Crimson Inflorescence

Art in Pickering’s Esplanade Park
The City of Pickering unveiled a commemorative display in its Esplanade Park. “Crimson Inflorescence,” created by Vancouver artist, Linfeng Zhou, as inspired by Dr. John McCraie’s famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields.’

Though the art is worth seeing in the daytime, it is even more engaging after dark when the acrylic poppies emit a ‘mesmerizing glow.’
Zhou wanted to honour the fallen soldiers, as remembered in McCrae’s poem, and he dedicated his art piece to fostering hope for peace and prosperity.
The work was funded by money from the City’s public art reserve, was endorsed by the Pickering Council and had the local Branch 606 of the Royal Canadian Legion consult about the suitability of the design and materials used.
The design of the art is intriguing and strongly engaging in its simplicity and creativity. The park’s streetlamp posts become stems for the iconic poppies basking in a haunting glow after dark, prompting reflection of sacrifice, memory, and gratitude. An incredibly poignant tribute and memorial honouring the memory of the fallen and celebrating cherished Canadian traditions.
