from Canadian law, having fled to Panama. The platform that hosts the show is itself infamous for promoting hate speech, misinformation, and extremist views, crossing all boundaries of decency and legality.

During the broadcast, the host published the names, pictures, and personal phone numbers of Council Members, falsely and dangerously labelling us as “pedophiles”, “Nazis”, and “Fascists”, explicitly stating that we “deserve a baseball bat to the face”; suggesting that a vicious and powerful dog be let loose at City Council meetings to attack and maim us; and expressing the need for 70s biker types with big biceps and scarred knuckles to remove us by force. This inflammatory, defamatory, and violent rhetoric is not only reprehensible but also poses a direct threat to our safety and the safety of our families.

Councillor Robinson’s decision to appear on such a show, fully aware of Johnston’s history and the nature of his platform, is irresponsible, unethical, and dangerous – and in clear violation of the Council Code of Conduct. We will be filing a joint complaint to the Integrity Commissioner for this most recent breach. Despite Johnston’s claim that his views were his own, Councillor Robinson’s participation and her supportive nodding to Johnston’s comments is an implied endorsement of the vile and dangerous views expressed during the broadcast. This includes the podcast’s attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, the host’s vilification of Black Lives Matter, and the broader spread of hate-filled ideologies that have no place in our community.

Throughout the broadcast, the host mocked the physical appearance of Members of the Council, made numerous defamatory statements towards multiple individuals, and used increasingly violent language. Instead of refuting or condemning these reprehensible comments, Councillor Robinson often smiled, chuckled, or nodded her head in agreement throughout. Her willingness to align herself with such an individual and imply her support of his dangerous views is very alarming.

This behaviour is particularly disturbing in light of the recent Toronto Star story detailing Councillor Robinson’s courting of far-right extremists. Despite her public denials, her appearance on this show and her ongoing conduct makes it clear that she is aligning herself with ideologies that are diametrically opposed to the values of inclusivity, respect, and dignity that we uphold in Pickering.

Councillor Robinson claims she is merely ‘giving a voice’ to her constituents. We know this is not true. We listen to our residents, and we know that the overwhelming majority oppose her views. Instead of listening to her constituents, we feel Councillor Robinson is exploiting these extreme views in a blatant effort to boost her public profile. Many of her constituents have denounced her actions, yet she refuses to consider or accept their perspectives, choosing instead to endorse dangerous and divisive far-right rhetoric.

Since her election to office, Councillor Robinson has opposed Pride events, denounced Black History Month, questioned the integrity of Durham Regional Police, and fostered division within our city. These actions have not only disrupted the business of our municipality but have also created an environment of fear and intimidation, which has been intensified by her participation in this podcast. Over the past year, we have all received volatile and hateful emails and messages from Councillor Robinson’s supporters. Collectively, we have received threats of violence, ranging from assault to even death.

We are concerned that Councillor Robinson’s appearance on this extremist’s show will only incite more violent attitudes and behaviours. In addition to our personal safety and well-being, we are also concerned about our families, City staff, and various members of our community who have been undeservedly and irresponsibly called out in this video.

It is also important to note that Councillor Robinson has previously been found in violation of the City’s Code of Conduct by the Integrity Commissioner. As a consequence, her Council pay was docked in an effort to punish and deter such unethical behaviour. However, she has been actively soliciting donations and funding from far-right sources, as demonstrated by her appearance on platforms like Rumble. In this video, she admits to receiving funding from her ideological supporters, but there is no accounting or disclosure of the monies she is receiving. We are deeply concerned that her acceptance of these funds makes her even more vulnerable to extreme and dangerous influences that could originate from the U.S. and other jurisdictions outside of Canada.

This situation highlights a fundamental flaw under the Municipal Act. A sitting member of the municipal council should not be able to freely solicit and accept money without transparency or accountability. This lack of oversight could potentially invite influence peddling, bribery, and corruption. As Councillor Robinson continues to receive this funding without any disclosure or accountability, we believe the Government of Ontario should take immediate action to close this glaring loophole and amend the Municipal Act to allow for stricter sanctions beyond suspension of pay. We will be issuing a formal request to Premier Doug Ford and MPP Paul Calandra, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

Kevin Ashe, Mayor
Maurice Brenner, Regional Councillor, Ward 1
Linda Cook, Regional Councillor, Ward 2
David Pickles, Regional Councillor, Ward 3
Mara Nagy, City Councillor, Ward 2
Shaheen Butt, City Councillor, Ward 3

Yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but no one needs to hear or read this type of atrocious hate mongering.

This “Rumble” nonsense should be investigated by the RCMP and taken offline and destroyed

Please take all actions to limit or stop all inappropriate gathering of money without transparency or accountability. Canadians do not want or support foreign influences at any level of our government – municipal, provincial or federal.

Richard replies...
Councillor Lisa,
As much as I want to cut you slack in this interaction about K. Johnston’s video, Rumble, I find it too upsetting to listen to a person countering remarks in discussion with insults, extreme labelling and nitpicking in hopes that he hits the targets, of truth and fact. Johnston’s constant generalizations (all public media is false), constant insulting labelling of all his opponents as ‘pedophiles,’ and relentless denigration of people based on appearance are unacceptable and not tolerable. He would likely label me as a morbidly obese, opinionated pedophile.

For starters, I am an educated person and a reasonably intelligent thinker. But in his realm, he would focus on my appearance, ipso facto, that I am all that follows from ‘morbidly obese.’ His constant generalizations and insulting labelling detract and distract from the discussion. How can “baseball bat to the face” possibly have any relevance to the discussion? The use of such statements can only create tension and stress.

My time and energy are as valuable and worthwhile as yours. In that light, I chose to stop viewing Johnston’s response to Ashe’s press release. Johnston uses bashing people with his aggressive insults in the hope that it results in confirmation of their being valid. ‘Pedophiles,’ morbidly obese,’ and such have no relevance to the discussion whatsoever. They are verbal bullying. I do not want to waste time dealing with a person who sees such schemes as reasonable discussion.
I do not think it is in the public interest that I provide links to the current Johnston rebuttal based on my preceding remarks. The man is a showboat hoping that with enough insulting and offensive attacks, he can raise the ire of his targets, who then may respond to his remarks with careless or poor responses. This is not how appropriate discussions between reasonable and reasoning people are done.

ALBATROSS by Terry Fallis

Albatross

Terry Fallis

Fallis, the Stephen Leacock of our times, maybe. But not with his latest work, Albatross. With this novel, ‘philanthropist,’ ‘humanitarian’ may be more appropriate labels.

Synopsis

Phys ed teacher, Bobbie Davenport does some physical measurements on four of her male gym students. Based on the research of a Swedish scientist, one student not only stands out, but stands out by miles. According to the guide presented in The Scandinavian Journal of Kinesiology and Sports Medicine study, Adam Coryell is your average high-school student–well, except for that obsession with fountain pens–when his life changes forever. Based on a study by a quirky Swedish professor that claims that every human being, regardless of athletic inclination, has a body that is suited to excel in at least one sport, it turns out that Adam is good–very good, in fact–at golf. COOKz: The EASIEST vs The BEST CORN cooking methods

The EASIEST (1-2 EARS) – MICROWAVE

1. Place ear, husk and all, into the microwave, high heat, 3 minutes. [More ears, increase time to 5-6 minutes] You will need to experiment with the times as different ovens yield different results but 1 ear-3min, 3+ears – 6 minutes should be about right.]

2. Remove corn from oven with oven mitt. Allow to cool a few minutes until corn can be handled.

3. On a cutting board, slice off the bottom of the corn just above the stem so that you can more easily slip the ear out of the husk once it’s cooked, supposedly free of almost all its silks.

__________________

The BEST (many EARS) – BOILED (not quite)

1. HUSK and CLEAN SILK from corn ears (8-10 ears depending on needs)
2. Cut each ear into thirds
3. Cover with water in large pot for “boiling”
4. Heat until water reaches 180F
5. Remove from heat. Cover with lid and allow to stand for 10 minutes*
6. Drain corn and serve.

[ * Standing time can be varied from 10-20 mins. Ideal way to have corn stay hot for serving without worry of ruining the corn. Ideal time is 10 minutes but anymore up to 10 min more will not ruin the corn at all.]

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Voices like Pickering Councillor Robinson must be heard

Voices like Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson must be heard and listening does not presume agreement.

Councillor Robinson is an elected official, a mature thinking adult and an opinionated politician. She takes positions that some may find objectionable, others not so. However, like the proverbial broken clock is correct twice each day, the more one says, the great are the chance that some of the material may have validity.

Robinson hits the mark often but in her vast statements, she also deviates from accuracy or validity. For instance, she has a point in saying that developers are very entangled in municipal affairs when it comes to Pickering development but asserting that it is bribery and corruption is stretching too far. Another, Ashe may have used labels such as wacko, Nazis and the like, but labelling him a racist is another example of overstretch. From the very start, Robinson has some valid poses, such as saying isolating one group in public flag-raising ignores other groups, but calling it segregation or polarization is a stretch.

Voices like Robinson or any voice publishing in the public arena need to be taken with a grain of salt, not digested holus bolus. The statements need to be analysed, evaluated and weighed before they are accepted or rejected. But such consideration takes time, patience, energy and effort, characteristics that are becoming increasingly eroded in the general public using social media. And there’s the problem!!!

Social media is used today with less and less regard as to its validity or authenticity. Too many people jump on its band wagon as quickly as the message or posting is published. The most recent example is the rioting taking place in the UK over the stabbing deaths of the three children. The social media claim was that the perpetrator was a refugee, colored, and a terrorist fundamentalist. False! Authorities identified the perpetrator as a native born British citizen with no ties with any terrorist organization. However, the rioting crowds missed the message. The mob acted just as a mob acts, emotionally, gut reaction without thinking and consideration.

Voices from the far right or any part of the political spectrum should be heard but given serious and broad consideration and evaluation before they are accepted or rejected. This is as true for local politics as it is in the wider world.

Here are the key points:

Councillor Robinson strongly condemns Mayor Ashe for allegedly labelling residents of Durham as racists in a social media post on the “Free Speech Pickering” group.

Councillor Robinson accuses Mayor Ashe of repeatedly using derogatory terms like “nutcases,” “wackos,” and “Nazis” to describe those who disagree with him.

Councillor Mara Nagy is criticized for liking the mayor’s post, which Councillor Robinson sees as endorsing divisive language.

Councillor Robinson argues that this behaviour undermines democratic discourse and disrespects diverse perspectives in the community.

The statement calls for Mayor Ashe to retract his comments and apologize to the people of Durham.

Councillor Robinson expresses concern about the overall political climate in Pickering, describing it as “toxic” and “disturbing.”

There’s a call for a change in leadership style, emphasizing the need for unity, respect, and constructive dialogue.

PICKERING COUNCIL: City should offer citizens better eye glasses to read COUNCILLOR EXPENSE REPORTS

TRANSPARENCY or OBSCURITY?

Pickering City Councillors’ expense reports lack essential transparency and accountability. The current reporting system obscures crucial details, making it nearly impossible for taxpayers to scrutinize how their money is being spent.

The expense reports fail to provide critical information:

  • No explanation of the purpose or relevance of claimed items to city business
  • Lack of justification for local taxi use when councillors receive car allowances
  • No details on accompanying individuals for claimed trips
  • Absence of mandatory actual receipts
  • Potential fees for Freedom of Information requests to access more details

This opaque system raises serious concerns about the potential misuse of public funds. Historical examples of expense abuse, such as the
Bev Oda scandal, involving exorbitant claims for luxury items, underscores the importance of rigorous oversight.

To ensure the proper use of taxpayer money, expense reports should include:

  • Detailed explanations of each expense’s purpose and relevance to city business
  • Justification for transportation choices
  • Information on any accompanying individuals
  • Mandatory submission of actual receipts
  • Free access to detailed expense information for taxpayers

Without these improvements, Pickering’s expense reporting system remains as transparent as a boarded-up window, leaving taxpayers in the dark about how their money is being spent by city councillors.

The City has glasses for better viewing of Councillor Expense Reports…

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Politicians eschewing residency in the riding they represent…hypocrisy?

Why is it that people elected to represent our community don’t live here? As an example, Peter Bethlenfalvy. Apparently, he rents a condo under the guise that he is a long-time resident. This is probably a requirement to skirt the Elections Act. He was and is a Toronto resident who resided in the well-heeled parts of Toronto. Now the same issue faces us with the upcoming Federal election. Over a dozen people are running to represent Pickering-Brooklin (Uxbridge got dropped), and only 2 to 3 live in Pickering. We don’t need or want people who have no vested interest in our community. Some involve themselves with local charities to show how involved they are, but they know very little about what the makeup of the community is.

Party politics has shanghaied our electoral system. I want a local person who I can hold accountable for their actions and who responds to the community’s needs.

POLITICS: Poilievre shows how classless he really is….HATE SPEECH MONGER !

Just what we need in the office of Prime Minister, a politician who disregards HATE SPEECH.

Recently, Poilievre referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (as well as the Liberal and New Democratic parties) as “extremists,” “raving wackos” and “lunatics” who “detest the working class” and have “total disdain for the common people.”

Poilievre’s indifference to the harms of inflammatory speech is irresponsible. Elsewhere in the country, heated language toward politicians has risen to the level of threats of violence.

When questioned about his HATE LABELS…“No need to tone down,” he declared. “My criticisms of the prime minister are entirely reasonable.”

Really….this political leader is Canada’s T**** and no logical, thinking person would ever consider voting for that American blowhard. So are you going to vote for his Canadian one?

EDITORIALS: Political promises need to be taken with a ‘grain of salt’

A lot of hot air!

The nature of the beast is to blow hot air all the time, either to persuade voters to vote for them or to persuade them to vote against the people in power. Either way, the hot air is promises, endless promises.

Voters need a little reminder to take all those promises with a grain of salt. Politicians cannot deliver everything they promise but they can promise they can. The promise is not the outcome. Often the promise has no hope of ever becoming the outcome but politicians make them forever.

The electorate is not gullible or clueless. It is hopeful, hoping that some of the promises will be fulfilled once the politicians have attained office. Then, after a few years, the hot air drifts away with new wafts in which the voters place renewed hope. A vicious and endless circle.

Provincial Liberal leader, Bonnie Crombie, promises a hospital for Whitby or Pickering. The need for a hospital here goes without question with the growing population. Now the grain of salt: how will this new hospital be financed? Is there money for it? Is it a practical possibility? These questions need to be discussed before we jump on the band wagon, simply voting yes to what feels like comfortable hot air.

Let’s hear some details Ms. Crombie.

HEALTH: Foods that help strengthen your bone health

Nearly 2 million Canadians over 40 have osteoporosis, a condition that leads to thin, weakened bones and raises the risk of bone fractures and mobility problems. We typically start losing bone strength in our 30s, but we can often slow down the process by paying attention to what’s on our plates.

Certain ingredients, including salt and caffeine, can increase the amount of calcium we’re losing. Other foods, on the other hand, can top us up with the many nutrients our bodies depend on to maintain bone health.

  1. Kefir
Kefir, a fermented dairy drink, is rich in calcium – which plays an important role in bone maintenance. Without calcium, our bones wear out faster. And unfortunately, as we get older, we don’t absorb calcium from foods as well as we used to. Kefir peptides may actually help our bodies absorb calcium and improve bone density, as demonstrated in a 2015 experiment in Taiwan. In Canada, kefir and other milk products are fortified with vitamin D. That’s also a critical nutrient for bone-building, since it increases the amount of calcium we absorb. Another plus: the probiotics in kefir may contribute to lower cholesterol!
  2. Sardines
Canned sardines come with bones included. This makes them an excellent source of calcium. Sardines are high in protein which is absolutely necessary for repairing bone. Here’s something else about sardines that makes us smile: They contain omega-3 oils, which appear to have special benefits for bones. Fatty fish are a better protein choice than meats high in saturated fats, which can be hard on our bone health. However, make sure you choose sardines packed in water and not oil, which may leach away some of those important omega-3s.

  3. Collard greens
Magnesium, found in collard greens and other dark, leafy veggies, is another mineral essential for our bones. In fact, our risk of osteoporosis goes up when our magnesium goes low. Magnesium deficiency seems to have an impact on some of the mechanisms involved in bone building. (A very high intake of magnesium can interfere with bone health too, but you’re perfectly safe if you stick to dietary sources of this nutrient, instead of taking supplements.) When you’re eating your leafy greens, be aware that some of them, particularly spinach and beet tops, contain high amounts of oxalates, which can interfere with the amount of calcium you absorb. But just throw some low-fat cheese on your greens, and you’ll be fine! Other sources of magnesium include okra and artichokes.

  4. Bananas and plantains
Plantains and bananas are rich in potassium. Other potassium foods include sweet potatoes, oranges and tomatoes. Our bones love this mineral because it helps protect them from wear and tear. It also contributes to our electrolyte balance. That’s a good thing, since we typically eat too much salt, which can raise our blood pressure and harm our blood vessels. In addition to potassium, plantains contain magnesium and fibre. Plantains can be baked, mashed and made into pancakes, but beware of plantain chips, which often serve up salt and fat.

  5. Chickpeas
Chickpeas have been eaten for thousands of years in many parts of the world. They are high in protein, but they also have much more to offer your skeleton, including calcium, magnesium and potassium. Use canned chickpeas – or soak dried chickpeas for a few hours and drain the liquid before cooking with them – to reduce the phytates, a substance in chickpeas that can hinder your absorption of calcium. Chickpeas can reduce cholesterol, prevent blood sugar spikes, and help control overeating by making you feel full.

  6. Oranges
Oranges are high in both potassium and vitamin C. Research shows that taking in vitamin C through diet is linked with better bone density and a lower risk of osteoporosis and hip fractures. Oranges also provide us with a bit of calcium, as well as a healthy dose of a carbohydrate compound called inositol that seems to increase the amount of calcium our bones absorb, playing a role in their strength and density.

  7. Blueberries
Several studies have suggested that the polyphenols in blueberries and other berry fruits can be linked to higher bone mass, possibly because of their antioxidant properties. According to this research, eating berries may offer some protection against bone loss as we age. But the benefits aren’t limited to older people: A study at the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center found that young rats who were given blueberry powder developed more bone mass than their buddies. The polyphenols in berries seemed to boost the power of bone-building cells called osteoblasts.

EDITORIAL: “Questionable spending?” asks Councillor Lisa Robinson

There are many voters who oppose Councillor Robinson for some of her past statements and positions regarding marginalized and disregarded groups. However, the councillor does ask hard questions that probably need more discussion, debate and consideration.

Consider the $40,000 outlay on the Westshore Skate Park. Councillor Robinson opposes this expenditure. However, before joining this opposition, it may be better to ask how the City follows up any of such expenditures? Is this park used frequently? By many? Or does it sit empty and unused much of the time? Additionally, who assesses the quality of the work done and it is this assessment done? The promise in this artwork was that it had a long life. Just one year and it is beginning to show significant degradation and disintegration.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Could Councillor Robinson be ticking productively in her questioning these kind of expenditures?

_______________

The Town Hall Q&A

  1. Are developers contributing to City finance?
    – Response was unclear, but Ashe indicated the City is dealing with it;
  2. What is happening to the Frenchman’s Bay purchase bid?
    – City will be bidding again with $30 million set aside for the bid
  3. We are worrying about safety in our Community? Anything being done about it?
    – Serious ongoing concern for City
    – A 9% increase in funding given to Durham Police Regional Services
    – City aware of needs such as better lighting, more sidewalks
    – Mayor urges use of ‘Eyes on the Streets‘ programs -> DETAILS
  4. What is being done about increasing Bike Lanes?
    – Mayor urges promotion of PUBLIC TRANSIT use
    – Traffic congestion is an ongoing concern of the City
  5. Are there any plans to improve the Bridge across 401?
    – not likely to be changed in any significant way
  6. Is the city aiming at the concept of the ’15 – minute CITY’?
[The concept is that all residents have access to most needed services within 15 minutes…not clear if this is walking or driving distance]
Councillor Mara Nagy reminded people that the concept was a reality at one time years and years ago, but with modernization and development, it is a way of the past
    – Ashe emphasized that it is an ideal that reality may never attain. However, the city understands the concept as something to be kept in mind in  city development planning
  7. Can the improve the transparency of City expenditures?
    – Ashe reiterated that the City website shows the City’s expenditures and urges residents to confer with the website to learn more about City spending
  8. What is the city doing about Climate Change?
    – Ashe underlined that large and constructive policies and programs relating to the Environment are provincial and national govt responsibilities
  9. Is the City dealing with the potential Rat problem?
Rat control is a City concern, but Ashe emphasized the need for residents to contribute and do necessary property maintenance and management to reduce rats’ attraction: garbage clean-up, property sanitation, standing water elimination, etc.
  10. How is City dealing with the growth of traffic congestion?
    – Ashe emphasized that the City is very aware of the worrying traffic problems and again emphasized the city planning deals with road widening programs, such as Whites Road to Taunton Rd., promotion of public transit use;
FIRE SAFETY: Ashe emphasized that fire response is a shared responsibility. In case of a major fire, regional and other city fire departments respond cooperatively, so it is not a concern left to the local Fire Department only.
  11. What is City doing to reduce increase in HATE incidents?
    – The City is concerned about this and has programs to help educate Councillors regarding racism and bigotry;
    – The city urges that it is a social-based concern and that all residents need to consider taking on responsibility per person to support the philosophy of Diversity, Equity and Integrity within our city and society
  12. Are there any thoughts of bringing back “Politics 101”?
[ ‘Politics 101’ was a City-based program to help people learn about the Municipal government and politics. It ran for 5 weeks.]
    – Ashe endorsed the value of the past program and said the City may need to consider repeating the program at some time.
  13. When is the ‘new’ City Website scheduled for launching?
    – once again, no date is available for the launch of the newly revised City website, though repeatedly, the launch date is claimed to be Fall 2024.

______________

Town halls, as done by the Mayor and some City Councillors, are always very informative for those who attend. However, the problem, as in elections, is that no matter how much publicity, promotion and persuasion the City tries, the response is always low, 15-20%,

The City repeatedly reiterates that information about City management and processes is published on the City Website and it continually urges residents to access that. Internet access to the City website and assistance with that access are available at the public libraries.

The City Website
Repeated complaints about the complexity and obscurity of the City website have been heard. The website has improved significantly over the past few months, with improved search tool results being one example. The City needs to continue improving the site.

However, city residents are responsible for accessing the website information. They need to practice and explore the city website so they become better informed about the City.

Furthermore, again, the City repeats that a new website is in the works, launch scheduled for later in 2024.

Simplicity and Clarity of information
A significant problem with publishing City information on the website is that the presentation is too complicated and difficult to navigate. Much of the City website information is unnecessarily complicated and presented in an incomprehensible way for many. Financial information must be presented in ways more citizens can understand, not just accountants and bankers.

The city website publishers must consider the residents more when presenting material. Much of the material is too difficult for many to comprehend easily. It must be reviewed, revised, and modified so it is easier to read and understand.

Councillor shortfalls regarding local information
Too few councillors provide easily found, easily accessed information about their local constituency. The Mayor and some Councillors publish newsletters but we need more of this. Providing this material digitally online is still the best practical means of communication. Increasingly, institutions, corporations and political bodies are using digital services. Digital information is becoming the norm rather than the exception. Print material is fast becoming quaint history. It is incumbent on the populace to learn how to use digital material and accessibility to it but in that light, it is incumbent that the councillors provide more.

The Future of Town Halls
Like the proverbial horse and water drinking, these Town Halls need to continue. They are a tremendously valuable opportunity for residents to learn about their city. Perhaps the benefits of those who attend will trickle down and encourage others to attend. We may never reach the passive, less interested residents, but we must continue making the effort to engage them. We owe it to everyone to do so.

PICKERING: celebrates reopening of revitalized Waterfront Trail

Today, the City of Pickering, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), and Trans Canada Trail (TCT) were joined by community members to celebrate the reopening of Pickering’s popular Waterfront Trail at Bruce Handscomb Memorial Park.

The trail, originally constructed in the 1960s, was narrow, steep, and posed significant sightline issues, ultimately resulting in safety and accessibility concerns for the portion between the north side of Bruce Handscomb Memorial Park and Elvira Court. In recent years, the area has also faced severe erosion due to environmental conditions.

In an effort to resolve the safety issues and restore the area, the trail was closed from winter 2023 to spring 2024 for reconstruction. The revitalized space now boasts several improvements, including:

  • 120 metres of new 3-metre-wide accessible asphalt path
  • Two precast concrete retaining walls
  • Upgraded pathway lighting
  • Erosion management controls along the trail edge
  • Tactile indicator plates, aiding individuals with visual impairments in transitioning between the sidewalk and city street
  • Planting of native trees and shrubs

The total cost of the project was approximately $765,000 and included a $150,000 grant from TCT and a $31,000 contribution from TRCA.

Project costs included the new trail design, construction, restoration works, and slope stabilization/erosion repair.

Quotes:

“Pickering’s waterfront is the shimmering jewel of our city, enjoyed by thousands of residents and visitors each year. These remarkable enhancements reaffirm our collective commitment to creating accessible, safe, and vibrant outdoor spaces for generations to experience. On behalf of the City of Pickering, I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Trans Canada Trail for their generous support of these restoration efforts, safeguarding our shared outdoor spaces and enriching community well-being.”

OLYMPICS: ‘Troubled waters’ swamping the show

Water’s putting a damper on France’s show: rain, E Coli in the Sienne but the show goes on.

Rain poured down on the opening day, spoiling some of the performances, making some of them dangerous to perform but the performers, many clad in plastic ponchos, shouldered on. The more risky events like skateboarding were cancelled.

The rain also stirred up the E Coli bacteria in the Sienne, thereby having the IOC question the health risks to participant in swimming events in the river. The IOC executives are hoping the water cleaning system will improve conditions within a short period of time.

Finally, security has been very effective thus far with nothing extraordinary taking place at the competitions but beyond the borders of Paris, France’s national railroad system was derailed by vandals damaging switching controls and other vandalism. Damage was of such a level that train travel out of and into Paris was terminated for a number of days while the authorities investigated who was responsible for the terrorist activity. Repair crews got the trains running again within a couple of days.

France has budgeted £350million for security. It has proven very effective so far as security presence is seen everywhere, all the time, from police boats on the Sienne to mounted constabulary trotting in the streets of Paris. Bravo France; woe is us world!

AMERICAN DIRT, Jeanine Cummins

AMERICAN DIRT, Jeanine Cummins

Synopsis:
También de este lado hay sueños. On this side, too, there are dreams.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favourite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy — two of them her favourites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same. In fact, only Lydia and her 8-year-old son, Luca, escape the gruesome and fatal retribution meted out by the cartel against Lydia’s husband and his family.

Lydia decides to flee Acapulco as she knows the cartel will pursue the surviving members of the family.

Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia — trains that make their way north toward the United States, where they believe Javier’s reach doesn’t reach. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

Richard writes
American dirt is an opus, a tome of weightiness like a blacksmith’s anvil, heavy with prose, deep with symbolic insertions, and colloquial with Mexican phrases. These many features of the writing saturate the canvas of the prose more deeply, more colorfully. Cummins is a master craftsperson!

The book engages the reader from the opening scenes, the horrific slaughter of Lydia’s family. Lydia and Luca flee the city seeking security and safety from the cartel, el jardineros. Every page, a new scene of suspense and danger. Each chapter, a new crisis coloured with the same hues of danger and threat. Lydia and her son are in a never-ending state of fear, and constant threat fearing they are endlessly exposed to the vengeful objectives of the cartel.

Cummins’s hard work in writing the book is evident everywhere. Though she is an American, her extensive research in Mexico as preparation for writing the book is very clearly evident. Her widespread use of Mexican words, Mexican phrases and Spanish expletives add even more authenticity to her descriptive opus.

American Dirt is a never-ending roller coaster of tension and suspense, a constant ride of threats and dangers. Every reader will hold their breath as they turn the next page.

It is worth viewing the endnotes Cummins provides about her book just to see all the help she received in writing the book. Many of the people credited with assisting seem to be friends and acquaintances rather than book writing professionals. This should not detract or diminish the credit and recognition Cummins deserves for writing a masterful book. These assistants likely have put a tremendous amount of spirit and passion into their efforts as amateurs often do. But American Dirt is in no way amateurish.

American Dirt is an excellent read, page after page. Occasionally, unnecessarily prolonged in its clause after clause descriptions, unnecessary repetition to emphasize a point, may be over criticism of the book. The book remains interesting, suspenseful, and brimming with tension throughout.

EDITORIALS: JOE BIDEN

Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential campaign may be indescribably painful, maybe as painful as his family’s tragic losses. However, it should be ranked as the greatest example of humility and personal sacrifice in American history.

This man, president of the United States, holder of the most powerful political office in the world, chose to sacrifice his position for the good of his country. Such patriotism and national loyalty is incomparable anywhere.

It was Biden’s decision — his alone, even though the number of people pushing him out was increasing hourly. He held his ground and no constitutional law could remove him from office. The 25th Amendment did not apply as he had not been impeached.

Biden’s decision to withdraw was personal and his alone. He chose to do so for the good of his country, sacrificing the greatest power he could ever have personally for the sake of his nation.

Joe Biden should stand shoulder to shoulder with the greatest Presidents of the United States.

TECHNOLOGY: Here’s what the “OUTAGE” hullabaloo was all about

Ever see something like one of those blue displays on your computer?

They are known as the “Blue Screen of Death” in computer parlance, BSOD,  and they mean your computer has crashed, your computer system has stopped operating. You cannot do any computer work on your machine.

Recently, computer systems across the whole world crashed because some idiot IT person/group of software engineers, ‘Mr. Know-it-alls’ failed to test their newly created security app before releasing it to its world-wide customers. The result: computer systems crashing everywhere in the world. Hospitals, police departments, airlines, businesses, hotels chains, restaurant services, even emergency services responding to 911 in some areas. Shut down completely, no services operating. No responses to 911 calls, no police dispatching, no scheduling of surgeries, hospital life support systems shut down.

The software engineers behind this snafu should be fired on the sport with no severance packages at all. This was a first class bungle with life threatening repercussions world wide.

POLITICS: It may seem futile….but we need to continue fighting this purveyor of lies

It may seem futile and it is becoming repetitive and boring, but we must continue. Otherwise, the T**** Cult  (TC) will win.

The TC won’t stop and the more they repeat their endless lies and misinformation, more people begin to succumb to the message…either because of boredom or some by persuasion.

We will not stop speaking out against this politician.

Politicians are snakes, alligators, bears, sharks…take your pick. There is no such thing as a clean politician, just various degrees of corruption. I thought a lot of people must have holes in their heads to believe in D.J. T****, but now I know it’s true!

And by the way, did you notice Melania wasn’t even there…or was she? Better check out the crowd carefully.

Will she be there on the last night when the big T**d gives his keynote speech? Don’t be surprised if she isn’t there. After all, she’s got her prenup signed already, probably anguishing that she didn’t hold out for more.

Likely, Melania will cash in most while still married to the ‘golf pro.’ Otherwise, a divorce must mean she cashes in much less. So it’s better to remain married, cash it to the max, and never see the j**k.

What a life. It is possibly very wealthy but miserable as hell. The classic living in a gilded cage and not able to tweak about any benefits that might go along with that life.

Ohhhh misery!!!

SHORT STORY: The gringo gulch gap in Puerto Vallarta

The gap of gringo gulch

My name is Eduardo Castillo. I would like to tell you a story about old Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a sad but true story. It happened over 50 years ago. After having worked in the hospitality industry in Europe, the USA and Canada, I came back home and got my dream job as head bartender in The River Café in the heart of the city. My story begins on an incredibly humid night, where even the iguanas were sweating.

DSC_4936

The bar was hot: our band’s music pulsating out through the open windows gave passersby a free concert of the best syncopated rhythms in all of the city. No mariachi stuff, just outstanding Cuban jazz. Cuban jazz greats like Tito Puente, Hillario Duran, and Jane Bunnett would have loved jamming with our band. The café was Vallarta’s hottest night club: great music, terrific food and famous patrons too.

Then, she appeared in the bar’s entrance, a goddess clad in gauzy, sun-white gossamer. I caught my breath. So did many others.

She was stunning. Her white diaphanous dress screamed sensuality, its bodice squeezing her voluptuous breasts into pneumatic orbs that every guy in the place ogled. The narrowness of her waistline complemented her curvaceous body perfectly. She didn’t walk between the tables; she floated, an erotic visual banquet. She twirled to a bar stool with the flourish of a Spanish dancer, her skirt billowing out like that of flamenco dancer spinning to the clack of castanets. Her regal posture converted the stool into a throne.

The new monarch commanded, “Casa Noble, doble, senor. Sin hielo por favor,” a hint of an American accent. Quickly, I pulled down the vintage anejo and began polishing a clean glass in hopes of masking the trembling in my hands. I poured a generous double of the amber liquid.

“Gracias senor y su nombre?”

“Yo soy Eduardo, senorita, but I speak English.” I stuttered in reply, mesmerized by her majestic magnificence.

“Muy bien Eduardo, gracias.”

2014-09-04_12h11_17

Her beautiful face rivaled any angel’s, incredibly white alabaster skin as if sculpted from the finest Thassos marble. Plato would have written, “She is beauty.” Such beauty is not of this world. I was beyond bewitched. I was awestruck.

“De nada senorita….?” I mumbled, an intentional hesitation hoping she would respond to the verbal ploy with her name which I actually knew. I just wanted to hear her say it.

“Elizabeth. Elizabeth Taylor.” She read my hesitation correctly.

The air gasped from my lungs hearing her say her name. I knew who she was. Everyone in Vallarta knew who she was.

Elizabeth Taylor was in Vallarta because her lover, the famous Richard Burton, was filming ‘Night of the Iguana’ in nearby Mismaloya.

2014-09-04_12h07_51

Brash laughter and raucous voices preceded a group of Hollywood VIP’s as they barged their way into the bar, most of them were easily recognized because of the heavy local newspaper coverage: Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, and of course, Burton, himself.

Another man dominated the gaggling group, kind of above them, superior in some way. He shouted, “Liz, there you are! We didn’t see you in the restaurant. Did you eat already?”

She turned to acknowledge him, the light in the bar caught the marvelous colour of her eyes, not dark blue, not ebony black, but an unusual purple, a deep violet. Then she looked back at me, the force of her overpowering gaze almost knocked me over. My legs wobbled. Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.

“Eduardo, un otro por favor.”

She looked back at the man who had shouted the greeting, “John, I’ll have you know I have been here for the last hour waiting. Where have all of you been?”

2014-09-04_12h12_18

John was John Huston, the well-known director of the movie. Though his gray hair was thinning and his face grizzled with gray stubble, he still projected distinction and sophistication commanding subordination and acquiescence.

He sagged himself next to Taylor, leaned over and kissed her cheek. Burton scowled at him and shouldered himself between them.

“Don’t worry Richard. We all recognize your staked claim.”

Richard Burton, a handsome man, wavy brown hair, medium height, good physique, neither muscular nor flabby, slid his hand over Taylor’s shapely backside and kissed her with surprising gruffness.

“Hello, darling!”

“Calm yourself, Dick,” Elizabeth replied, intentionally using the nickname with its salacious innuendo.

“Were you able to film any scenes today, love?”

“Film any scenes? Shit, I could barely stand up. The damn leg hurt like hell, even after a week,” Burton responded angrily.

Huston, pointing at Taylor’s drink, nodded at me to indicate it as his order too. Then, he grumbled, “We couldn’t film a damn thing today because he could hardly move.”

“I’ll be better tomorrow, Big John. Not to worry, old boy!”

“Sure Richard,” replied Huston sarcastically.

Everyone in the bar knew how Burton had broken his ankle.

2014-09-04_12h06_34

He was renting the hacienda at Calle Zaragoza, 39, while filming Iguana. Taylor’s rented house was directly across the street. She’d come to Vallarta to keep Burton company while he was making the movie. More likely, she came to keep him out of trouble, woman trouble. Burton had a reputation as a real womanizer, flirting with every one of his leading ladies until he was successful.

At the end of each day’s shooting, Burton was chauffeured home where he began his nightly imbibing ─ copious amounts of his favourite tequila, Jose Cuervo Especial. For medicinal purposes, he claimed. “I prefer scotch but this Mexican food burns my stomach. Tequila puts out the fire.”

After a couple of hours, Burton was usually really drunk but his libido was still churning at its peak level. In this condition, he would lurch across ‘gringo gulch,’ to Taylor’s hacienda. However, there was one drawback to this advantageous location of their houses. It was the street itself.

This street, in the heart of Vallarta, discouraged traffic. It was extremely narrow and exceedingly steep. Its surface of smooth round stones was a major problem. It was ideal for durability but horrendous for pedestrians and outright dangerous for the tequila-soused Burton. If he successfully traversed it on any given night, it was by sheer good luck. On his last crossing, a rainy night, his luck gave out. The nearby hospital recognized their famous patient, diagnosed a broken ankle and put him into a walking cast. Because the pain was so excruciating even just in standing, the doctors prescribed heavy doses of painkillers. These wreaked havoc with his memory causing him to forget his lines. Without medication however, the pain was unbearable making any filming impossible to the great dismay of Huston.

The first time an accident occurred Huston found ingenious ways to continue filming. He shot scenes that did not need Burton. Production slowed but it continued.

Life in Vallarta went on as usual, slow and steady, hot and humid, just like Burton and Taylor. Each night, Burton, awash in tsunamis of tequila, staggered across the street banging on Taylor’s door.

Knock, knock! Taylor’s housekeeper, Juanita, would open the entrance a bit. Seeing who it was, she greeted him in her usual pleasant way, “Hola, Senor Burton. Como esta?”

Burton slurred a reply, “Hey Juanita, tell Lizzie, her beau’s here!” Then he’d push his way past Juanita and stumble over to Taylor’s bar where he would splash out another tequila.

“How are you doing tonight, Richard?” Taylor asked, her tone like a mother who is about to reprimand her child but wants to do it in a gentler, oblique way rather than scolding her offspring directly. Taylor was never pleased to see Burton like this, but she never chastised him for it. Maybe because she herself drank nearly as much, but seemed to tolerate it better. Maybe because she knew criticizing him would only result in his drinking even more, faster. Maybe because she simply loved him, pure and simple, no matter what condition he was in. In any case, she would walk up to him, passionately kiss him on the lips and say, “Pour one for me too, Dickie.”

Huston, a non-religious man, gave prayers of gratitude for the surprising speed with which Burton’s ankle healed, or at least enough so that Burton could stand relatively pain-free. Shooting resumed though restricted to above the waist or at best, above the knees shots because of the lower leg cast. Filming continued. So did the nightly visitations, each crossing stuttered and staggered progress, premonitions of what was to come. Still, Huston was happy. The producers were happy. Burton and Taylor were happy. Everything was right in Vallarta and I worked nightly listening to every gossipy tidbit brought in by the American film’s boisterous crewmembers. What I didn’t hear directly, I filled with my own guesswork.

Weeks later, Huston strode into my bar with a group of men who I later learned were the chief cinematographer and the film’s producers.

“John, we’re behind schedule and losing a shit load of money,” complained Ray Stark, the movie’s biggest producer.

“OK Ray, OK. But we never stopped filming,” Huston replied, defensively.

“No, true. You were smart how you overcame that ankle disaster but when he broke his fuckin’ arm…that was real shit. You couldn’t shoot around that. Scenic credibility tanked. You gotta find a way of saving this asshole from any more accidents,” continued Stark.

“What do you want me to do? Wrap him up in cotton batten?” Huston rebutted.

“How about telling Taylor to leave Vallarta?” Stark suggested.

“Are you nuts, Ray? If Taylor left, Burton would pack himself into her suitcase. Our movie would be finished. Forget that idea. It won’t happen.”

“Well, you gotta fuckin’ do something. This latest setback puts us on the brink. We’re really over budget.”

The producers were really upset this time because when Burton fell he smashed his face on the stone way, splitting open his cheek. Makeup couldn’t mask the gash.

“What do you want me to do? Buy up all the tequila in Vallarta? Hell, he’d switch to scotch. That lush would drink aftershave if he had to!” retorted Huston.

“We don’t give a shit what you do, John. He can’t have another accident.”

Huston ordered another round of drinks while Stark continued his badgering for a solution to Burton’s repetitive accidents. “Why doesn’t he just move in with her? Then, there would be no need for those damn nightly street crossings.”

“Liz refuses to let him; says she needs her space, her privacy,” replied Huston.

“What bullshit! He’s there every night as is. Hey, why not buy one of the adjoining houses?”

“We looked into it after he broke his wrist. The old lady on the east side, in her 80’s, well, she likes living beside a famous Hollywood star. She refuses to sell. The old guy on the other side won’t tell us why he won’t sell but every day, he’s out on his balcony as Liz sunbathes by her pool.”

“Well, we gotta find a solution. We just can’t have him crossing that fuckin’ street every night, smashed as hell. What are we gonna do?”

“I’ll think of something. But right now I gotta get back home. I really need to recharge my batteries because tomorrow I have to try to convince Burton to double his normal work output to make up for lost time. That’ll be a hell of a battle. I’m going over to his place right now to work on him.”

“Christ John, good luck with that. The harder he works, the more he drinks.”

The group signalled for the check and asked me to call two cabs.

“Calle Zaragoza, 39, por favor, senor,” I directed Huston’s cab driver.

When he arrived, Huston paid the cab, got out, and as he walked to the entrance of Burton’s home, he thought to himself, ‘Geez, this really is a narrow street. You can almost hold hands without leaving your own doorway. And such a lovely neighbourhood, nice houses. I can understand why Richard and Liz like living here.’

‘The only damn problem is this street with those ridiculous round stones. Simple construction, sure, lasts forever, but dreadful to walk on, especially for a drunk.’ thought Huston as he rang the doorbell.

The door opened a little. Recognizing Huston, Burton’s stocky Mexican housekeeper opened it fully and cheerily greeted him, “Hola Senor Huston. Como esta esta noche?”

“Muy bien, Consuela. Donde est senor Burton?” he asked.

Consuela extended her open hand signalling that Burton was across the street.

“Gracias, Consuela,” responded Huston. Carefully crossing the street, Huston thought to himself again, ‘Shit! What a stupid way to build a street. Even a sober person could kill themselves.’

From Taylor’s courtyard, Huston could hear loud voices coming from the center of the house.

“Blimey, look what the wind just blew in. Come on in, old man. What can I get ya?” said Burton, his tequila laced words, barely comprehensible.

“Just a Coke, Richard. I am surprised you’re still up,” adding, in an almost admonishing tone, “You know we’ll be shooting a long day tomorrow?”

“Argh, not to worry, old man. Your number one star will be ready, cock-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to rip, early as hell.”

“I sure hope so ‘cause we’re badly behind schedule and the producers are beginning to really squawk.”

“Fuck ‘em! Cheap bunch of fuckin’ Jews, always worrying about their goddamn profit.”

Huston grimaced at the racist slur, deciding it best not to respond.

“Oh don’t worry John. I was about to take him to bed anyway,” Liz said, her words much clearer than Burton’s.

“Well then, best I leave so you both can get to bed early,” replied Huston as he gulped down his Coke. “I really need some sleep myself.”

Huston turned toward the courtyard, hesitated and turned back toward the famous couple. Looking directly at Taylor, he said, “Liz, it’s crucial he get some real rest tonight because we’ve got nearly a dozen scenes to shoot tomorrow.”

Liz understood Huston’s not-so-well-hidden meaning. She put her hand behind the director’s waist and gently guided him toward the courtyard. More words weren’t needed.

Liz returned just as Richard was pouring another tequila.

“Oh no, big guy! Come on to bed. I want to feel my big guy up against me.”

“Hey baby, … I can be up against you right out here just as easily,” he garbled awkwardly pawing her generous breast. Liz moved his hand to her waist adding, “Come on darling, let’s go to bed. I’ll give you a little honey.”

In the 60’s, Vallarta was little more than an overgrown village and Mismaloya, about thirty minutes away, still an ocean side jungle with unreliable hydro, no running water and no decent accommodation for any Hollywood type. Therefore, everyone came back to Vallarta at night via either the studio bus or a local cab, invariably stopping at the favoured watering hole, The River Café.

Huston was home in minutes, bed seconds later. He was exhausted, from the day’s work and from the stress of trying to defend Burton in the discussion at the café. Burton’s boozing continued to turmoil him but his fatigue overpowered him quickly.

Just before dawn, Huston woke up with a start. “I got it. I got it. I know how I’ll solve the accidents problem. After breakfast, he stopped by Burton’s house and asked Consuela if Jesus had arrived yet.

“Si senor. Hee ees een da keechen,” she told him.

Jesus Valdez was Burton’s gardener/handyman. He was a slow moving Mexican of indeterminate age, but old for sure. Huston had concluded long ago that Valdez was worth his weight in gold because he was the one who had helped Burton many times before when an accident happened. He massaged Burton’s bruised hip after a fall, taped his thigh after another and ice packed numerous sprains and strains. Now Huston had dreamed up a solution to Burton’s accidents and he wanted to see if Valdez could help him make his idea a reality.

“Si Senor Huston. I know someone who can help us. Manuel Artega, he ees a good hombre. Eeee get job done…queek and cheap too senor.”

“How long?” asked Huston.

“I don know for sure senor, but I guess wahhn week, maybe.”

“Quicker, if possible, Jesus,” Huston replied as he thought about the production costs. A speedy solution was crucial.

“Senor, eef one has money, anything is possible een Vallarta. We weel haffa to oil some hands but wee will do it senor.”

“Good Jesus. Here, get started and make the necessary arrangements. We need this completed as quickly as possible,” added Huston as he pushed a wad of money into Valdez’ hand.

Valdez gulped the rest of his morning hot chocolate, tepid now after the discussion with Huston. No matter, his new task was more important than his usual leisurely breakfast with the buxom and personable Consuela.

“Look Manuel, Huston will likely give you a bonus if you can do it in a couple of days.”

“Two days? Impossible. I need a week at least,” insisted Manuel Artega, owner of Muros de Manuel, a construction company in Vallarta. “I have some really good men who might be able to do it. With the right money, the job could be done in three days. But no less. No way. Time is needed for setting.”

“Muy bien, amigo.”

Huston had one more issue to resolve: to convince Burton to stay with him while his solution was being carried out. He was guessing that if Burton discovered the plan, he would see it as an attack on his capabilities, maybe even his manhood. He hoped he could convince Liz to help him persuade Burton to change residences for just a few days.

“What a fantastic idea, John. Richard would never agree to it if we told him. You know how big his ego is but he’ll accept it when it’s done. I am sure of it.”

Vallarta works like most Mexican cities, almost anything is possible if there’s enough money behind it. Huston’s idea would contravene city bylaws intended to protect the historical heritage of the city. A permit for this job would be difficult but the financial ‘lubricant’ was adequate. The job began straightaway.

Artega’s eight man crew started work on both sides of the street simultaneously. Time was of the essence. Late on the third day, they applied the final coat of bright white paint. Job completed as promised and in an amazing three days.

Liz looked up at the work and said, “What a fantastic job! Nobody will complain about this possibly looking out of place. Richard will love it, I am sure.”

The next day, Huston made the announcement to the entire crew at breakfast, “Hey people, today I am going to give you all a break ‘cause you have been working so hard. We’re cutting off at noon. Go home, get some rest, relax for the day.” Everybody cheered as if it were New Year’s Eve on the Malecon. Everyone was tired. The long days and the tension of the frequent filming stoppages due to Burton’s many accidents were exhausting. Everyone understood the challenges Huston faced in dealing with his vitriolic star. Still, they were all grateful for the break.

“I thought you had producers breathing down your neck, Hustie, old boy?” Burton asked Huston.

“Yeah, well, I’ve got them under control for the moment, Richard. Tonight we’re not worrying about them. I am taking you out for dinner and Eduardo’s got a really special anejo he’s been saving just for you. But first, when we get back to town, I have something I want to show you back at your place.”

“Blimey, old chap. I love surprises.”

The cab bringing the duo back to Burton’s house turned the corner at Calle Zaragoza and Huston directed the cab driver to stop right there, “Aqui senor. Stop!”

Burton was surprised at their stopping short of his place but at Huston’s directive, he got out of the cab. As he turned toward his house, he exclaimed, “What the fu…? What is that?”

Burton looked up, his mouth agape. His house was now conjoined with Taylor’s by a beautiful covered bridge, the sun reflecting brilliantly off its gleaming white sides, the red brick trim blending it flawlessly with the Mexican styled surroundings. It looked beautiful as if it had been built as part of the original homes. It suited its surroundings perfectly.

“That my friend is your Bridge of Sighs,” said Huston, with great pride. “Liz made it especially for you. Just so you could get over to her place more quickly each night.”

It never dawned on Burton the real reason for the bridge or its real builder. Such is love!

“It looks just like a miniaturized Ponte dei Sospiri in Venice,” cooed Burton. “That Liz, she can be a real bitch, but such a romantic one.”

So there you have it. The story of Puerto Vallarta’s very own Bridge of Sighs. Sadly today, John Huston is gone, Burton and Taylor are gone, even the bridge is gone. Only the memories remain.

PICKERING: Farmer’s Market cancelled, July 16, due to deluge of rain

Many people were deeply disappointed in the cancellation of the Pickering Farmers Market due to the deluge of rain that poured on our area all morning. Mother Nature played with us by deluging in the morning, cancelling the possibility of erecting any sales tents and then shining brightly with sunshine glory in the afternoon.

Mother Nature we ain’t luvin’ ya right now. And there are large number of farmers and vendors who don’t have much to say about you right now either.

However, those of you who are passionate about purchase of fresh produce, find comfort with the many market alternatives available in our region:

HATE: Not much response from City and Councillors on issue of HATE … and it’s happening here too

Recently, we asked, “What were the Mayor and Councillors doing about hate-based incidents in our City?”

Well, it seems like they are doing nothing. That may not be true or fact, but we have not heard any response, public or otherwise, from the Mayor and his Council.

We know hate-tainted actions take place in the Council chambers, as evidenced by the anger-filled and offensive disregard for fellow Councillors that has taken place there in recent months. Angry words and insulting verbalizations are tossed into the council discussion like bacon bits on a salad. Throw it on. Disregard whether or not it is PC (politically correct).

If this attitude is prevalent in Council meetings, one wonders what endeavours, actions, or policies this council has initiated to diminish the hate or ugliness that is growing in our city and society.

We did hear from one politician who felt our commentary was noteworthy, particularly after the Trump assassination attempt. Even the words ‘assassination attempt’ send shudders through the spine.

[An aside: You won’t hear it from any news media, especially not from CNN but read Trump’s lips when he fisted the air in justifiable anger at being shot. He was shouting, “F**k you, F**k you” and not “Fight! Fight!” as claimed by some media. Trump’s not part of the Dallas Cheerleaders’ squad. No more needs to be said.]

Our society always has the malevolent haters, some of whom have taken to violent action in support of their beliefs, from Caesar to Reagan, we have had people among us who went beyond hate resorting to violence in support of their causes. Today, these responses are more volatile, and technology is ever-expanding in capabilities. Never mind guns and assault rifles. Our hates now resort to more mundane weapons of assault, trucks, vans and cars. Too bad they haven’t dumbed things down to scooters and trikes.

And what are political leaders doing about all this hatred? What are our schools doing about it? It isn’t good enough to claim we have anti-hate policies and anti-hate school programs. Not when Sandy Hook, Orlando, Florida, and the like occur so frequently and readily.

Not only do we need real action against hate in our society, but we also need public accountability to demonstrate that we are winning the battle. Statistics show a significant decrease in these incidents. We don’t need to hear platitudes and lip service. We need action and real results. But many would say we aren’t getting it. Just ask Trump or a few parents in Sany Hook.

PICKERING: City’s Animal Services receives $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada

Lots of purring and barking coming from the staff and residents of Pickering’s Animal Services. They just received a $35,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada.

Lindsey Narraway, Supervisor, Animal Services, cheered loudly about the good news, “We are immensely thankful to PetSmart Charities of Canada for their generous grant. In 2023, we cared for 427 animals at the shelter. This funding will significantly enhance our ability to provide essential care and find loving homes for even more animals, meaning more lives saved, and brighter futures ahead for the animals in our community.”

PICKERING: A question for the Mayor and Councillors regarding HATE

Mr. Mayor and Councillors,

“What are you doing about HATE and all its vestiges in our community?”

HATE and its related siblings, RACISM, AGEISM, SEXISM, ANTISEMITISM, and SPOUSAL ABUSE seem to be increasing in our society, relentlessly and ceaselessly. Not because any individual or group is at fault, but because the seeds for these things were planted somewhere before and allowed to germinate and grow, and what we may be doing about them is failing.

You may be doing something about these problems, but it isn’t working, as confirmed by what we see on the news and hear daily in the media.

It’s time to address these social problems in some constructive way and then following it up to see if we are succeeding. Councillor Town Halls confirm the existence of the problems  but they aren’t resolving them.

We need constructive, meaningful strategies to deal with these problems.

Let’s start with a municipal committee to develop working strategies to address the HATE problems our society is experiencing: “IMPROVING SOCIETY

PICKERING: There’s no justifiable reason for Councilors to accept these gifts

Each of these councillors has received ‘gifts’ of various values from corporations and developers involved with Pickering and the Durham region. Given the salaries they receive, there would seem to be no justifiable reason for their acceptance of any such gifts unless there is some quid pro quo planned. In some eyes, such gifts might be viewed as being on the edge of corruption. In days of old, unquestionably so. But some would voters say, ‘Every politician is on the take to some extent.”

Say it isn’t so, Councillors. Justify these gifts, given that your salary is in the $100K range.

“If these these gifts are not tied to anything such as contracts why do developers provide these to the mayor. Why would they bother? In the private world this is not tolerated any more.

Could it be the mayor is invited to these events to by pass the Lobbyist Registry? I’m sure when the mayor attends these events there is no discussion on current and future projects and any positioning to get the mayor to support certain requirements. Given the mayor is the only one with Dictator powers, its interesting in 2024 he’s the only one offered these gifts. Its the gifts we do not see that is a concern to me.”

I disagree with the above for different reasons. The reasoning rests on the basis that people are corrupt, period. It does not consider the facet of “responsibility” or “job principles.” I believe most politicians are responsible people who take on the job and do it. When they fail to do the job, then take them to task regardless of salary or any ‘gifts’ they accept. Incompetence or job incapability should be accountable.

As for the gifts…the problem may be that the assumption is there are strings attached to the gift. And that is their danger. I like giving gifts that are gifts of appreciation. “Thanks for doing that job so well,” nothing more, nothing less. However, I can understand that the gift may have some strings, like remembering this gift and doing me a favour again in the future. You may get another gift of appreciation. That is the problem with any gift…it may be tainted.

To eliminate any potential problem, forbid all gifts, FULL STOP.

All other government employees are not under any obligation to show us citizens the gifts and freebees they get.

I suspect its even worse there.

And developers don’t give these things out without some sort of payback. I saw this done all the time in the private sector. Not all gifts are disclosed.

Hello all, below  is an email that was sent out June 30, 2024 that shows gifts given to Pickering Mayor Kevin Ashe as posted in the Pickering.ca web site.  You will find that “Borden Ladner Gervais LLP                                    Ticket to Toronto Maple Leafs Game                         $400              May 02, 2024” gifted Kevin Ashe a ticket to the Toronto Maple Leafs game.  Consequently, today the City of Pickering released a statement concerning both the City of Pickering and Ajax regarding Elexicon Holdings.  Apparently  the same law group Borden Ladner Gervais LLP is now retained by the City of Pickering and Ajax.  Coincidence??
Below please find the link to the City of Pickering’s “joint statement” release.

POINT – COUNTERPOINT: Is there a conspiracy about Biden’s actual health?

Remember Eva PerÓn, the Argentinian First Lady of the 1940s and 50s? Well, she may have be rechanneled as Julie Biden FLOTUS.

______________________

I have had no intention of joining the multitude of Biden debate crash critics but a media piece caught my eye today and sparked some conspiracy based thinking.

The gist of the article by Jessica Reed Kraus in the ‘House Inhabit’ is that Jill Biden is the force that prevents Joe Biden from resigning from the 2024 US Presidential campaign. Worse, there is a claim in the piece that Biden is suffering from a progressive brain disease called ‘lewy body dementia.’ Some symptoms of the disease are rigid muscles, slow movement, trouble walking and tremors, all of which are visible in Joe Biden.

For the most part, Joe Biden has overcome the stutter issues of his younger days but some vestiges remain, particularly when he is fatigued or highly stressed. He spent a week at Camp David in high-level preparation for the CNN TV debate and most certainly, the debate would have been a high-stress situation.

In any case, Kraus theorizes that Jill Biden does not want to give up the limelight and celebrity status she has as First Lady. Hence, she insists her husband stay in the race for the Presidency so she can continue in her role as the wife of the American President.

All this is gossip-mongering, but unfortunately, there is irrefutable visible evidence to corroborate these claims. Based on the debate broadcast, Biden is definitely experiencing physical difficulties and his debate performance does suggest the man is aged.

I dislike reading such a column as it borders on gossip. However, a little bit of research uncovered many stories from many experts and professionals who have dealt with Biden or do so now. Some of the medical experts have even been named.

It is a sad state of affairs for the US, a nation of more than 300 million people, that they cannot find two better nominees for the Presidential office than a convicted felon who cannot cobble two sentences without one of them being a lie versus an aged man who stumbles, cannot walk unsupported and who displays evidence of questionable mental capacities. An unprecedented and historical election for the US, for certain.

The APPEAL, John Grisham

The APPEAL, John Grisham

Synopsis
John Grisham is now an institution — a writer whose bestselling status is assured, So assured, in fact, that expectations for each new book are as high as can be imagined. Does The Appeal make the grade? And will it appeal to Grisham admirers — or disappoint them?

The stakes in the novel’s plot are high: corporate crime on the largest scale. The duo of lawyers at the centre of the narrative are Mary and Wes Grace, who succeed in a multimillion-dollar case against a chemical company, who have polluted a town with dumped toxic waste. A slew of agonizing deaths have followed this, but lawyers for the chemical company appeal, and a variety of legal shenanigans are employed — and it is certainly not clear which way the scales of justice will be finally balanced.

As ever with Grisham, the mechanics of plotting are key, and the characterization is functional rather than detailed. But it is (as always) more than capable of keeping the reader totally engaged. Given John Grisham’s much-publicized conversion to born-again Christianity, it’s intriguing to note here the implicit criticism of the moral majority’s religious values, but that is hardly central to the enterprise. What counts is the storytelling, and while the writing is as straightforward and uncomplicated as ever, few readers will put down The Appeal once they have allowed it to exert its grip on upon them. —Barry Forshaw

Richard says
Reading a Grisham book is always worthwhile. Sometimes it is very entertaining; other times it is a ‘can’t put it down’ book; most times it is very engaging; and some times it should only be read as an excellent tool for honing one’s skills as a writer.

The APPEAL is a writer’s tutorial on writing. It is a polished story that develops logically and expectantly. Defendants win a case against a large corporation. An appeal is expected. Then the machinations begin and that is where the plot goes explaining the various endeavours relating to the next trial. It’s an interesting read if you like legal themed books or if you are writer and want to see a pro develop and refine a story.

Otherwise, this book is a  pass.

HEALTH: The Longevity Menu: 9 Foods for a Long Life

The Longevity Menu: 9 Foods for a Long Life
LISA BENDALL

Superfoods

Dark green leafy vegetables protect your bones and eyesight, and are full of cancer-fighting compounds. Photo: Westend/Getty Images

These fave foods are proven to fight disease, promote cardiovascular health – and potentially add years to your life. Of course, it’s important to have variety and balance, but certain choices are meant to be on the menu more often. Here, nine foods to help you live longer and better.

1. Olive Oil
Several studies have linked this versatile oil — the cornerstone of the oft-touted Mediterranean diet — to longevity. Olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats and is known to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. It may also offer some protection from Alzheimer’s disease. Gimme some skin If you’re going to live long, might as well have great skin! Olive oil can be applied as a moisturizer. Choose good-quality extra-virgin oil and use it sparingly.

2. Berries
All fruits are good for us. But intensely coloured berries in particular have a lot going for them: they are high in flavoids, known antioxidants. The anthocyanin pigments that provide their intense colour have a number of disease-protective properties. And you can eat their skins, in which healthy compounds are more concentrated, Berries have been shown to reduce high blood pressure and the risk of heart attack. Tip: Go outside the berry box and explore exotic berries like goji and acai.

3. Salmon
Eating salmon appears to reduce heart failure, as long as it’s served healthfully – baked, not fried. Salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, an essential nutrient that we can only get from diet. It’s key in lowering inflammation in the body. Other top finned friends: mackerel and bluefish. You can take a fish out of water, but you can’t take the oil out of the fish Research has shown that fish oil supplements don’t provide the same protection against heart failure as eating actual fish.

4. Whole Grain Fibre
In a study that tracked more than 300,000 men and women over the age of 50, those who had the highest amount of fibre in their diets, especially from whole grains, were the least likely to die over the years that followed. (The same study revealed that they kept their looks longer, too!) Whole grains are known to help the heart, fight cancer and help ward off diabetes. You don’t need a whole lot Try a variety of whole grains like oatmeal, millet, brown rice, teff and amaranth.

5. Dark Chocolate
Does it still count as a superfood if it tastes like a supertreat? The cacao tree originally grew in Central and South America, and its beans were used as money. Research has linked consumption of cocoa to liver and cardiovascular health and mental fitness. Heart of darkness Take it dark (at least 65 per cent cocoa) if you want all the benefits. Milk chocolate and white chocolate don’t contain as many flavonols (antioxidants), plus they may be high in fat and sugar.

6. Nuts
Nuts such as walnuts, almonds and pecans are known to improve your cholesterol levels and may help to protect against blood clots and heart attack. Research shows they can also control your blood sugar, curb your appetite and help you manage your weight. In a study of more than 100,000 men and women, the results showed that those who regularly ate nuts lived longer and healthier lives. Go natural. It’s a whole lot healthier to eat nuts without those sugary or salty coatings.

7. Greens
Yesterday it was spinach, today it’s kale, but it’s all good. Dark green leafy vegetables (other top choices are collards and turnip greens) are high in vitamins, magnesium, calcium and cancer-fighting compounds. They protect your bones and eyesight, and may contribute to a high-quality old age. What a bargain.  Greens are high in fibre but low in calories, so they make you full without making you fat.

8. Legumes
Studies show that a diet high in legumes (beans, lentils and chickpeas) appears to prevent coronary heart disease and improve blood sugar. An Australian study of seniors in four countries found they all had something in common: those who ate the most legumes were most likely to be alive seven years later. Are they nuts? Well, no. Peanuts are actually legumes. But in a 2013 study showing that people who eat nuts daily live longer, the peanut was one of the “nuts” studied. Another legume for longevity!

9. Yogurt
We like yogurt because it gives us all the vitamin, mineral and calcium benefits of a dairy product. But it also contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, a friendly bacteria that can wipe out disease-causing micro-organisms in our bodies. Yogurt is used to treat everything from high cholesterol to Type 2 diabetes to intestinal disorders. Eating yogurt appears to strengthen the immune system.

For the most health potential, pick low-fat plain yogurt with five grams of protein or more per serving.

APOLLO MURDERS, Chris Hadfield

APOLLO MURDERS, Chris Hadfield

Canadian astronaut, Chris Hadfield, soars as a writer too.

Synopsis
1973: a final, top-secret mission to the Moon. Three astronauts in a tiny spaceship, a quarter million miles from home. A quarter million miles from help.

NASA is about to launch Apollo 18. While the mission has been billed as a scientific one, flight controller Kazimieras “Kaz” Zemeckis knows there is a darker objective. Intelligence has discovered a secret Soviet space station spying on America, and Apollo 18 may be the only chance to stop it.

But even as Kaz races to keep the NASA crew one step ahead of their Russian rivals, a deadly accident reveals that not everyone involved is quite who they were thought to be. With political stakes stretched to the breaking point, the White House and the Kremlin can only watch as their astronauts collide on the lunar surface, far beyond the reach of law or rescue.

Full of the fascinating technical detail that fans of The Martian loved, and reminiscent of the thrilling claustrophobia, twists, and tension of The Hunt for Red October, The Apollo Murders is a high-stakes thriller unlike any other. Chris Hadfield captures the fierce G-forces of launch, the frozen loneliness of space, and the fear of holding on to the outside of a spacecraft orbiting the Earth at 17,000 miles per hour as only someone who has experienced all of these things in real life can.

Strap in and count down for the ride of a lifetime.

Richard says
This man is amazing. Test pilot, astronaut, space flights consultant to NASA, composer, musician and now add author to the list.

The writing snaps. The authenticity everywhere. The plot plausible. The entertainment first rate.

In short, Hadfield’s debut novel will surprise any reader with its polish, refinement and engagement from the first page to the climactic ending.

A great story is written in a style that is captivating and entertaining.

I would say it is unreservedly excellent but for one thing. Readers may be confused, puzzled or lost when with the descriptive detail. Try to read for sentences or multiple sentences rather than single words in order to comprehend the action. Read as if you were riding a rocket and the story will fly much better.

AUTO: Take as many precautions as you can to protect your vehicle

car theftPREVENTIVE MEASURES AND TIPS FOR CONSUMERS

Consumers can make simple adjustments to safeguard their vehicles. CAA Insurance recommends the following preventive measures for consumers:

AUTO THEFT
Hide your keys rather than hang them by the garage entrance door.
Park your car inside the garage rather than in the driveway.

AUTO SECURITY and SAFETY
Glance into the back of your car before getting in to confirm it is empty.
Warm your car up by driving in it, not letting it run independently.
Lock your care whenever you park it, even in the driveway.

  • Secure your parked vehicle with a steering-wheel lock, brake pedal lock, or wheel lock, such as “The Club” to secure your parked vehicle.
  • Secure your car key fob by storing it in a Faraday box or pouch to prevent signal hacking.
  • Consider a professionally installed after-market immobilizer.
  • Lock your doors (both car and home) and park your vehicle inside if you have a garage.
  • Enable or install multi-factor authentication capabilities in your vehicle.
  • If you own more than one vehicle, it’s recommended to park the less valuable one nearer to the street.
  • Install motion sensors and a camera on your driveway to capture any activity.
  • Cover the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) so it’s not visible on the dashboard.
  • Store a GPS tracker to track your vehicle should it be stolen.
  • Ensure items are out of sight, and do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
  • Always avoid leaving your vehicle unattended while it is running.
  • Report any suspicious activity to police and avoid confrontations with thieves.

EDITORIAL: Government failing the citizenry needing the most help

Sheeple?

It’s incredible how we accept and tolerate incompetent government at every level from dysfunctional municipal councils to indecisively dysfunctional provincial governments to questionably competent federal politicians gorging themselves as the public trough.

What are these elected officials doing?

Immigration is a seriously negative impact on every region of the nation. We are unable to provide these people with the necessities of life: shelter and food. So they turn to tents and canvas encampments and food banks or charity handouts. Our own citizenry fends as poorly with insufficient income, need for shelter, and anxiety as to the source of their next meal. Government officials were elected to solve these problems. They are failing on every count. Homeless numbers are on the rise; use of food banks is increasing; mentally challenged need professional assistance. And where are our politicians? Squabbling and bickering at Council meetings, offering us alcohol at confectionary stores, offering to sell lottery tickets at beer stores!  These are solutions? Heaven help us if these politicians see these initiatives as solutions to the growing number of problems we are facing.

Cut them some slack? Why? The problems are getting worse. They’re the governing leaders. Their job is to tackle and resolve the problems. Ask yourself, “Is life getting better in you city? Your province? Your country?” If it isn’t, who is at fault? Where is the problem really? We pay our taxes without fail. We pay for our food purchases. We work daily, if we have a job. And in return, we get governing officials who bicker with one another, government leaders who offer platitudes like “let them eat cake (drink beer)…) and others who worry about their alarming descent in the polls prior to another election.

Something is amiss here but so what !

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: “I pay exorbitant property taxes for this questionably dysfunctioning City Council?”

I watched the recent Council meeting of June 10 and the longer I watched the more uncomfortable I became. These are adults? These are professionals in their business professions? These are elected politicians?

I voted for some of these characters. If there were a plebiscite to remove them, I would not hesitate for one second. [ Thank goodness there is no such means to remove incalcitrant, non-functioning council members in this way as some of these Councillors would be gone in the flash of a ballot. ]

Is each of these Council members aware of the meaning of respect? Do they know human dignity and acknowledgement of same? There are anger issues here and attending an anger management workshop would benefit a number of these politicians.

I cannot stop paying my taxes which seem to be becoming exorbitant but if I could, I would stop paying them, not because they seem to be growing incredibly without  acceptable justification or logical rationale. I would stop paying them so these boobs serving as our Councillors would not receive salaries for what they do.

Boobs, incredible non-functioning boobs who let anger cloud their actions, let their emotions control their decisions. Boobs too, for sitting back without comment or criticism of what is occurring. Maybe I am one of the ignorant masses but I have the vote and I will put it to good use as soon as I can. I want this batch of bungling, fumbling fools removed. These kinds of politicians do not deserve to hold office.

Shame on the bunch of these bungling incompetents.

BOOKS: New release by Rick Pyves

After 5 years of researching, editing and writing I have just published my 5th book – On With The Show. This story provides insights into the great depression in Canada from 1929 – 1939 as backdrop to my maternal grandfather Bert Eason’s efforts to raise money for the unemployed and needy. He performed in over 250 shows/concerts in Montreal. Bert was a singer, pianist, comedian and master of ceremonies. Bert, along with his fellow artists gave their all, as the federal, provincial and municipal governments were tragically overwhelmed with an economic tsunami both in Canada and globally. The book is available on Amazon as both an eBook and Trade Book at https://www.amazon.ca/Show-Singer-Comedian-During-Depression/dp/1777992583/

Vive les dames !

Claudia Sheinbaum, known as “la Doctora” for her academic achievements, has made history by becoming the first woman and the first Jewish person elected as President of Mexico. She won approximately 60% of the vote in the largest election in Mexico’s history, succeeding President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her longtime ally. Sheinbaum, a physicist with a doctorate in energy engineering, has a notable background, including being part of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning United Nations climate panel.

Born in Mexico City in 1962 to Holocaust survivor grandparents, Sheinbaum has a long history of public service and academic excellence. She studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of California, Berkeley, before entering politics in 2000 as Mexico City’s environment secretary. She later served as the head of the Tlalpan district and then as the mayor of Mexico City.

Sheinbaum faces significant challenges, including addressing Mexico’s high homicide and femicide rates and organized crime. Her approach is expected to differ from Obrador’s, focusing more on data-driven decisions. The transition in leadership also comes at a critical time for US-Mexico relations, particularly concerning immigration and border security.

Sheinbaum’s election marks a significant cultural shift in Mexico, a predominantly Catholic country with a patriarchal society. Her administration will need to balance continuity with Obrador’s policies and introduce her own initiatives to address the country’s pressing issues.

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Councillor Robinson raises significant considerations

Councillor Lisa Robinson raises serious questions about Mayor Ashe letter to Minister of Legislative Affairs Paul Calandra.

There are many serious points Councillor Robinson raises such as

  • full Council debate about the issues concerned,
  • the impact Mayor Ashe’s decision will have on the regional environment and
  • the questionable use of ‘Mayoral superpower

_____________

Councillor Lisa Robinson’s Official Statement In Response To Mayor Ashe’s recent email to Minister Calandra to revoke O, Reg.102/72

May 31, 2024

As a councillor committed to representing the best interests of Pickering, I am deeply troubled by Mayor Ashe’s recent email to Minister Calandra, wherein he invokes his strong mayor powers to bypass the council’s input on significant decisions affecting our community. The unilateral approach not only undermines democratic principles but also poses substantial risks to our environment and local governance.

Mayor Ashe’s decision to utilize strong mayor powers to advance amendments to the Municipal Act and related regulations without meaningful council involvement is a concerning departure from the collaborative decision-making process that our community expects and deserves. The concentration of power in a single individual is detrimental to the democratic foundation of our municipal government, effectively silencing the diverse voices and perspectives of the elected councillors who represent Pickering’s residents.

The request to revoke O. Reg 102/72 and push forward with the development of Northeast Pickering, as outlined in the letter, raises several red flags. While addressing the housing crisis is crucial, it must not come at the expense of thorough environmental assessments and sustainable development practices. The potential environmental impact of such large-scale development cannot be overlooked. Rapid, unchecked development could lead to significant ecological damage, harm to farming and agriculture, increased pollution, and the loss of green spaces that are vital for the well-being of our community and its habitats.

Furthermore, the exclusion of councillors from these critical discussions prevents a comprehensive evaluation of the long-term implications for Pickering. Our community deserves a transparent, inclusive decision-making process that considers the environmental, social, and economic impacts of development projects. By sidelining the council, Mayor Ashe is not only disregarding our input as elected representatives but also the voices of the residents we serve.

The environmental sustainability of Pickering is at stake. The push to keep Northeast Pickering within the Urban Area Boundary without adequate environmental scrutiny and public consultation could lead to irreversible harm. Protecting our natural habitats and ensuring responsible land use planning is paramount to maintaining the quality of life in Pickering. Decisions of this magnitude require robust debate, diverse perspectives, and a commitment to preserving our environment for future generations.

In conclusion, while the goal of addressing the housing crisis is important, it must be pursued through democratic and environmentally responsible means. I urge Mayor Ashe to reconsider his approach, engage with the council, and ensure that the development of Pickering is both sustainable and reflective of the collective will of its residents.

Councillor Lisa Robinson

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: Community at fault, not Council

It may be easy to fault the City Council for poor communication with its residents. After all, finding information on the City website is horrendously challenging, the councillors do not send out concise, informative newsletters, no  regular communication system between Council and citizens exists. So the Council deserves criticism at this communication shortfall.

However, pointing the finger of blame solely at the Council is a big mistake. Residents also deserve blame for not being active recipients of information when it is offered in some way. The Mayor and some of the Councillors hold Town Halls, so poorly attended by the public, one can feel the frustration of the Mayor and Councillors at the poor attendance at these events. Calling it citizen apathy may be overstating it, but there is some validity to the application of that label to the citizens. Voter turnout numbers confirm citizen disinterest in municipal affairs. Of course, voters have other responsibilities in their lives but voting should be a planned priority and inexcusable for not voting given all the means by which a citizen can vote.

Voter turnout at town halls demonstrates the level of priority given to municipal affairs among the residents. Again, personal responsibilities can be planned and rescheduled for the hour or two needed for the Town Hall.

This Council – Community communication interaction is a two sided coin with both sides seriously at fault for its failure. Council can easily solve their end of the process. There are numerous easy and practical solutions to their communication inadequacies.

The other side of the coin, community disinterest is much more difficult to resolve. How does one prod citizenry into taking an interest how their City is governed? How do you persuade citizenry to become actively involved in policy development as offered by the City regularly? How do you convince residents that it is in their own best interest to take an hour and get involved in policy development in their own City?

The blame for poor communication between citizens and Council is two sided but the bulk of the blame falls on the residents more than the Council. Council has some communication processes in place, inferior as they may be but there is no excuse for the lack of active participation in municipal affairs for residents.

Drop the TV remote for an evening and get involved in your City government may be a justifiable clarion call to the City’s residents.

What do you think? [ Comments can be made in the REPLY BOX at the bottom of the post. ]
