HEALTH: Trouble sleeping through the entire night often?

Troubled sleep?
[This is a 7 min read but if you have sleep problems, it is a worthwhile read.]

Sleep maintenance insomnia happens when you can’t stay asleep. It may be caused
by health conditions, such as illness, some medications, or stress.

The infuriation of interrupted sleep
You wake up — who knows why — and immediately stress about how cruddy
you’re going to feel the next day if you can’t fall back asleep fast enough.
Having just one episode is bad enough, but if it keeps happening, you’ll probably
want to figure out why and what to do about your insomnia. Yes, not being able to
stay asleep is actually a type of insomnia, and various factors, from your lifestyle
to an underlying condition, could be to blame.

Maintenance insomnia?
Insomnia is commonly thought of as simply staying up all night and not being able
to get to sleep, but that’s just one type of insomnia.
Being unable to stay asleep is a type of insomnia, too. It’s referred to as
maintenance insomnia, sleep maintenance insomnia, and, sometimes, middle-of-
the-night insomnia.
If you can’t stay asleep at least three nights per week for three months or longer,
your insomnia is considered chronic.

Why you can’t stay asleep
Here are some of the most common causes why you may struggle to stay asleep.

Stress
Stress is one of the most common reasons for insomnia. The cause of stress can be
all kinds of things, from lifestyle to medical conditions.
The real kicker with maintenance insomnia is that stress from not being able to
stay asleep can keep the cycle going, making your insomnia worse and leaving you
feeling pretty lousy.

Sleep apnea, asthma, or other breathing problems
Respiratory disturbances at night are common if you have asthma, sleep apnea, or
any other breathing problem, like allergies or even a cold.
If anything disrupts your breathing, even just for a second, it can wake you up and
make it hard to fall back asleep.

Pain
With some conditions, like fibromyalgia and arthritis, pain can flare up at night and wake you up.
If you have an injury or pain that’s worse with movement, turning over can hurt
and wake you up, too.

Illness
There are several illnesses associated with sleep issues. While not an exhaustive
list by any stretch, some common ones include:

neurological conditions, like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s
cardiovascular conditions
diabetes
other sleep disorders, like restless leg syndrome
Mental health disorders like depression or schizophrenia

Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep is a common side effect of mental health
conditions, like anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. On the flip side, poor sleep
can also worsen symptoms of these conditions.

Certain medications
Some over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications can cause side effects
that wake you up at night, like excitability, frequent urination, and vivid dreams.
These are some possible culprits:
diuretics
cold and allergy medications
corticosteroids
anticonvulsants
antidepressants
beta agonists
External issues, like worries about work or your social life.

Got stuff on your mind?
Worries about things like work or relationships can impact a full night’s sleep. You
can even experience nocturnal panic attacks if you’re under a lot of stress or
feeling anxious.

Hot flashes or hormone fluctuations
While anyone can experience hormone fluctuations that can mess with sleep,
women are more prone to hormone-induced sleep issues because they may
experience fluctuations during periods, pregnancy, perimenopause, and
menopause.
Hormone fluctuations can trigger sleep-disrupting symptoms like anxiety, hot
flashes, and night sweats.

Acid reflux
There’s nothing quite like stomach acid and other contents making their way up
into your esophagus and mouth to wake you up.
Lying flat can make acid reflux worse and even lead to choking.

Jet lag
Jet lag happens when there’s a mismatch between your circadian rhythm and the
time of day.
While your body’s clock is still anchored to another time zone, you can have
trouble falling asleep and staying asleep.

Poor sleep environment
Yep, your environment could be to blame for your inability to sleep through the
night.
As comfy and cozy as your bed may be, environmental factors, like bright lights
outside your bedroom window, street noise, or the incessant humming of an air
conditioner can wake you up throughout the night.

Blue light
Like to scroll your social feeds in bed? Your screen time and exposure to blue light
could be the reason why you can’t stay asleep.Blue light suppresses melatonin secretion, affecting sleep. It can also increase
alertness, which is the last thing you need when it’s time for sleep.

Age
As we age, our sleep patterns change. Nighttime arousal, shorter periods of deep
sleep and fragmented sleep has become very common for older adults.
The risk for chronic conditions also increases with age, adding to the stress that
makes it even harder to stay asleep.

How to stay asleep
Here are some common suggestions for making sure your sleep is restful.

Relax
No duh, right? Relaxation may be hard to come by when you’ve got a lot on
your mind and are stressed about your sleep issues to boot.

Here are some relaxation techniques that can help:
meditation
yoga
deep breathing

Talk with your doctor about your medication
If you’re taking meds, ask your doctor if insomnia is a known side effect.
They may recommend taking your medication at a different time or swapping it out for another one that won’t interfere with sleep.

Give yourself a bedtime
Strict bedtimes work for toddlers and can work for you, too. Aim to go to bed
around the same time every night so you can get your body used to sleeping at that
time. This bedtime consistency is all part of practicing good sleep hygiene.

Avoid caffeine later in the day
Caffeine later in the day could sabotage a good night’s sleep. In fact, research
suggests stopping your coffee intake 8-9 hours before your bedtime.

Here are some common caffeinated beverages to avoid:
coffee
black tea
energy drinks
soda
Avoid alcohol

You might find that alcohol helps you unwind and can make you drowsy enough to
fall asleep. But it won’t help you stay asleep.

Avoid smoking
A systematic review concluded that people who are cigarette smokers are
significantly more likely to experience sleep disturbance.

Exercise, just not before bedtime
Exercise can improve your sleep and reduce stress and anxiety that can be messing
with your slumber. Just don’t do it too close to bedtime, or you’ll risk perking yourself up when you should be winding down.

Don’t eat or drink before bedtime
Limit eating or drinking 3 hoursTrusted Source before going to sleep.
Going to bed on a full stomach can interfere with sleep and cause nocturnal
heartburn and reflux. Drinking too much or drinking too close to bedtime will
make you more likely to have to get up to pee.

Limit blue light exposure
This means no screen time 2 to 3 hours before bedtime. Swapping out a nightlight
for a red bulb and investing in some room-darkening curtains can also help.

Improve your sleep environment
Keeping your room at a comfortable temperature or investing in earplugs, a good
mattress, and bedding can all contribute to a full night’s sleep.

Don’t nap during the day
Napping can feel oh-so-good on a lazy afternoon, but even a short nap can prevent
you from staying asleep all night. If you really want to lie down during the day, make it earlier in the day and keep it under 20 minutes.

Change your sheets weekly
Dirty sheets can trigger or worsen symptoms if you have allergies or asthma.
Change your sheets weekly to prevent a stuffy nose and other sleep-busting
symptoms.

There are many reasons why you might not be able to stay asleep. There are many
lifestyle changes and sleep hygiene practices you can implement to improve your
sleep quality.
If you are still having trouble staying asleep, consider talking with a healthcare
professional to understand the underlying cause of your sleep challenges and
explore treatment options.

Seven teens charged in Vaughan home invasion

ALIYAH MARKO
STAFF REPORTER

A violent, targeted home invasion in Vaughan that was underway when police arrived, with suspects inside the residence and some waiting in stolen vehicles, has resulted in the arrests of seven teens, including a 13-year-old.

York Regional Police said a victim suffered serious injuries in the Friday night attack and was treated at the hospital. An eighth suspect in handcuffs escaped and is wanted. Three of the seven arrested were in breach of their bail conditions, including two young offenders. Officers on the ground and in a helicopter responded to a home invasion shortly after 9 p.m. in the Ventura Way and Beverley Glen Boulevard area. Police believe it was a targeted robbery.

Police said in a news release Saturday the suspects in the stolen vehicles tried to flee but crashed into police vehicles and then ran. Officers caught four and took them into custody. One handcuffed male escaped. Three were arrested inside the residence. The seven teens face more than 40 charges in connection with the home invasion.

Two 18-year-old males face 13 charges, including assault with a weapon, robbery with a firearm, and disguise with intent. One was charged with failing to comply with a release order.

Four 17-year-old males face 26 charges, including robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, and assault with a firearm. One was charged with failing to comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act

A 13-year-old male also faces eight charges, including robbery with a firearm, disguise with intent, and assault with a weapon. He is also charged with failing to comply with a release order.

“This is another example of offenders being out on bail while committing serious criminal offences in our communities,” said Chief Jim MacSween. “The safety of our communities and the wellbeing of our officers requires a bail system that addresses repeat violent offenders effectively while upholding public trust.”

SHORT STORY: ANGELS ON ASSIGNMENT

Angels on assignment

“I called you two here as it’s time for Tabitha to get her ‘permanents’ and in order to do so, she must complete her earthly challenge of two nights without any major complaints. Is that clear, Gus?” asked St. Michael, addressing the angel Gustavus by his more commonly used name.

Gus, looking forlorn and downfaced, looked up at the archangel and nodded his head in acknowledgement. He understood. ‘Permanents’ meant elevation to permanent status as an angel, a promotion from the lower angelic rank of ‘probationary.’ Both angels recognized the promotion was the goal of every probationary angel, and Michael, the keeper of angelic records, thought about the many others who had completed the assigned challenges to earn their ‘permanents.’

Gus had his work cut out for him with Tabitha.

Tabby, as she was affectionately nicknamed, had received her probationary wings more than two hundred years ago at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, where she whispered ‘words of life’ into the ears of soldiers who’d given up hope of living. But now, Tabby was struggling in her efforts to reach the next angelic level, permanent wings.

Gus got ‘permanents’ when William the Conqueror reformed the British nobility with the Domesday Book. Gus had been the voice of inspiration for William’s historical notch of liberalization to the English society. For that, he received his ‘permanents,’ but since then, he had not received a promotion to the next angelic level, archangel status, and more than a thousand years later he was still working toward that goal. Tabby would be his chance to move up the angelic ladder.

But Tabby was a challenge. She was as good-hearted an angel as any angel could be. She loved fully and unconditionally, but she had one little flaw: she just couldn’t help but complain a little about anything she encountered. “God could have done it in six days, you know if He hadn’t taken time off to rest. Noah should have swatted those two pesky mosquitos. Eve should have tried the bananas first. Besides, I don’t like snakes.”

Tabby was going to be Gus’ big challenge. Could Gus get Tabby to bite her tongue, button her lip, and accept things as they were, or, better yet, find the bright side of everything? Tabby just couldn’t resist criticizing anything she saw, heard, or experienced. No angel worth her value to the heavenly congregations could be a complainer, thought Michael. Gus feared this assignment; as he saw it, it was a miracle in the making if he succeeded.

Then, Michael asked, “OK Gus, you ready? How about you, Tabby? Lips sealed, heart open?” The earthbound duo nodded their heads in assent and poof, there they were trudging through the snow of Toronto, Canada, along Bayview Avenue near the Bridle Path to be more exact. The homes here were among the most opulent and lavish in all of Toronto. Drake had a home here. So did Conrad Black, Lord Black of Crossharbour. Galen Weston, of the Loblaw dynasty, recently sold his mansion there.

“Heavens, it’s really snowing, Gus,” lamented Tabby.

“Tabby, have you forgotten that quickly? No whining, no complaining. It’s a great winter’s night here in Canada’s biggest city. It’s a beautiful night, crispy cold, frosty fresh. Nice, isn’t it!”

“Well, we could have drawn a better assignment, someplace like Miami, or Havana or even somewhere in Mexico where it’s warmer, sunnier and a lot more inviting than here in wintery Canada.”

Gus simply shook his head, recognizing how tough this assignment was going to be.

“And another thing, I don’t know why we have to lose so much of our angelic power. We can’t fly. We have to eat. We feel the cold. Luckily, we still have our telepathic communication capability; much good that does us. All we can do is talk to each other. And only one angelic superpower act permitted for each of us. This is one darn hard assignment if you ask me.”

Gus bit his lip in angelic restraint.

The agenda the duo had drawn was to spend two winter nights in Toronto with two financially different families, one very rich, the other very poor. They were to spend one night at each family’s home without criticism or complaint about the family or how they lived. For Gus, it was no challenge, but for Tabby, who always saw something to complain about in everything, it was an enormous challenge.

This was night number one.

Gus and Tabby turned onto the Bridle Path just past the Black’s mansion. Black had been declared persona non grata in the heavenly books because he had cooked his own company books. The angelic twosome gave Black’s home a pass. Soon, they were in front of another huge mansion that belonged to a very well-known Austrian auto parts manufacturing magnate, an old man now in his early eighties who was still very ornery to everyone. Gus pointed at Frank Stronach’s house, “Here we are Tab’. And remember, no comments about his recent legal problems. Let’s go.”

The mansion belonged to the incredibly wealthy Stronach family, among the richest in Toronto, maybe even North America. Stronach had earned his wealth through the manufacture of car parts and through astute IPO investments during the downturn of the economy in the 1970s. Stronach made a huge fortune gouging competitors and short-selling on the stock market. He even had Belinda, his daughter, working beaus to gain financial information to increase the family profit. But Stronach was miserable, one of the meanest and most brutal tycoons in Canada, and this orneriest of all the big-time magnates still lived on the Bridle Path. Everyone thought when his daughter, Belinda, grew up, she might mellow the old coot. They erred; Frank remained as crotchety an ogre as ever. Wealth just made him angrier as he greedily pursued more money. One might think wealth would moderate his temperament. It did not. Nothing did. He was an ogre, through and through.

The two angels approached the huge double doors of the enormous and elegant mansion. Tabby rang the bell. Within moments, a butler answered.

“Yes,” he queried.

“Hello. We need shelter for the night. As you can see, this is a very cold, wintry night. Can you accommodate us?” Gus asked.

“Wait there,” replied the butler. He turned and walked back across the huge atrium toward the central part of the house.

Tabby couldn’t help himself and, in a low voice, said, “I know it isn’t charitable to say this, but if the butler is any indication, this family likely is a miserable bunch. Look at the kind of night it is, and he leaves us out here, standing out here in the cold.”

The two angels waited outside, shivering just as if they were human.

The door re-opened. The butler declared, “The master says he doesn’t do accommodation for strangers. Please leave the property.”

Tabby was shocked. Gus was dismayed, but he had an agenda to complete, so he insisted, “Please, sir, just a space for two tired and hungry travellers to lay their heads for one night.”

The butler again closed the door. Gus bowed his head as if in prayer. Tabby shook his. A few minutes later, the butler opened the door wide and beckoned the two angels inside with a crooked finger. He led them down a long hallway and opened a door leading to a set of steep stairs descending to the mansion’s basement. Again, down another long hallway. The trio walked on and on until they finally reached a flat grey-painted door. “You can stay here for the night, but the master wants you out early tomorrow morning.”

Gus thanked the butler and nodded in agreement to the demand. Tabby continued to nod and shake her head incredulously as to how they were being treated.

“What a sad way to treat two travellers only needing a place to stay for one night,” she lamented.

The room was grey masonry, dank and gloomy, with a beat-up couch on one side of the room and a worn and tattered lazy boy chair on the other.

Tabby continued shaking her head, “I can’t believe this. Did you see how beautiful this house is upstairs? Look what we get. He’s got a lot of nice rooms upstairs that would have been much more suitable for us than this room. And besides, it’s freezing down here.”

Gus responded, “It’s ok. It’s dry, and it’s warmer than being outside in the night.”

The two angels took to the couch and chair, examining the room and wondering how such a miserable, dismal, shabby room could exist in such a beautiful home. The room was dimly lit by a single bare bulb hanging from the center of the ceiling.

“What a dump!” continued Tabby in a whining tone of complaint, “We deserve better than this. Look, there’s even a hole in the wall over there.”

Gus walked over to the wall with the hole, peered through and then swiped his hand over the ragged hole, using up the one opportunity of angelic power he was permitted on this two-day earthly visit. Miraculously, the hole was re-cemented and set solidly in an instant.

Tabby queried, “Why did you do that, Gus? Are we doing repair work for wealthy people now? People who won’t even give us a warm room for the night!”

Gus replied, “Shh, Tabby, you must stop criticizing things like that constantly, or you won’t earn your wings, you know. Besides, things aren’t always as they seem.”

To the surprise of the two angels the next morning, the door to the room opened very suddenly, and the butler declared, “It’s time for you to go!”

Down the long corridor and up the steep flight of stairs, the butler walked with the pace of the aged. The two angels quietly followed behind him, their feet normally would have been floating along the floor, but as they were “on assignment,” they were relegated to trudging along behind the butler who never gave them a second glance.

As the two angels moved along the main corridor toward the front door, they saw the dining room and an old man seated at the head of the table, eating alone. He looked up at the two angels, said nothing and resumed eating at a table that seemed loaded with food. He didn’t bother looking up from his food again as the trio passed the dining hall entrance. Tabby shook her head in amazement and was about to say something; Gus quieted her quickly with a raised index finger to his lips.

The two angels resumed the exodus.

“Well, I’m glad that’s over with,” whined Tabby. Gus bit his lip. Even an angel’s patience has limits.

Now, the second night. The two angels slogged along Queen St. East, snow falling steadily. This was the downtown core of Toronto, arguably the municipal jewel of Canadian cities. But they saw old houses, boarded or dilapidated storefronts, and haggard-looking street people standing in many of the doorways. At Sherbourne St., they saw the long queue of homeless single-filed outside the Salvation Army shelter. Some of them were lying on the pavement under plastic sheets and canvas rags to ward off the cold.

Tabby opined, “That’s terrible. There is so much wealth in Toronto and just look at that line of people looking for a bed and a warm place to stay for the night. Worse, looking at all those homeless just lying on the sidewalk.”

“Shh, Tabby, ours is not to criticize or complain about others either. We have another agenda to fulfill. Let’s move on.”

The duo came to the door of a run-down house. It looked like it could be 100 years old, maybe built during WW II. A real dump, thought Tabby.

“D’ya think they will have a place for us, Gus?”

Gus knocked on the door as the two angels looked out at the house’s backyard from the front porch. They spotted a couple of chickens and a small goat.

The door was opened by a thin, old man, stooped from age. Gus repeated his request, as made the night before, about their need for a place to stay.

“Please come in,” said the old man, “I am sorry we don’t have much to offer you, but I have an empty room at the back of the house. It’s dry and warm enough, and it even has a large window facing the backyard. My wife is making some supper. You are welcome to join us, although it is not much. Come in, come in.”

“Well, that’s better,” said Tabby. “But I doubt they have very much. From the look of this place, I doubt we will be fine dining,” Tabby pined.

Again, Gus shushed the younger angel. Supper was very simple: roasted root vegetables, some boiled chicken, and some goat’s milk cheese. Tabby thought, “This bread is stale.”

The old man’s wife apologized for the simple supper while cutting two more slices of bread with difficulty as it was very dry, brittle, like balsa wood. Gus ate solemnly. Tabby ate like a starving sailor on leave, with gusto and without awareness of how much she was eating, leaving very little for the old couple to eat, but the two angels hadn’t eaten anything at the mansion the previous night.

Gus nudged Tabby’s knee when Tabby reached out for another slice of cheese. Angels don’t normally eat, but as Gus repeatedly said, an assignment was being fulfilled, and the pair were relegated to feeling hungry as part of the assignment requirements. The knee nudge was Gus’ way of admonishing Tabby for eating so much of the poor couple’s food.

The wife, again with much apologizing, showed the two angels to the back room. They entered and saw it was dry and warm enough. They looked out at the backyard and saw the pair of chickens and the goat tethered to the tree.

Tabby thought, ‘Pretty drab. We deserve better, but these people likely have nothing better.’ Meanwhile, Gus was sending up a prayer of thanks and appreciation.

The lady bid them both a good night, promising to wake them early for some breakfast. Then she quietly closed the door.

The next morning, Tabby looked out the back window. “Oh no,” he exclaimed, “The goat! The old man is burying the goat. It must have died during the night.” The duo came into the kitchen and saw the small kitchen table set for them, which had slices of toast and a very small mound of goat cheese. Again, the couple apologized profusely for the very humble breakfast. A small Melita coffee maker was brewing coffee on the stove.

The woman seated at the breakfast table was sobbing quietly. Tabby asked, “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” The poor woman just sobbed a little more loudly while the old man responded, “Our poor old goat died last night. She gave us milk and cheese. But now we’ve lost her.”

Tabby was beside herself, not quite angry; angels were never to show anger but very upset, nevertheless. She could barely telepathize her thoughts to Gus: “What is this? What’s going on? This is terrible. Last night, we stayed at a rich family’s home, got nothing, and you helped them by doing repair work. Tonight, we’re treated as best as this poor family can treat us. They have next to nothing. They shared what they had, and you let their most important asset die. What’s the matter with you? How could you let this happen?”

Gus just bowed his head in quiet supplication at the table but telepathically replied, “Tabby, things aren’t always as they seem. When we stayed in the basement of the mansion last night, I noticed there was a seam of undiscovered gold in the earth visible through the hole in the wall. That rich family didn’t deserve to discover and claim that find. That owner was too selfish and lacking in generosity. So, I sealed the wall so no one would discover that gold, ever. Then, last night, as we slept in this old couple’s home, the angel of death came for his wife. I renegotiated the angel’s agenda. He relented and accepted the goat as replacement for the wife. So, you see, things aren’t always what they seem, Tabby. You just need to believe that there can be a positive outcome to almost every situation. You just might not know it until sometime later…and one last thing, Tabby. Believe more and stop all your complaining…so that you can keep your wings for many more centuries, even if they are probationary ones. God bless.”

Tabby bowed his head, realizing how wrong she had been with her criticisms and complaints. She acknowledged her unangelic behaviour and swore an oath to always keep her faith and trust in positive belief. She sent her prayer of optimism and appreciation heavenward. As she prayed, beautiful harp music started to play, and bells began to peel over at St. Michael’s cathedral. Then, to Tabby’s amazement, two huge wings floated down into the room and attached themselves to her shoulders. Tabby added to her vow, “From now on, I promise to become a roving guardian angel of optimism and thanks. I will help teach people that if they have faith and trust, they will see everything more positively and if they practice this, their lives will improve for each of them. They will see that life really is wonderful. But we must open our hearts first.”

Tabby then snapped her fingers and flicked a finger toward the backyard. A gold lightning bolt flashed from her fingertips. “There,” she said, using up her one angelic super act to which she was entitled ‘on assignment.’ A goat’s bleat was heard, loud and clear. The pair of chickens now was a much larger flock plucking away by the tree. Tabby saw that the house had changed, been renovated, rebuilt, and really improved. It was bigger and nicely painted, and everything about it looked better. Tabby sighed, “That’s better. This old couple deserved all this.”

Gus smiled. He did it. Tabby was given her ‘permanents.’ His task was completed successfully. He smiled even more, knowing the peeling cathedral bells ringing throughout the city meant other angelic agendas had been successfully completed and many other ‘probationaries’ had just received their ‘permanents.’

“Gus, I had my doubts,” said Archangel Michael. “Tabby was a real challenge, but you did it. You kept your belief in her and it was redeemed. Now, I am pleased to declare you, ‘Gustavus Arcangelus.’

The heavenly choir began singing Leonard Cohen’s, “Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord. Hallelujah.” After all, heaven is for everyone!

FARMERS’ ALMANAC: Winter’s lookin’ bad but Florida looks worse!

When it comes to southern Ontario, the Farmers’ Almanac has bad news for us, a colder than normal winter. The coldest periods will be in early December, early and late January and late February.

Snowfall will be above average in the south west Ontario and below average in the east with the snowiest periods expected in early and late December, much of January and February and early March.

As for the rest of the province, northern Ontario will be cold and snowy.

“A winter of big freezes and heavy snowfall will be centred in Ontario while most of the rest of the country will get some relief and reprieve from snow shovelling and super-cold temperatures,” said Carol Connare, the Almanac’s editor-in-chief.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has been predicting the weather since 1792 while the Farmers’ Almanac has been doing so since 1818.

The winter forecast for Canada is available on its website.

The Farmers’ Almanac predicts the effects of La Nina to produce below-normal temperatures for about two-thirds of the country, from east of the Rockies to Ontario, with the coldest temperatures expected from the Prairies to the Great Lakes region.

The coldest outbreak will be in the final week of January into the beginning of February.

“Ontario’s winter will be filled with a whirlwind of both snow and rain,” the publication wrote.

BATTLE OF AGES: TYSON vs PAUL BOX MATCH – Spectacular staging for a disappointing event; apologies come from NETFLIX for broadcast glitches

NETFLIX tried to present the spectacle of the decade. It failed but only because it was swamped.

The idea of the production was pure Hollywood. The event was spectacular. The live AT&T arena, 70,000 huge. The attending celebrities, Hollywood’s biggest stars who wanted to be seen. The world audience, nearly 300 million, incredible.

The spectacle boiled down to a Battle of Age, youth vs aged. Jake Paul, the less famous YouTube star, 27. Mike Tyson, boxing and world fame, 58.

Each man trained hard, each was in the best physical form they could attain. The rules for the match were modified to favour the ‘old guy,’ 2 minute rounds rather than the normal 3; 8 rounds rather than the normal 12 or 15. No matter.

The match started well for Tyson. He outboxed the younger opponent for the first two rounds. Experience vs caution? Youth took control in the third round. Speed, power, frequency of hits, youth prevailed. The old boxer may have had heart, determination, and passion, but the body was not aboard. Age is the “master” for us all, no matter how hard we try to beat back the hands of time. Time and age win no matter what we do.

The match succeeded in being a worldwide attraction. NETFLIX drew nearly 300 million viewers worldwide, but the load defeated its service system. Buffering and freezing were repetitive problems were exacerbated as fight time drew closer, requiring viewers to wait until NETFLIX servers caught up and managed the unexpected load.

A very successful spectacle for all concerned: NETFLIX, attracted the largest audience ever drawn and is likely to draw again; for Jake Paul, the victor by decision, a $40 million payday and new world acclaim; for Mike Tyson, a $20 million loser’s purse and world sympathy.

This wasn’t Rocky. There’ll be no rematch. Stallone likely could not have written a better screenplay for the event. It was pure Hollywood, but it was a dud as a boxing match. Youth won, but age confirmed its invincibility and that it cannot be defeated.

In short
The take-aways from this event:

  • YOUTH is appealing and exciting;
  • AGE cannot be defeated;
  • MEDIA MOGULS confirm their media might;
  • HOLLYWOOD [BARNUM & BAILEY] will never fail.

NETFLIX offered viewers apologies for the broadcast glitches: APOLOGIES
____________

For $40 million, I would say these kind of things too. Hear the after the match INTERVIEWS

THANK YOU: Poppy Campaign great success, THANK YOU

Thank you donors who contributed to my Poppy/Canadian Legion campaign. You helped raise a couple of hundred dollars for the campaign. I have sent what I received to the Canadian Legion, Br. 606.

As I close the POPPY CAMPAIGN for this year, a few thoughts float around my mind.

One, being chastised for asking for donations and told I was embarrassing and shaming people into donating. That is so ludicrous of a comment, it doesn’t deserve a response.

Donations were far below what I expected or hoped. Teachers are doing their job when it comes to history and Remembrance Day. Students are learning and responding accordingly.

But something still doesn’t fit. Maybe my site is not reaching enough people. Maybe people are more financially strained than I thought. A loonie for a Poppy seems like a stretched lamentation.

Finally, Don Cherry’s words come to mind when he said, “You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that. These guys paid for your way of life that you enjoy in Canada; these guys paid the biggest price.” Cherry was fired by CBC, our national network!

There was no shaming or embarrassment intended in my request for Poppy donations. But if the shoe fits, wear it!

To those who donated, thank you…on behalf of the veterans, the Legion and its members, and all of us who cherish Canada’s national traditions of honouring and paying respect to our military service people.

Thank you.

Thank you!!!

PICKERING: Prepare yourself….Whitby property taxes increase…Pickering’s next???

Pickering taxpayers, prepare yourselves. Mayor Roy, Whitby, just passed a three time tax increase to her electorate using the “strong mayors’ power” and Pickering will surely follow.

By the looks of it, Whitby residents will be getting 5+% tax increases in 2025, 2026 and 2027. That sounds incredible.

All we can do here in Pickering is cross our fingers, hope and pray!!! But our feeling is that taxpayers should prepare themselves. Politicians never suffer during hard times.

Food bank use is breaking all records. Price increases continue endlessly. Gas prices remain high. The media paints a rosier picture about employment rates and interest levels than reality. Ask yourself when was the last time your rent or mortgage payment was reduced?  When was the last time your groceries cost less than the week before?Folks who are unemployed, are you struggling to find a job? The picture painted by the media is rosier than reality. Are we being conned?

AH IN WH: AH’s off the hook again as Special Counsel Jack Smith to resign

Special Counsel Jack Smith successfully brought two cases up against T****, mishandling of govt documents and against T’s efforts to overturn his election 2020 loss. Too many delays stalled the conviction.

T**** will kill the investigation by firing Smith if Smith didn’t resign.

US Special Counsel Jack Smith plans to resign, external before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, external in January, The New York Times and NBC News report.

Trump said last month that he would fire Smith from his post if he was re-elected. Smith brought two federal criminal cases against the Republican.

The first case involves the alleged mishandling of classified documents after Trump left the White House, charges he denies.

The second concerns his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden. Smith filed criminal charges against Trump last year, but the case has been in limbo after a Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity. Trump has pleaded not guilty.

Smith’s office was looking into ways to wind down the investigations into Trump, part of the US Justice Department’s policy that sitting presidents cannot be criminally charged.

AH in WH: Kid Rock offers a peace branch to election losers

Kid Rock ain’t my kind of musical celebrity. In my view, the guy is ‘far out weird,” and there are probably a lot of people who would agree with me in that view.

However, after reading the TorStar columnist Vinay Menon’s column about Kid Rock’s reaction to the American election, I need to review my opinion of the musician. Maybe he’s not a wacko. Maybe he is a deeper thinker, a deeper persona than I gave him credit for being.

Menon praises Rock for his statement of unification and consolidation of the American electorate. Rock urges the victors to consider the unity of the nation as crucial to the new order. Bring the defeated back into the fold and unite the country. Wow, that’s quite the message!

MYTHS: About Winter Tires

Busting Winter Tire Myths

AS SOON AS THE TEMPERATURE consistently dips below 7 C, it’s time to change to winter tires, says Ryan Peterson. We asked CAA Club Group’s manager of automotive services to help debunk some common —and dangerous — myths about winter tires.

Winter tires are too expensive. “I always push back on this,” says Peterson. “A set of tires lasts you approximately 100,000 kilometres. Your summer tires are going to last you for 100,000 km and your winter tires will, too.” You’re still getting 200,000 km out of the two sets but with much better traction along the way. Yes, there’s an upfront cost, but it’s worth it over time.

Two winter tires are all you need. “That’s a dangerous myth,” he says. “You’re going to have a false sense of security from that one set, and the second set will let you down.” A front set of winter tires may corner more quickly, but then the back can fishtail, he explains. With just two winter tires on the rear of the car, you can get moving but may not be able to brake well in slippery conditions.

There’s no need for winter tires unless there’s snow on the ground: `I would actually say that black ice is worse than snow,” he points out. “You can get some traction on snow — it’s slippery, but you can get some resistance to slow down. Black ice is like a roller coaster. It can be much more dangerous than snow by itself.”

You don’t need winter tires if you have four-wheel drive. “Four-wheel drive is great for getting you going, but once you’re moving, it doesn’t help with braking or steering, and that’s when you need snow tires the most,” says Peterson. A 4×4 or all-wheel-drive-equipped vehicle may get you out of the driveway easily, but when you need to stop or turn, you can start to slide — that’s when you realize there are no substitutes for snow tires.

PICKERING: PICKERING taxpayers, foolish? Pretty dumb when it comes to paying for Councillor trips without questions

You just paid $3000 for a councillor’s trip to England. You paid another $2500 for a conference trip expense for a councillor supposedly ‘suspended’ from duties. These are questionable expenses from the view of the taxpayers, who should know about these expenses as they pay for them. What is the purpose of the expense: England, to see Big Ben? England, to ride the Eye? England, to tea with the King? Hotel conference as Councilor when suspended? Should taxpayers get explanations?

Wouldn’t it be nice to have Pickering taxpayers pick up the tab for your holiday? Don’t worry about any related expenses, Pickering taxpayers will pick up the tab. You won’t have to explain anything about the trip. No explanation, no justification, no details. Just order another room service menu item….taxpayers will pick up the tab.

Are the City of Pickering councillors like that? Trips to Europe. Trips to England. Conference expenses while on suspension. And no explanation to the taxpayer.

Any comments about all this? Let’s hear ’em.

A REBUTTAL TO “AH in WH: Why such an AH as T**** won”

You likely should read this article -> WHY first to understand some logical arguments as to why such an AH as T**** won the US ELECTION.

I would like to put this topic to rest…so I have one last comment to make about why such an AH as T**** won….

O’Bama once said, “That’s not who we are…”

Well, as much as I hate to disagree with such an intelligent figure as O’Bama, I disagree with him!

That’s exactly who Americans are….based on what I have seen in the news, in real life, in travels to the USA, “This is who we are…” applies to Americans perfectly.

RACISTS
Americans view themselves as the superior race. Therefore, anyone standing beside an American who isn’t American is inferior. They feel they are better than any other race, nation in the world. Talk to an American casually and watch how this attitude sneaks into the conversation becoming the norm.

BIGOTS
The corollary to racism is bigotry. It is the active voice of racism. Racism may be the philosophy, bigotry is is alive dynamic. It is racism in action mode. And Americans are bigots beyond belief. They act like it. Loud, bombastic, boastful…pushy to the front of the line at the expense of the person beside them. Bigots!

SEXISTS
The chance of a woman President are as likely as a hippo attending your next tea party. There is no way any American is going to accept a woman as their boss. A look at the male:female ratio in big business executive offices says it clearly, “Women, you’re inferior.” End of story.

BULLIES
Stand in line with a bunch of Americans and watch how aggression rears its ugly head. T**** demonstrated this internationally when he pushed an international leader out of the way physically….typical American bullyism. And where you see this as ‘normal’ behaviour is in crime. Americans who don’t get their own way will readily resort to guns to reinforce their way of thinking. The American way !

MYSOGYNISTS
Domestic violence confirms that Americans, males, are mysogynists. If a woman disagrees with an American male, she puts herself at risk of being hit, being assaulted and worse. That may be a male issue as much as it is an American male one, but America puts women in second place, if they’re lucky as easily as a hot knife slices a warm slab of butter. Typical America!

THIEVES
American crime rates grow and grow. Maybe it stems form how life is portrayed on TV: rich, multiple expensive toys, extravagant, luxurious and expensive everything. And every American wants a piece of that, feels they are owed that. And if they don’t have it, they’re going to get it at whatever cost and by whatever means. Ergo, theft!

VIOLENT
If loud arguments don’t succeed, the American way is to kick it up to the next level, force. If you didn’t hear them, the punch to mouth is likely the next notch up in the American way of discussion. Don’t agree….pow!

GOONS
Americans love belonging to a faction, a good old boys club, a cycle club, a gang. They gladly wear the trapping to demonstrate they belong, the ear ring, the nose rings, the tatoo. And as cowardly as they are, they must be part of something so they don’t have to act alone. Cowardly goons everywhere.

IN SHORT
You don’t agree with the above. Then you explain how a total and complete AH like T**** would be elected. It’s a blip? Twice ? It was an accident? 312 electoral college votes? No, none of those answers has any validity. America voted just as they are….because “that’s who they are!!!”

AH in WH: Why such an AH as T**** won

The majority has spoken. They made their choice and as incredible, unbelievable and wrong as it may be, it is the democratic result. T**** should never win an election, not even as dog catcher let alone the President of the USA. The man is a convicted felon, a seditionist, without morals, lacking relationship responsibility, without scruples, a racist, a bigot…the list goes on endlessly.

There seems no reasonable explanation for supporting such a candidate. No normal thinking voter would ever consider electing such a candidate. So why have more than 74 million voters voted for him. The simple answer is anger. The more detailed answer is deeper than that.

Here are explanations as to why so many Americans voted for T****. Americans are not crazy. They are fed up. They are desperate for change. They will vote for anyone who gives them a hope that things may change. T**** is that, hope.

UNRELENTING GROWTH OF ELECTORATE ANGER
Americans are angry and fed up with the current state of affairs in their nation. Their anger has developed and grown government after repetitive government failures to alleviate or ameliorate the situation in the USA.

Americans are angry over the state of the economy; constant increase in the cost of living; grocery costs increasing endlessly; employment opportunities continually decrease as increasing numbers of businesses erode or fail; unaffordability of home purchases and hopelessness of ownership ever happening.

Anger is the biggest cause of American voters abandoning the ‘old order,’ the ‘old guard.’ The electorate see repeated failures of government, over and over and over. It is understandable that the electorate believe enough is enough, throw the inept out, let’s try something new. The electorate is so fed up it has become desperate for a new solution, any solution, anything, anything that can affect a change. It doesn’t matter how outlandish or extreme the alternate may seem to be. The electorate wants change, desperately. T**** is change!

RAGE
The anger of the American electorate has been growing for so long and so much, it is understandable that it has developed into rage. The current national problems have been going on for so long without an iota of relief, it is understandable that the electorate are exasperated. It was inevitable that the electorate’s limits of acceptance and tolerance would be reached. They’re there now.

RAGE BECOMES CONVICTION
With anger and rage stewing for so long, it was inevitable that the electorate would begin to believe that it was the ‘old guard’ itself that were the problem. The old guard politicians have had decades of being elected and given opportunity to rectify or ameliorate the problems. In the US, both Democrats and Republicans. The problems continued. It was inevitable that the Democrats and Republican old guard would be rejected. The anger and the rage have grown to the level that the electorate are convinced the ‘old time’ politicians will never rectify things. That group cannot resolve the problems. Hence, they themselves must be the problem and need to be rejected. Get rid of them regardless of what the alternative may be or claims. Any alternative must be tried.

ENDLESS WARS
The USA has not been “war-free” in more than 100 years. Not one year in which it was not involved in some kind of war in some way. It has been at war, in support of warring nations, funding war efforts without a peace interregnum for more than a century. The incredible expense of this constant war involvement is beyond comprehension. The expenditure is in the trillions, yearly, money which could, should be used to alleviate problems at home. T**** promises relief by not engaging in any wars. He even admonishes nation’s for not being financial responsible with their financial obligations as members of such international military alliances such as NATO and the UNITED NATIONS.

INHERENT BIGOTRY OF SOME AMERICANS
As much as Americans profess support of liberty, freedom, equality, it is lip service. They are hypocrites. It took 200 years before they accepted a black man as President. How long will it take for them to accept a woman as President? Racism was overcome in that office; sexism continues.

Racism still exists in American elections with a woman who is a member of a colored, minority ethnic group. She won’t even be returned as the Democratic candidate for the next Presidential election in 2028.

Racism is pervasive and pollutes other aspects of American voters’ thinking. Many Americans view immigration as a major cause of employment shortcomings in America and these immigrant workers compound the problem in other ways. As many may be undocumented, they are willing to work for lower wages, the repercussions result in employers paying less to all workers. Then, the high number of immigrants results in a heated competition for all jobs. T****’s call for mass deportation is a clarion call that many voters understandably support.

ABORTION
The abortion issue is loaded with emotional repercussions. Religious groups of every denomination oppose abortion. Hence the rejection of abortion and acceptance of the Roe vs. Wade reversal is very understandable and to many Americans very acceptable.

GUN CRIME AND GROWING VIOLENCE
Americans will never give up their guns. Gun related crime and extremely violent crime grows in the US at an alarming rate, unrelentingly. Again, the American response, lip service. Americans proclaim their opposition to gun violence and violent crime but it is no more than lip service. AK 47s, automatic rifles, combat ready arms should not be available at Walmart or Costco. In the US, they are. With that kind of mentality about guns and violent, it is understandable that acceptability of extreme candidates is not an overreach.

NIHILISM
Finally, ‘nihilists,’ a faction existent in every society, are destroyers of anything established, regardless of what it is or its value to society. Lower level nihilists are are the people who destroy elevator walls, public property with graffiti. They make no attempt to justify or rationalize their destruction. They just do it. They simply destroy property and society’s institutions. They want to destroy any and every aspect of established society.

IN CONCLUSION
Americans are good people, reasoning, responsible and wanting good things for their nation. They are good world citizens. However, there choice of Donald T as their president is wrong, on every level and in every way. The US is an outstanding democracy. The majority did not make a mistake in choosing T****. They voted with reason. They had time to give their vote review and consideration. As much as many of us would criticize their choice, it is what it is. The majority has spoken and we’ll live with it.

PICKERING: 55+ ACTIVE LIVING FAIR, a smashing success

Once again, this year’s Active Living Fair was a great success! The City of Pickering organizes the fair to celebrate its 55+ community and offers attendees a wealth of information about active living and wellness.

Pickering’s Mayor, Kevin Ashe, welcomed more than 450 participants to the day’s events. There were numerous vendors, making information available on all aspects of living well and healthy. The speakers were top-notch on topics pertaining to cardiology, finances, age-friendly consulting, and local history.

Special thanks to the local grocery retailer Farm Boy for providing a wonderful selection of lunch bags. A great example of the support local retailers give to City of Pickering endeavours.
,

Further, led by artist June, Pickering has a budding group of enthusiastic artists. Their impressive artistic endeavours were on display for everyone to view in the art studio of the Recreation Complex.
The day was also highlighted by a lunch provided free to anyone who had signed up, then crowned by a fun draw of prizes for those who attended to the end.

There was much happy chattering during this day’s events, followed by many happy smiles in closing.  Happy smiles that look forward to another and even better day next year.

A big thank you, City of Pickering, and to all the volunteers who once again made another Living Well event possible.

AH in WH: a Canadian’s discouraging word after the recent USA election

So glad the US elections are over for another 4 years, even though the midterms happen every 2 years. The people have spoken. It doesn’t matter what we think north of the border. We get inundated with American news channels that carry very radical infocommercials, touting how bad and corrupt the other side is. Hundreds of millions spent on ads while the world is burning and people are starving to death.

TV pundits tell us who is ahead only to be proven drastically wrong; Al spins stories that scare the populace into a frenzy and vote for the guy who is least qualified to do the job. Have faith, oh loyal subjects. We are just pathetic subjects to be used and tossed aside. Our worst fears are coming true.

History may be about to repeat itself on this side of the Atlantic Ocean. Many newcomers who have come to Canada for a new life and escaped from corrupt and war-torn countries only to see it raise its ugly head here know what happens when we elect despots. Two World Wars, the Korean War, and countless other battles since have not taught us anything. Suffer the poor children that inherit this world.

AH in WH: What did you expect?

Could 70+ million Americans be mentally challenged?

How can you explain over 70+ voting for T****?

American voters: very dissatisfied with current national situation or just plain [politically incorrect]?

Consider who they elected:

  • A 78-year-old convicted felon
  • Convicted felon found liable for sexual assault
  • Convicted felon under indictment in a number of jurisdictions
  • Launched an unprecedented attack on the U.S. Capitol to stop vote count
  • Said during his campaign that he would be a “dictator” on his first day in office.
  • Campaigned on an authoritarian agenda
  • Preparing to deliver:
    > mass detention and deportations of migrants
    > revenge against political enemies via the justice system
    > deploying the military against his own civilians

T****: A very sad comment of the American society.

Devil personification wins the White House
Maybe only one persona has committed more sins than this absolute jerk, the devil himself…and…more than 68 million Americans elected him.

The American way
Americans are known for resurrecting criminals as their political leaders. Convicted drug dealers as mayors of large cities. Americans accept indicted criminals as leaders. Americans accept politicians with questionable moral values as leaders. Americans accept seditionists with total disregard for their guilt. Insurrectionists, OK. Revolutionists, fine. This election is an astounding snapshot of American mental ambiguity. How does one explain the election of a totally obnoxious a**hole, a confirmed criminal, a morally corrupt adulterer, a misogynist as their president and more than 68,000,00 voters support him while Harris had 64,000,000? Sixty-eight million voters are challenged with an evaluation of a racist, indicted misogynist. Incredible. Absolutely incredible.

Historical precedent
There is only one historical event that may hint at understanding how this a**hole could win the American presidential election. Does the name Barabbas ring any bells? Barabbas, a biblical figure in the New Testament, is known for being a notorious prisoner released by Pontius Pilate instead of Jesus Christ. The crowd chose Barabbas, a rebel and murderer, to be released by Pilate. Love Barabbas, love T****.

Meet the new Barabbas
It’s stunning how so many Americans disregard what this jerk is and want him as their leader. There is no explanation for this unless these people are themselves mentally questionable.

OK folks, there’s more coming
This is a milestone in American history. America, you deserve what you have asked for. Good luck! Good luck to all of us!

FOOD: The best potato chips

Potato chips should be an occasional treat. They are not health food but they are hard to resist. Taken from an American source, the conclusion about which brand of potato chips is from LAY’s. We have LAY’s in Canada and I am sure there is no difference in how the two nation’s products are made. Here’s the winner…..

HEALTH: Ageing in a digital world

You live in a digital world. Adapt or be left behind.

Ageing in the Digital Era
Our world is becoming increasingly digitalized. More and more services move online everyday. ‘Offliners’ risk being excluded and isolated in an era that embraces fast-changing innovation in digital technology. This is very concerning for older persons who are less digitally connected than the youth who were born into the digital age.

You cannot let this digital world leave you behind. Coping with it and learning about it is a challenging process. Find someone who can help you develop digital skills at a pace comfortable for you. Spend only what your budget allows, but get into the digital world. This world may modify itself to include non-digital persons, or it may not. Be brave. Jump in. Your mind and memory will grow.

Got questions? Phone your local library. Phone someone who uses technology. Explore where you can find help to get you into the “digital pool.”

HEALTH: Fall precautions, toppling over, happen in a blink

Taking a stand against falls

November is Fall Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about the risks of falls. Falls are a significant health concern for older adults, as they can lead to injuries, loss of independence, and a decline in overall quality of life. They are also the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among older adults in Canada, and between 20% and 30% of older adults fall each year. But the good news is, many falls are preventable and there are things you can do to stay steady on your feet.

An open letter to the CBC national TV network

The two national broadcasting networks, CBC and CTV, do not have reporters wearing poppies.

Pursuing this, the national Royal Legion explained that wear a poppy is personal. Maybe the networks have a schedule, namely Nov. 1st.

The BBC reporters all wear poppies. This is not a personal issue for national broadcasters.

I sent the CBC ombudsman, Jack Nagler, the letter below. A couple of days ago, he responded to my phone call that he would pass on the message to the Editor in Chief of the news team. Nothing! Every person on CBC news and CTV news is ‘poppyless.’ This is far from being a personal issue….it is a matter of being a respectful Canadian but perhaps being such is not the CBC or CTV regard as having importance to the news….the national news.

_______________________
An open letter

“Hello Mr. Nagler,

Again I plead with you…RE: wearing of poppies.

The BBC news reporters are wearing poppies; all MPs are wearing poppies; all MPPs are wearing poppies; every politician, municipal, provincial and national is wearing a poppy. All these people are honouring the fallen of the past wars.

It is an absolute SHAME, our national broadcasting network, does not have one single reporter or news anchor paying respect to Canadian veterans on Remembrance Day. This is amazingly SHAMEFUL.

To say I am more than ashamed at the failure of our national broadcasting network to remember is putting it mildly. I am disgusted that the network has failed to honour our veterans, pay respect by adhering to practiced traditions in the country. You can be sure, I will publish and talk about this shameful omission by the CBC every opportunity I get.

I am proud to be a Canadian, ashamed that CBC is our national news network.

His reply:

Dear Mr. Szpin,

I am sharing your email with Mr. Fenlon as a supplement to your earlier complaint.

I should note that a few years ago, when I was working for CBC News, it was generally the practice for on-air journalists to begin wearing poppies on November 1. So you may wish to see how things look over the weekend before drawing too many conclusions.

Sincerely,

Jack Nagler

PICKERING: High Speed Train station not happening in Pickering

Too bad Councillors Nagy and Cook it looks like Pickering still will not get a new train station if Canada and the federal government, not the municipality of Pickering, ever give the go ahead to build a new high-speed rail system between Ontario and Quebec.  Maybe Councillor Cook and Nagy can plan another vacation on Pickering residents tax dollars to explore what train stations look like in Japan as they have a really fine high-speed rail system.
One can see (SEE ARTICLE LINK BELOW) again, that the current plans just like in the plans back in 2021 showed that Pickering is not in the running for a train station.  The federal map shown below indicates that Toronto and Peterborough would be the two closest FEDERALLY planned train stations to Pickering if and when this project ever is finalized.

How high-speed rail would change Ontario and Quebec — if it actually happens

PAY IT FOWARD: I got touched by a ‘good samaritan’ paying it foward

I was at a coffee shop this morning for coffee with a war veteran. As we stepped up, 2nd in line, the young man in front of us stepped aside saying, “Go ahead. Order.”

We ordered but when we went to pay, the young man stepped back up and said, “I got it!”

We just got “Paid forward.”

Never before, but let me assure you, I will do it my next coffee shop visit.

Because of confidentiality and privacy rights, I can only say the young man’s name was DAVE and he lives in Oshawa and works for a landscaping company doing work in Pickering. This was a marvellous Sunday morning experience.

Thanks DAVE !

PICKERING: FALL FLING..great weather, great crowds, smashing success…kudos to Councillors Nagy and Brenner

Pickering’s event by the waterfront, “FALL FLING,” ended on its second weekend of flinging and its last day was a tremendous success and celebration. Mother Nature gave the attendees the right fall weather, sunny and moderate temperatures, so it was comfortable walking outdoors in at the waterfront.

There were nearly 50 vendors, presenters, booths and even food purveyors making it a perfect day for families to browse, carouse, shop and snack. Pickering families of all ages, from adult to grand-adult brought their kids and their grandkids, and their DOGS. It was a wonderful day for those who could attend.

Compliments and kudos to Councillors Nagy and Brenner for the organization and presentation of this happy celebratory festivity on the Pickering waterfront.

As Councillor Nagy said, “We are working hard to make this into a winter celebration too.” So people need to stay tuned for more information and dates about the Fall Fling becoming a Winter Thing!!

* * * From Richard’s desk: a popular NETFLIX Series

Money Heist (Spanish: La casa de papel, (lit. ’The House of Paper’) is a Spanish heist crime drama television series that debuted in 2017. The series traces two long-prepared heists led by the Professor, one on the Royal Mint of Spain, the other on on the Bank of Spain, told from the perspective of one of the robbers, Tokyo. The story is told in a real-time-like fashion and relies on a narrator, flashbacks, time-jumps, and hidden character motivations for complexity.

The series was initially intended as a limited series. Netflix acquired global streaming rights and re-cut the series into 22 shorter episodes and released them worldwide, The full series consists of five parts with varying numbers of episodes in each part.

The high-quality production was filmed around the world from its originating location, Madrid, to Panama, Thailand, Italy (Florence), Denmark, Germany. And Portugal

The series received several awards including the International Emmy Award for Best Drama Series, as well as critical acclaim for its sophisticated plot, interpersonal dramas, direction, and for trying to innovate Spanish television. The Italian anti-fascist song “Bella ciao“, which plays multiple times throughout the series, became a summer hit across Europe in 2018. By 2018, the series was the most-watched non-English-language series and one of the most-watched series overall on Netflix, having particular resonance with viewers from Mediterranean Europe and the Latin American regions.

Money Heist is engaging TV. The storyline becomes as believable as the American series “Mission Impossible” but the episodes become increasingly engaging with each one. The characters are attractive from their initial scenes and become more engaging with each appearance. Then, the music, often behind the scenes rather than dominating, is current (2020s) American and European with snippets from well knowns such as Arcade Fire, Buffy Sainte-Marie, James Brown, The Ronettes, The Crystals, Dusty Springfield and the classic composers like Beethoven, Debussey and Franz Schubert.

The story
A dozen young people are recruited by a planning genius, the Professor, who plans the biggest robbery in Spanish history, the Royal Mint of Spain. Their plan involves holding the Mint captive for days as they continually run the printing presses to build up the cache they plan to steal in the range of 500 million €uros. The amount sounds ridiculous if not outright impossible but becomes believable as the first heist progresses and the printing presses continue to run until the climax a week later.

The second heist is a follow-up to the first, the Professor explains his reasons for planning the robbery of the Bank of Spain, the amount to be stolen, almost 2 billion €uros worth of gold ingots. This is tons of gold, but again, in the style of Mission Impossible, how the heist is to be done becomes plausible once it is explained. Again, the robbers need time inside the Bank of Spain to transform the gold into a form suitable for transportation. This takes more than a week, all the while the robbers are inside the Bank of Spain.

The plot develops into the Spanish Army vs the robbers, and it is a see-saw battle, much like a chess game with the Professor making moves countered by the police and Spanish army. Because the robbery takes so long, there is time for the development of other stories to flesh out relationships, romances, reminiscences, and flashbacks that explain the planning further.

In short
In short, this is engaging TV that will have you enthralled and awed by the story as the plot unfolds with each episode. It is exciting to watch, captivating and attractive. The storyline becomes more believable with each move made by the opposing adversaries. The Professor’s moves to each move made by the Spanish officials are mesmerizing. There is a lot of tension and excitement with scenes of violence and shooting. Given all the gunfire in the series, there is a lot of “stage blood,” there are very few deaths, though the ones that do occur are quite sad.

The series has everything engaging TV should have tension, excitement, romance, plot complexity, mishaps and climaxes that leave you wanting to see more. This is the kind of series that will leave you breathless and wondering at the end of each episode and eager to see the next episode. The series succeeds and delivers marvellous TV with each episode.

Money Heist is TV worth watching.

KUDOS to Cities of Uxbridge and Pickering for their wonderful civic spirit

Kudos to the City of Uxbridge and its Region; Kudos also to the City of Pickering for following suit.

On a recent Sunday drive, I had the good fortune of stopping in the Uxbridge, ON. What a wonderful surprise!

Uxbridge is a quaint, welcoming town northeast of Toronto, much like many other southern Ontario towns. But Uxbridge has a surprise for pedestrian tourists visiting its downtown, large memorials dedicated to the fallen Canadian armed forces veterans, everywhere. Intersection sculptures, streetside plaques and park memorials but the biggest surprise was the streetlight banner memorials:

From October 7 to November 18, 274 of these colorful commemorations hang from streetlamp posts in the city and throughout much of the region,  banners that remind the pedestrians of the lost war veterans. What an incredible sight, an emotional reminder and an awesome commemoration by the City and its residents. It’s a patriotic example of citizens who continue the cherished Canadian tradition of remembering our military heroes.

The Mayor, Dave Barton, the department responsible for this commemorative endeavour and all the contributing residents and friends of Uxbridge are to be commended for this civic commemoration. It is a honorable and memorable endeavour that every visitor to Uxbridge and its region will appreciate.

Kudos to Mayor Dave Barton and all the people involved with this wonderful example of citizens appreciating their fellow citizens.

More details from the Uxbridge Cosmos article VanNieuwenhove/TishMacDonald

The Mayor of the City of Pickering, Mayor Kevin Ashe should be acknowledged and commended also. Some bureaucrats are reluctant to copy other ones for whatever reason. At the risk of being called a copy cat, Mayor Ashe considered the action is above emotional negativity. Ashe has copied Uxbridge’s Commemorative Banners example to the benefit of the City and those who are to be remembered.

Support the Poppy Campaign
Helen Wishnowski (who is an integral part of our Poppy Campaign every year as she coordinates so many of the behind the scene details for the campaign) has asked me to reach out and let our readers know that on this opening weekend of the campaign, the branch will not have Cadets available for Poppy tagging, and so the need for volunteers to tag this weekend especially in various local retail locations is quite important.

In 2023, the local legion raised over $50,000 in Poppy campaign donations. We all hope to surpass that amount in 2024.

Many residents in our community are out and about, and looking to show their support of the campaign from its very first days of operation — and there is still lots of availability on the branch sign up board for this upcoming weekend — one can easily pick a time and location that suits your availability and location preference.

(And per an earlier email request for delivery driver teams for counter boxes, if you have availability this afternoon/evening or tomorrow (Friday, October 25th), please feel free to check in with Helen at 289-314-1960 to see if all of the delivery routes have been filled.  If she still has openings, I am sure she would be grateful for your assistance.)

R’s Desk: Interaction with a very angry Pickering citizen at the Crimson Inflorescence art

Sad what ageing does to some people. I bumped into an example of this sadness when….I was entering the Esplanade Park the day the Crimson Inflorescence art display was being installed. I was just about to step onto the wide circular area in front of the Epitaph at the entrance to the park, when an older couple walked across my path. They were in their late 70s for certain and very close to meeting as I waited for them to pass.

As they passed, the man exclaimed very angrily, “Waste of taxpayers money! Waste of taxpayers money!” as he looked at all the installation work being done.

I responded, “A tribute to fallen veterans, sir!” to which he even more angrily yelled, “I don’t care. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

I addressed the wife, “Does he always yell?” to which the man angrily responded, “You’re damn right I yell. I’m angry, really angry at how taxpayers’ money is being wasted.”

I never photographed the couple for obvious reasons and did not engage in the interaction further for obvious reasons. However, the incident troubled me a lot. Even days later, I find it troubling.

Why I am troubled by this man
It troubles me terribly that this attitude could mask what should be an attitude of sentiment and emotional nationalism. I won’t go judging the man, nor will I present arguments about how out of place his attitude toward this commemoration artwork is.

Instead, I will express my sadness and disappointment for his wife, for fellow City citizens and for the fallen vets for having a person like this in our midst. No matter what has sown such angry seeds in this man’s emotions, he should have some consideration for the people around him. As my life partner told me long ago when I was about to attend Church in jean shorts, “Respect your surroundings and respect others, even when you have differing opinions and views.” I try to live by that philosophy, but I would fear suggesting it to this man.

PICKERING: Interstaff communication, typical personability of City of Pickering

The City of Pickering deserves some praise for how it develops and consolidates the ‘personability’ of the City even as it grows.

One of the many commendable and gratifying aspects of the City of Pickering is the personability of its civil staff. Phone contact with almost anyone in the municipal staff is a pleasure. Invariably, the staff person is ‘smiling’ on the phone, pleasant to deal with, helpful quickly and patient.

Recently, in dealing with another southern Ontario municipality, contacting their staff was an incredibly challenging exercise. Two people, four attempts at contact with each, two weeks later, the responses. One was by email, the other, a phone call.

Experience with City of Pickering has never touched such dismal response, thank goodness. From the receptionists at the City’s main number, 905 683 7575 to specific people, some actually in the Mayor’s office. Responses have been within 24 hrs if not the same day. Pleasant, helpful and very personable, City staff reinforce the feeling, the City of Pickering may be becoming a large cosmopolitan entity but it is keeping its small town personability.

_____________________

An addendum to the above piece, on a recent visit to the Park behind City Hall, I saw a professional video crew video recording a City Hall executive on the park lawn.

A little investigation resulted in the explanation that the City has supplemented its internal staff messaging system. The older methods included phone messaging and email messages. The powers that be in the City have decided that adding a more personal touch of video communication will enhance the already efficient system it uses for internal staff communication.

It is commendable and gratifying that the City walks the walk and talks the talk about Pickering actually being an engaging and appealing City in which to live.

Photos are of staff executive, Marisa Carpino, preparing an interstaff communications video:

PICKERING: Crimson Inflorescence by Linfeng Zhou

Crimson Inflorescence
Source: Glen Hendry, InDurham

Art in Pickering’s Esplanade Park
The City of Pickering unveiled a commemorative display in its Esplanade Park. “Crimson Inflorescence,” created by Vancouver artist, Linfeng Zhou, as inspired by Dr. John McCraie’s famous poem ‘In Flanders Fields.’

Photos of the Unveiling ceremony:
Click -> ceremony

Though the art is worth seeing in the daytime, it is even more engaging after dark when the acrylic poppies emit a ‘mesmerizing glow.’

Zhou wanted to honour the fallen soldiers, as remembered in McCrae’s poem, and he dedicated his art piece to fostering hope for peace and prosperity.

The work was funded by money from the City’s public art reserve, was endorsed by the Pickering Council and had the local Branch 606 of the Royal Canadian Legion consult about the suitability of the design and materials used.

The design of the art is intriguing and strongly engaging in its simplicity and creativity. The park’s streetlamp posts become stems for the iconic poppies basking in a haunting glow after dark, prompting reflection of sacrifice, memory, and gratitude. An incredibly poignant tribute and memorial honouring the memory of the fallen and celebrating cherished Canadian traditions.

Zhou is an amazing artist whose works are more than just visual pieces. They engage people connecting them to other worlds and also incorporate them as part of the art work. Read more about the artist at Linfeng Zhou.

WINTER: Prepare Your Car for Winter

Prepare Your Car for Winter
Source: Lifehacker

Winter is right around the corner, and while you may be stocking up on cozy sweaters and taking steps to rid your house of drafts, you also need to do a few things to get your car ready for the season.

Vehicles need a little extra attention in the winter. Here’s what to think about now so your ride is ready to go when the cold weather hits.

Snow tires
Because winter roads are notoriously icy and make your car’s tires work harder, you should start there. There are three things to keep in mind:

  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated because traction is vital for getting you through the snow, and temperature changes can affect tire pressure.
  • Get your wheels aligned which will make it easier to maintain control in icy conditions.
  • Check your tire tread to see if you need a new set of wheels.

An emergency kit for your car

Even if you live in an urban area and don’t foresee getting stuck somewhere snowy with no way out, you should be prepared for the worst. Put emergency supplies in your trunk now so you always have them. Not sure what to include? Start here:

  • Extra blankets, mittens, socks, and hats
  • An ice scraper and snow brush
  • A flashlight (with extra batteries, uninserted)
  • Jumper cables
  • A basic first-aid kit
  • Bottled water
  • A multitool like this one , which has a pliers, various screwdrivers, a knife, and more
  • Road flares and reflective warning triangles
  • Windshield cleaner fluid
  • A bag of sand (for traction)
  • A small or collapsible shovel
  • Hand warmers

Keep the crucial items somewhere accessible, like under a car seat, so even if you can’t get to the trunk, you can grab your kit.

Your car battery
One way to avoid getting stuck and needing that kit is to make sure your battery is functioning well. Have a professional evaluate the condition of your battery and replace it if necessary—before it gets cold out.

Clean your battery terminals by disconnecting negative cables, then the positive cables, and using a battery cleaning tool or wire brush to clean the terminal posts. Next, clean off grease and acid before reinstalling the positive cables, then the negative ones again. You can also ask a mechanic to do this, which is what I recommend if you have the money.

Windows, latches, and hinges
In the winter, freezing water can get into the window tracks, which can then damage your window regulator cables. Lubricate your window tracks with spray silicone or dry teflon spray by lowering the window and shooting right into the front and back window tracks. Open and close the window a bunch of times to spread the lube around. You can do this with your locks, too, even if you usually use a remote to access your vehicle.

Finally, lube all your latches and hinges. If your car won’t start when it’s cold out, that’s the worst time to discover you’re also having a hard time opening the hood. Your local Canadian Tire store will have all the right lubes for these various parts.

Coolant levels
Coolant is what protects your engine from freezing and cracking in the wintertime. So make sure you have enough. Have a mechanic check your coolant is appropriate for winter driving.

Windshield for winter
Your windshield also needs some attention. First, make sure you have enough windshield wiper fluid.

Consider the condition and age of your wipers. Winter wipers are made especially for winter weather. Heavier and made of rubber, it is advisable to have them installed and usable only for the winter.

Keep your car gassed up
Keep your gas tank at least half full during winter months to help prevent the likelihood of a gas line freeze. Plus you want to ensure you have enough juice to keep your heater running in case you get stranded somewhere cold.

Auto mechanic
If you are not familiar or unskilled with car matters, visit a car shop and have a mechanic do the necessary work for you. You are investing in your safety in winter driving.

Province prioritizing affordability for families by unveiling plan to fix “last mile” barriers

October 21, 2024
Ministry of Energy and Electrification

TORONTO –The Ontario government is removing barriers that slow the construction of new homes and businesses by making it easier and more affordable to connect to the province’s world-class clean electricity grid.

According to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator, the province’s demand for electricity is forecast to increase by 75 per cent by 2050. That includes growing demand from new homes and industry, each of which will need to be connected to the province’s growing grid. Under existing rules, the process can be slow and burden homebuyers and new businesses with unreasonable costs.

“Too many families face barriers to homeownership, and that is why we are acting on all fronts to reduce the cost for future homeowners and investors,” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Electrification. “We are taking a generational lens to fixing a long-standing barrier for young Canadians to enter the housing market. As our population increases, our government will act decisively to implement our plan to connect the “last mile” so that ultimately, we cut costs for prospective homeowners and end the barriers to job-creating investment.”

The government intends to introduce legislation that will, if passed, support the construction of new homes and businesses by making it easier and more affordable to make those “last mile” connections. The legislation would amend the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998 to enable regulation making authority to protect existing ratepayers while reducing upfront capital costs of new lines that would otherwise increase the costs to new homes and businesses.

Minister Lecce has also asked the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to implement all recommendations from its Housing Connections Report, to dramatically reduce barriers to home building, job-creating investment, and agricultural expansion. Ontario’s plan to reduce costs for families and businesses owners includes:

  • Amending the Distribution System Code (DSC) to extend the revenue horizon for connecting residential developments from 25 years up to 40 years, allowing the costs of new infrastructure that will serve this province for generations to be spread over a longer period.
  • Amending the DSC to provide clarity regarding the conditions under which a local distribution company should extend the connection horizon for new developments.
  • Establishing a new capacity allocation model that considers multi customer, multi-year projects.
  • Establishing a Housing Electricity Growth Forum to bring together designated municipalities with housing targets, impacted local utilities, industry and construction leaders, and the OEB to discuss ways to accelerate connections while reducing costs.
  • Minister Lecce also asked the OEB to consider further amendments to the DSC to extend the connection horizon for new electricity lines to housing development projects to 15 years.

“Our government knows that we need all hands-on deck when it comes to addressing the province’s growth and housing supply challenges,’’ said Paul Calandra, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. “We owe it to the hardworking people of Ontario to help deliver the fully functioning infrastructure that supports the homes they need.”

These moves to reduce the costs of connecting to the grid will form a key part of the government’s vision for the future of the energy sector, which will be released in the coming days, and build on Powering Ontario’s Growth, the government’s pragmatic plan to meet growing energy demand and reduce emissions by expanding Ontario’s reliable, affordable and clean grid, including:

Quick Facts

  • New regulatory making authority could allow the government to reduce costs for first-mover customers by allowing costs of new infrastructure to be allocated as additional customers in high-growth areas connect to the line, rather than all costs being paid by the “first mover.”
  • The Housing Electricity Growth Forum will be chaired by the Deputy Minister of Energy and Electrification and the Deputy Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The first meeting will take place before the end of the year.
  • Ontario’s electricity system is among the cleanest in the world, powered by a diverse supply mix including nuclear, hydroelectric, renewables, natural gas and biomass.

Quotes

“We are actively listening to job creators in every industry across Ontario, addressing the barriers they’ve identified around connecting to the energy grid quickly and cost-effectively. By providing tools to get faster, more responsive, and more affordable last-mile connections to the grid, we’re ensuring industries can continue to invest and grow in our province, creating good, high-paying jobs for families now and into the future. We have also heard from Local Distribution Companies across the province about the need to continue efforts to build out the last mile connection and will continue working with them to ensure economic growth in every community in Ontario.”

– Sam Oosterhoff
Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries

“As our province continues to attract record numbers of new investments by both domestic and international companies, these businesses will require clean, affordable and reliable sources of energy as they expand and grow their operations in Ontario. Reducing electricity cost burdens on businesses will help to ensure a competitive business climate that will spur economic growth and the creation of new, good-paying jobs for our highly skilled workforce.”

– Vic Fedeli
Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade

“We thank the Minister of Energy and Electrification for his endorsement of our recommendations. We are grateful to our stakeholders for their participation as we developed our advice, and we look forward to working with them to implement this important work.”

– Susanna Zagar
Chief Executive Officer, Ontario Energy Board

“We recognize the importance of making it more affordable to connect new homes and businesses to Ontario’s electricity grid. The government’s initiative to reduce upfront costs will help ensure that our growing communities have access to reliable and affordable power and will continue to make Ontario a destination of choice for families and economic investment.”

– Teresa Sarkesian
President and CEO, Electricity Distributors Association

“Facilitating supportive infrastructure like last mile connections is precisely the type of leadership we need from the Minister of Energy and Electrification to build more homes in Ontario. I’m very happy to see the Ministry continue to reduce regulatory barriers and help make housing more attainable for Ontarians.”

– Scott Andison
CEO, Ontario Home Builders’ Association

SCAMS: Another scam associated with your phone

The article from Lifehacker, see below, discusses a new AI scam that has emerged, leveraging advanced technology to deceive individuals. Here are the key points:

  • Nature of the Scam: Scammers are utilizing generative AI to create highly convincing impersonations of individuals, including friends and family. This technology can clone voices and even generate realistic video deepfakes, making it difficult for victims to discern authenticity.

  • Examples of Deception: One prevalent tactic involves impersonating loved ones in distress. Scammers use cloned voices to fabricate emergencies, prompting victims to act quickly and send money without verifying the situation.

  • Emotional Manipulation: The article highlights how these scams often exploit emotional responses, creating scenarios that induce panic or urgency. This emotional manipulation is a critical element in successfully executing these scams.

  • Preventive Measures: To guard against these scams, the article suggests establishing a “code word” with family members to verify identity during unexpected calls. It also emphasizes the importance of skepticism when receiving urgent requests for money or personal information.

  • Awareness and Education: The piece concludes with a call for increased awareness about AI technologies and their potential misuse in scams. Understanding how these technologies work can help individuals recognize and avoid falling victim to such deceptive practices.

EDITORIAL: Is it time to shut off electronic devices?

There’s just too much information being blasted at you endlessly.

Maybe it’s time to shut off all our electronic devices.

The news is endless sensationalism: crime, war, violence, everywhere and endlessly. Not only is it fatiguing and very tiring but it also desensitizes everyone, so we are shocked less and less by what used to astonish and stun us before. We’re tiring of things which should find alienating and abhorrent. Hear about Gaza, over and over and over, and the ears shut it off. Hear story after story after story of violent crime and soon you hear nothing at all.

Maybe it’s time to shut off all our electronic devices. Read a good book. Read a funny story. Go for a walk. Try a new recipe. Phone a friend to yack about the weather. Get away from all this media trash. Take a break.

If you can’t resist TV, select comedies, select sports, select nature documentaries, select a cooking show. Find something that will distract you from the ‘real world’ that seems to be an endless sinking into a quagmire of violence, fake news and sensationalism.

If you have to be news-connected, read a newspaper where you are in control. You can read what you choose, at a pace you like, slowly savouring each word, appreciating the quality of the writing or critiquing it. But you are the information manager. Whereas with TV or the Internet, you are not the manager. The information is coming at you the way Zuckerberg or Musk wants it to. And that information is coming at you so fast, you have no real time to evaluate it, give it consideration, to gauge its validity and actuality.

So get away from the sensational buzz of electronic devices and get back into your own life, your family, your friends. It’s a much better social circle to be in. Enjoy it fully.

St. Paul’s on the Hill FOOD BANK needs your donations

The Pickering Food Bank, St. Paul’s on the Hill Community Food Bank, needs your help – will you help?

I willingly donate to our local food bank whenever I can, though I am unhappy with food banks on principle. Food banks did not exist a generation ago. Reliance for such assistance rested on church groups. Our world has changed. Today, these groups have been supplemented by food banks. In Pickering, the St. Paul’s on the Hill Community Food Bank.

Reliance on Food Banks at crisis levels
Can you believe 1 in 10 Torontonians rely on food banks? Complain as we may about this crisis, elected representatives have not resolved the root problems.

Food bank reliance grows alarmingly. As quickly as stock is replenished, the shelves are emptied. As much as anyone may oppose food banks, the needy have no other recourse but to rely on them and your donations: food and funds.

Who are the food bank users?
Food banks are used by people in desperate need: families, the homeless, unemployed and under-employed, residents and immigrants, citizens and those wanting to become one. These people have one concern for themselves and their families: food.

How you can help?
Financial donations are a practical way to help. With financial donations, St. Paul’s on the Hill Community Food Bank can purchase the most urgently needed stock from wholesalers with bulk purchases.

Can you afford a donation? Will you consider making one?

Ways to make a donation:

  1. eTRANSFER to   foodbankdirector@stpaulsonthe hill.com

  2. PAYPAL

MUHAMMAD ALI: Prescient words from the Boxing GOAT (Greatest of all time) Champ

The late Muhammad Ali, World Boxing legend, gave this answer in an interview, when he was under pressure to go and fight in Vietnam, or else be imprisoned, which actually happened.

“I’m not going to duck. I’m not burning any flags. I’m not going to run to Canada. I’m staying right here.

You want to send me to jail? Fine, go ahead I’ve been in jail for 400 years. I could be there for four or five more, but I’m not going to go 10,000 miles to help murder and kill other poor people. If I want to die, I’ll die right here, right now, fighting you, if I want to die. You’re my enemy, not any Chinese, not any Vietcong, not any Japanese. You’re my opponent when I want freedom. You’re my opponent when I want justice. You’re my opponent when I want equality.

You want me to go somewhere and fight for you? You won’t even defend me right here in America, neither my rights, nor my religious beliefs. You won’t even defend me here at home.”

SCAM ALERT: BRUSHING Scams as we enter holiday season

The Holidays are Coming and So Are Brushing Scams

It’s not even Halloween yet, but believe it or not, the holiday shopping season is coming, and it will be here before you know it. And we want to help keep you informed and safe during the upcoming holiday season. Today, our topic is Brushing Scams.

What is a Brushing Scam?
A brushing scam is a deceptive practice where a seller sends unordered items to a customer’s address. The goal is to leave positive reviews on their own online store, artificially boosting their reputation and attracting more buyers.

Brushing Scams Increase During the Holidays
The holiday season, particularly Christmas, is a peak time for online shopping. During the busiest shopping season of the year, scammers see an opportunity to exploit the surge in purchases.

Brushing scams are more prevalent during the holiday season.
As more people shop online, the chances of falling victim to scams also rise. The Christmas & Holiday season means people will buy gifts for friends and family members. And people tend to be less cautious during the most festive season. This can lead to decreased vigilance and an increased likelihood of falling for scams.

The pressure to find the perfect gift during the holiday season can make shoppers more susceptible to impulsive decisions and less likely to verify the legitimacy of sellers. Scammers often capitalize on holiday promotions and discounts to lure unsuspecting customers.

How to Protect Yourself from Brushing Scams
Before purchasing, research the seller’s reputation, and check customer reviews from multiple sources.

If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be cautious of sellers offering greatly discounted items.

Regularly check your credit card and bank statements for unauthorized charges. Most banks offer “Alert messages,” a service where you get an alert from the bank or credit card company by email or text anytime a transaction over the amount you specify is made.

If your credit card company and bank(s) offer alerts, sign up for them. Alerts can save you a lot of grief and trouble.

Report any suspicious activity to your bank or credit card company immediately.

If you receive a package from an unknown sender, be cautious about opening it. Research the sender before proceeding.

If you believe you’ve been a victim of a brushing scam, report it to the relevant online merchant or marketplace.

By being aware and learning more about brushing and scammers’ tactics, you can help protect yourself from brushing scams and enjoy a safe and happy holiday shopping season.

Pickering “ZONING By-law” change proposal

Residents of Pickering should be aware that different areas of Pickering have various Zoning designations and these designations were made for specific reasons.

Our Council looks like it wants to change these designations to one designation for all of Pickering, thereby ignoring all of the reasons for the original designation.  The justification for making the change is to “streamline” the process and make it easier and quicker for development.

From past experience warrants evaluation of the council’s Zoning redesignation. There are questions that need consideration:

  • Who benefits from zoning uniformity?
  • Is the varied zoning inefficient or disadvantageous?
  • Who  benefits from the new “Streamlining process?”
  • Was the original system broken? Inefficient? How so?

Please take the time to review Council and Planning departments proposal and try to attend the upcoming meetings.  The link for this proposal is below along with a link provided for a map.

Residents interested in the future of Pickering may want to evaluate and review this new proposal for zoning change.

There is a huge conflict of interest with the meeting dates of November 4, 2024. Not sure if this is intentional or not. However that evening, from what I understand, there is also a meeting at Chestnut Hill Rec complex [I still can’t get used to calling it that] regarding the development on the east side of Brock Rd. between the 401 and Kingston Road. The last time there was a meeting discussing this development, there was another conflicting meeting. We need to get people out to both.                                          Janice F.

It seems every level of government is now proposing intensification across the board; Christina Freeland is on the news today espousing major changes for housing development, and we know what Mr.Ford is pushing on the municipalities; even though our Council did vote unanimously at the Sept.3/24 meeting to not adopt major zoning changes being proposed from the Province; up to 4 housing units on a building lot; and up to 6 housing units on a corner lot; from 2016 to 2021 I delegated many times regarding the Infill and Replacement Housing in Established Neighbourhoods to revamp the zoning in R3 and R4 precincts; our community of Fairport Beach was one of the test precincts used to evaluate the amalgamated zoning standards and by and large we came through this study in one piece; we managed to preserve the 9m height restriction, set backs, and lot coverage requirements. When it came to a vote it passed 6-1; the lone dissenter was our Ward 1 Regional Councillor Kevin Ashe who was the seconder to the motion put forward by Maurice Brenner in Nov. 2016 to hire a consultant.                                               Paul W.

__________________________
I would suggest we send a request to the Clerk outlining the problem and thereby, requesting a change of date for one of these two meetings.

This change would enable full citizen participation  instead of residents having to choose one public meeting over another!          Gloria R.

POINT-COUNTERPOINT: something smells in the State of Denmark…oops, Ontario?

Jacob Hoggard not guilty of Northern Ontario sexual assault

_________________

Democracy and our justice system has rules and guidelines. You may not like the outcome, but it is the majority speaking. You have to hope you are in that faction, rather than the minority because the majority rules.

In the case of a trial, it’s innocent, until proven guilty beyond any doubt. Somehow, this verdict seems uncomfortable. Not surprising, particularly if you believe in the power of the ‘old boys club.’

Another bothersome aspect to this verdict is that it feels like women were downtrodden again. The women were violated…etc., etc.

But this is where democracy is fair or just, regardless. Is there a possibility there was consensual sexual? Then, no conviction should be made. Is it possible the victim consented to the sex somewhere along the way? Again, there should be no conviction and there wasn’t. Could the victim changed her mind along the way? Well, here is decision time for the jury. Not you, not me, but the jury panel who heard the evidence. If they had any reasonable doubt anywhere along in the case, then not guilty must stand. Innocent until proven guilty. At times, not a comfortable outcome, decision but done in the right way by a panel of regular people, reasoning people, listening to the evidence and then determining the verdict as they saw as reasonable.

A CALAMITY OF SOULS, David Baldacci

A CALAMITY OF SOULS,
David Baldacci

Synopsis
Set in the tumultuous year of 1968 in southern Virginia, a racially-charged murder case sets a duo of white and Black lawyers against a deeply unfair system as they work to defend their wrongfully accused Black defendants in this courtroom drama from #1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci.

Jack Lee is a white lawyer from Freeman County, Virginia, who has never done anything to push back against racism until he decides to represent Jerome Washington, a Black man charged with brutally killing an elderly and wealthy white couple. Doubting his decision, Lee fears that his legal skills may not be enough to prevail in a case where the odds are already stacked against both him and his client. He quickly finds himself out of his depth when he realizes that what is at stake is far greater than the outcome of a murder trial.

Desiree DuBose is a Black lawyer from Chicago who has devoted her life to furthering the causes of justice and equality for everyone. She comes to Freeman County and enters a fractious and unwieldy partnership with Lee in a legal battle against the best prosecutor in the Commonwealth. Yet DuBose is also aware that powerful outside forces are at work to blunt the victories achieved by the Civil Rights era.

Lee and DuBose could not be more dissimilar. On their own, neither one can stop the prosecution’s deliberate march towards a guilty verdict and the electric chair. But together, the pair fight for what once seemed impossible: a chance for a fair trial and true justice.

Over a decade in the writing, A Calamity of Souls breathes richly imagined and detailed life into a bygone era, taking the reader through a world that will seem both foreign and familiar.

Richard says
One of the best books I have ever read.

Baldacci is a best-selling author and world-renowned, and this book reinforces his reputation in spades. The book is more than a page-turner. It’s a page-mesmerizer drawing you into the story from the very beginning and never loosening its grip on you.

The plot is based on American society in Virginia in the late 60s, with its society that is steeped in hate, prejudice and racism. Baldacci successfully captures the atmosphere and thinking of the times, loaded with antipathy and hate for Blacks and fear and trepidation about whites. Baldacci, a Virginian himself, understands full well the polarization of Americans of the south, even today, and he strives to be politically correct in his writing: the pejorative ‘N****r’ is never used; instead, when its use suits the story, he uses “N______” which to border some kind of ethical or principle lines or perhaps it just should be done so.

The story may be a tribute to Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird, as it has the same plot, a Black man accused of murder being defended by a white man who is uncertain about his own principles and beliefs. Baldacci adds a few more wrinkles to the story that make the story even more engaging.

Baldacci’s excellence shines through in many areas in this book: his dialogues feel authentic, his characters grow page by page, his ‘antagonists’ are easily disliked, and the sympathy and empathy for the Blacks is pulled out of the reader, page after page.

Readers will cheer for our hero and wish him luck as he takes up the legal challenge set before him. The trial is one engaging moment after another with a blend of tension-filled surprise twists and expected and easily guessed moments of predictability. But even so, every reader will want to read on into the wee hours of the night as they want to see what happens next on the next page.

Finally, Baldacci deserves kudos and compliments for his closing pages. He never lets up. The majority of readers will be surprised by the climax after the trial. Baldacci is superb at keeping readers engaged right down to the last line.

Not only a good book, but probably one of the very best I have read. The writing is excellent. How he deals with the story’s foundation of hate vs respect and acceptance is riveting. The dialogue is authentic and credible. The ingrained hatred, as demonstrated by some of the characters, is palpable. The tension between what is happening and what is expected is relentless. Baldacci brings American beliefs and thinking of the 60s to life. Sadly, it may still have tendrils of life in American life today.

In short, Baldacci’s A Calamity of Souls is a top-notch must-read

EDITORIAL: Is censorship alive, well and well-developed in the City of PICKERING?

Recently a news source, REBEL NEWS, wrote a piece claiming censorship of the City of Pickering. This is a rebuttal of that “news story.”

_____________

Is the City of Pickering located in the Dominion of Canada — or the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea?

It’s hard to tell these days, really.

Check out these examples of censorship measures adopted by this council claiming to being done in the name of regulation and efficiency:

  • delegation times have been slashed from 10 minutes to five minutes;
  • there is no longer a question-and-answer period;
  • media outlets have to be “approved” by two-thirds of the council in order for the journalist to cover the meeting;
  • recording meetings on cell phones is now prohibited;
  • allegations that the live feed of council meetings is allegedly being manipulated and censored.

Durham Regional Police Service enforces the city council’s regulations.

The case of Councillor Lisa Robinson is an especially troubling case that is the background to this REBEL NEWS piece where it points out that  the ‘regulation’ being imposed is an infringement of democracy and limitation of free speech.

This is not a case of a plea on behalf of Councillor Robinson. That is another matter, dealt with on this elsewhere on this website.

The City Council and Mayor Ashe need a better way to deal with the difficulties presented by Councillor Robinson, better ways than:

  • cutting off her microphone at council meetings;
  • docking her months salary;

This editorial was inspired by claims made by REBEL NEWS, a new news source which seems more interested in muckraking than in news publications. News is not opinion or commentary. Editorializing is the appropriate way to comment and express opinions about the news. A disturbing trend in today’s new publication seems to be news organization adhere to the philosophy that they are new sources. Therefore they can comment on the news. No, that is not news broadcasting.

In the old days, commentary was the purview of EDITORIALS and Letters to the Editor. Today, it has been modified to where it claims to be NEWS BROADCASTING. It is not news broadcasting. It is opinion and commentary. Opinion has no right to stake a claim on FACT. It is not! It is not news! It is opinion, subjective, personal, biased and prejudiced.

Rebel News writes about the threat to democracy with this Robinson story. Democracy is threatened when the majority is quashed, forbidden from discussion and not permitted to voice their views. Democracy also means that once all parties have been given a reasonable opportunity to express their views, there is a vote on the issue and the majority rules. Some may have issues with the outcome, but that is how democracies work. We have not found a better political system. A better system may not exist. But it is what we have, and if you believe in democracy, you abide by its outcomes, not denigrate it, reject it, or revolt against it as former US president T**** did on Jan 6th, 2020. He disagreed with the democratic outcome of an election and incited insurrection to overturn the peaceful turnover of power. “Kill Mike Pence!” was a rallying cry.

Mayor Ashe and the Council are not anti-democracy; they are pro-meeting efficiency. Robinson has had her opportunity to speak. More rebuttal on her part is not improving productivity, nor is it reasonable. It is recalcitrance and rebellion.

Let democracy, with its related freedoms, prevail. But remember, pragmatism and common sense must limit and regulate unbridled discussion and commentary. Lisa Robinson is now considering running for mayor in the next municipal election — she has that right. However, criticizing the City Council as dictatorial and censoring without an appropriate contextual explanation is wrong. That violates free speech and democratic principles.

Put all this to bed. Let’s move on with practical, proper municipal business.

Words of Wisdom from Ruth Coghill

Dear Richard

Since my last update, we have entered a new season. Welcome autumn! September brings new beginnings, programs start up, schools and universities open doors to this year’s students, Bible studies gather again, and so much more. Very soon our calendars fill to overflowing. Connecting with you today is such a delight.

My heart is full as I think of you, your ongoing prayer, words of encouragement and support for Words To Inspire. As we join together, God’s call for Words To Inspire is confirmed and strengthened. I praise Him for all of you, His faithful ones.

Now, to keep you in the loop about all the good work God is doing through our ministry. I am amazed at, and oh, so thankful, for His goodness.

Words To Inspire in Canada

In Holmesville, New Brunswick, Carla led a group of women in the Woman of Worth study, with the women being inspired by God’s truths about their true value.

This is the beginning of much more in my birthplace, New Brunswick.

Last spring, several groups engaged in the newest study, Woman of Worship and I taught the course online. What an absolute joy to gather with a focus on Jesus, worthy of all our praise.

As the ‘in person’ study drew to a close in April, I sensed that there was more for the women in our area. With a new team of three dynamic women (Sonja Pretorius, Debbie Gallagher, and Donna Neale) we created Kawartha Women of Worship as a fresh initiative of Words To Inspire. Each month from May to August, women gathered from many areas to sing, make and strengthen friendships, have a cup of tea, and listen to an inspiring story of God at work in a woman’s life.

Coming November 26, 2024 @ 6:30 Trentside Baptist Church in Bobcaygeon – Cyndi Wilkens will share her empowering story of life as a quadruple amputee. Mark your calendar and bring a friend!

Words To Inspire in Nepal

Words To Inspire Nepal team is composed of twelve women under Shusma Adhikari’s leadership. As our Words To Inspire Coordinator, Shusma is continually looking for opportunities to share our Lord through the WOW Bible studies. She sends a great report:

We are truly grateful to God for His goodness in our lives throughout all seasons. Inspired by God’s word, we are determined to continue to empower women through His Word.

Our twelve WTI women are leading house fellowships, church meetings and mission work because of the Woman of Worth study. God spoke to the women during our time together and stirred hope and healing in their hearts. We say Wow in Jesus as He touches these broken lives and gives beauty instead of ashes. Thank you, Father!!

One participant, Sudha, with a terrible past, was transformed by the Woman of Worth study. By the end of the class her previously closed heart opened up and she began reciting a number of Psalms and other Bible verses, sharing God’s words in tears. She experienced the Word as a Person in her life and situation. Just a few days ago she flew to Cypress for work. She has gone as a new person, no longer bound in sin and abuse. Hallelujah!

We have seen many women come out of enemies’ traps of lies and get healed from past abuse by God’s love.

In the past few months we have completed two studies on Women of the Word and Woman of Wisdom in Kathmandu and Lalitpur. Every year, as a team, we want to do at least  five or six classes.

Please pray for us. Everyone needs to hear God’s truth and be free from the lies of our culture.

Pray for:

  • Our WTI team to grow closer together.

  • A zoom account as we are from different areas of Nepal. Cost $23. Monthly. Praise God for the fund He has provided for the study.

  • God’s guidance on where to go as people call us for the studies.

  • Ram Pandey, as he is translating Woman of Worship. The women in Nepal will be blessed to have this fourth and final book in the WOW series in their own language!

Two other WTI leaders, Meena and Pabita, co-led Woman of Wisdom for the first time, experiencing both teaching and learning. Pabita said:

“I have never understood the book of Ruth this way before. I reflected on my own life, especially in my relationship with my mother-in-law. It is rich, coming into God’s covenant and remaining faithful to keep the covenant is so important for each one of us as Christians. I truly understood and got to know God’s covenantal love for me. The more I studied and taught, the more I am loving Him. He is ‘for me, in me and with me’. WOW.”

Meena writes:

“My experience in teaching. Truly, I felt I am not equipped to lead this study. I was depending so much on Shusma Didi, wherever she would take me. I felt less burden with her teaching but this time I was teaching without her. “God, I need your grace more than ever before.” I was too afraid that I would miss something, I know this teaching is so powerful and is life changing. Thank God for his faithfulness! God can use anyone if we humbly obey and say ‘Yes’ to Him. Praise God! Thanks to Shusma Didi for entrusting us.”

Two testimonials from this WOWisdom Study

Sita Achhami (front row holding baby)

Covenant: The word covenant was so powerful for me as I learned through the study. In God’s covenantal relationship I found there is always restoration and reestablishment. Since the first day of the class, it challenged me deep inside because I had a problem with a person. As I started thinking of God’s love for me through the study, I felt that God was changing my heart and I felt that I can love the person no matter what.  Thank God!

Sita Tamang (red dress left centre row)

Choices: Making right choices is so important which I have never thought of before,  how it affects one’s life. As I was studying how Ruth was not just making the right choices but the best choices ever, I got to reevaluate myself. It reminded me of my past. I remembered how  my husband and I were ministering a small church in the village back then. I felt the call to serve the people there. However, as my children were growing, I felt like the need to move to a city for their better education. So, we left the community with no one to look after it. When I think of this, I don’t know whether I had made the right decisions. Did we do the right thing? My heart was hardened for so long. After this study, I felt I need to pray more and seek God’ guidance and clarity. Perhaps we should go back and gather the community again.

Words To Inspire in Angola

Janet Holden is our Angolan coworker. She is presently in Canada and will be at the Called conference in Guelph on October 19. Check out the agenda and register at womentogether.org. This is a wonderful Canadian conference.

Janet and her late husband went to Angola 35 years ago and have impacted the nation in Education and Biblical truths. When her husband, Jim, passed away in 2010, Janet made the decision to stay and continue the work they started as a couple. With a generational legacy of missionaries, Janet’s five children live there, actively involved in Angolan culture.

Bob and I travelled to Angola in 2019 and saw the incredible contribution this family provides to the nation. I look forward to posting more about Janet, a woman you need to know.

Janet’s son, Paul, translated the third book in the WOW series, Woman of Wisdom, into the Portuguese language and is presently working to translate the first book, Woman of Worth. Thanks, Paul, for all the work you put into making the WOW books available to Angolan women.

Janet is teaching Woman of Wisdom and the students glean many truths  of Covenant from this study. Way to go, Janet. We look forward to more from Angola.

Well, my friends, there is more but I’ll share other happy happenings in my November update.

Thank you for being a faithful partner in ministry. Please continue to pray that God would move among His people.

Joyfully serving,

OBITUARY: Mara King

KING, MARA MARIA (nee BONUCCHI)

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Mara King, of the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands, Ontario, on September 22 at the age of 73.

She passed away peacefully at Providence Care Hospital in Kingston. Mara was the loving and devoted wife of Edward King for 52 years, beloved mother to Melanie King and her husband Carlo Sabucco of Caledon and Stephanie King and her husband Christopher Shultz of Oro-Medonte, and adored grandmother of Amelia and Harrison Shultz.

She will also be deeply missed by her brother Romeo Bonucchi, the extended Bonucchi family, as well as friends and family in the Toronto area and in Italy.

Born August 21, 1951, in Pavullo Italy, Mara was the first child of Sante Bonucchi (1918-1997) and Maria Bonucchi (nee: Evangelisti) (1921-1999). The family moved to Canada, first arriving in Montreal in 1965 and settling in Kingston, Ontario. Fate brought Mara and Edward together at Lino’s Restaurant, and they went on to build a life together, first moving to Toronto, then to Mississauga and Vaughan, before eventually returning to eastern Ontario in recent years.

Mara took great pride in hosting dinner parties, particularly during the holidays, and insisted on managing the kitchen. Her specialties included Bolognese sauce, as well as turkey and roast dinners, though she would relinquish control of the barbecue grill to her husband. Spring and summer were her favorite seasons, when she could take joy in watching her garden flourish with a wide variety of flowers and vegetables.

Family was the centre of Mara’s life, and she cherished time spent together on a beach, whether at the cottage on Georgian Bay (likely with her clubhouse sandwiches) or an all-inclusive resort listening to salsa music, especially in Mexico or Jamaica. Happy hour together often included a toast with a cosmopolitan.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to PSWs Maria and Mechelle for their dedication and gentle companionship during Mara’s final months. They also express their gratitude to the staff at Providence Care Hospital for their care and support, both for Mara and her family.

Mara’s family warmly invites family and friends to gather at:

Saturday, Sept. 28
12:00 pm – 2:00 pm

Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.

___________

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God,
rest in peace.
Amen.

A SHIELD IN THE SHADOWS, Cheryl Bristow

A Shield in the Shadows
Cheryl Bristow

If you are a student of history, a Latin scholar, are curious about Roman times, this is your book. It carries you into the past on winged and entertaining feet. This book is an epic, enthralling and entertaining trip, engaging and captivating with every verbal step.

Synopsis
Early in the 5th century, the Roman empire is in its death throes. The barbarians are storming their gates. Huns, Goths, Slavs, Gauls encroaching or outright attacking the northern and eastern borders of the empire, all with the same goal, to defeat the Romans and take away their rich, prized lands. A Hun attack on a Christian village has unintended consequences. Tribes previously intimidated by Rome’s military reputation now decide to do the unthinkable: attack the Roman empire.

Theona, the female protagonist of the story’s romantic duo, and her father, a Christian pastor, are members of the Goth tribe. Father and daughter, Christian pacifists, are snared by the Gothic mob intent on the invasion of the Roman empire.

On the other side, Roderic, the male counterpart of the duo, becomes a traitor to his barbarian forefathers when he ultimately defects to the Romans.

Balancing this unfolding love story is the conflict between the eager-to-do-battle Gothic king, Radagaisus, an adherent of the old pagan gods embattled with his own people over their growing conversion to Christianity. Radagaisus’ anger and bitterness with Rome’s growing tolerance and acceptance of Christianity are flamed by his greed and impassioned covetousness for the affluent territories across the Danube.

The Roman protagonist, Marius, a nobleman’s son befriends the son of a famed Roman general and the two young men are thrust on to the battlefield much too early for their ages.

The barbarians’ belief and overconfidence that the Roman empire’s days are numbered, its might in decline is premature to their unexpected, and surprisingly unmilitaristic defeat.

Theona, our romantic heroine is mired in the throes of her own emotional turmoil. She is the besotted prize of opposing military leaders, one Roman, Marius, the other a Goth, Roderic.

Much in the way old westerns end riding off into the sunset, Theona rides off on the road to Rome with hopes and dreams that her future will be fulfilled by love and peace.

Richard says
We bestow on you, Cheryl Bristow, the title, “Marcia Aurelia Shakespeare, Lady of Ancient Literature.”

Bristow deserves the highest marks for the epic of this magnitude. It is a treasure trove of historical research and a jewelled crown of late Roman era romance.

The reader is increasingly engaged as the tumultuous turbulence of a war story unfolds. The conflict grows but not in the cliched ways of modern wars. The drama here unfolds on an unexpected stage that no reader expects, nor imagines.

Theona (our Juliet) awaits her lover held off stage, longer and longer, to build the suspense and to keep the reader guessing. Yes, it could happen; no, it can’t. Yes, Theona may pull it off; no, religious roots will conquer emotional urges. The unfolding yin and yang of the romance is captivating.

Bristow plucks the cliched strings of a historical symphony: cruelty and compassion, barbarism and kindness, slavery and freedom. The story intensifies with conflict: nationalism and race, religious factions, the old ways against the new. Bristow conducts a symphony like a verbal ode to joy. The flames of the story are fueled with increasing excitement, intensity and energy: feuding families, feuding generations, feuding armies, and feuding suitors.

The book surprises the reader with its suspense and energized tensions. Who’d have thought the era could have such fury and force. The intensity of the story is relentless in its development. Even when it looks like we might be sinking into the doldrums caused by a prolonged siege, Bristow stabs the accelerator again using the dog, Gideon, to revitalize the joy and happiness only a dog can deliver.

Rather than dwell on minor criticisms, a work of this richness and magnitude deserves unmitigated praise and recognition. Criticisms would be quibbling, nitpicking at a majestic throne of a masterfully written opus.

Bristow, we bow to your creative power, milady!

HEALTH: PAIN ALLEVIATION AND MANAGEMENT

Suffering from chronic pain, never ending pain?

The number of Canadians suffering chronic, endless pain is huge and they spend in excess of $4 billion dollars annually pursuing pain relief, reduction and/or management.

McMaster University has an ongoing study and research area that has produced a report about pain and its management. If you suffer from ongoing and endless pain, you may find some insights in listening/viewing the report.

The bottom line seems to be that most pains can be treated to bring pain reduction and pain relief to the patient but it takes more than just you and your doctor. The best success for pain alleviation or control, seems to come from a multidisciplinarian approach where a team of pain specialist become involved in the process: physiotherapists, clinicians, pharmacists, doctors, nurses and more, all working in focused and concerted effort at managing your pain.

POLITICS: Do you really want this kind of a politician as your Prime Minister?

Here’s the message I got from this Canadian politician who has dreams of becoming the next Prime Minister of Canada…..

Richard, did you see what just happened?

Jagmeet Singh just voted against our NON-CONFIDENCE motion to keep Trudeau in power.

He just chose his pension over the Canadian people.

More taxes.
More debt.
More crime.

Jagmeet Singh is SPINELESS. He’s a fake, a phony, a fraud, and a LIAR.

Common sense Conservatives will never stop fighting for a carbon tax election. And we will never stop fighting for you. But we need your help to keep up the fight. The costly coalition is still ALIVE and well – can you make a donation today so we can keep fighting to give Canadians a choice in a carbon tax election?

There WILL be a carbon tax election where Canadians will vote to axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget, and stop the crime.

It’s time for Jagmeet Singh and the NDP to stop protecting this corrupt Liberal government.”

________________

I will NOT VOTE for any politician who talks like this about fellow politicians. The lack of respect this politician shows is likely the same kind of lack of respect he has for me as a voter and citizen of the country.

Yes, Canadians are stuck with some very poor choices in this election but this man’s attitude helps me decide who I will not vote for as Prime Minister of Canada.

A TIME FOR MERCY, John Grisham

A Time for Mercy, John Grisham

Court room drama that concentrates on the behind-the-scenes legal processes rather than the actual court drama. Nevertheless, the book still is a engaging read.

Synopsis
Jake Brigance, the protagonist of A Time to Kill, John Grisham’s classic legal thriller is back. This time he’s at the epicenter of a sensational murder trial that bitterly divides the citizens of Clanton, Mississippi.

A Time to Kill is one of the most popular novels of our time. It established Jake as a classic American hero—a lawyer who seeks truth and justice at all costs, even when his life and reputation are on the line.

Brigance returned in 2013’s Sycamore Row, in which he once again found himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial.

Now, in A Time for Mercy, Jake is the court-appointed lawyer for Drew Gamble, a young man accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance sees it another way. Once he learns the details of the case, he realizes he has to do everything he can to save Drew—who is sixteen. Jake’s commitment to the truth puts his career and the safety of his family at risk.

Filled with all the courtroom machinations, small-town intrigues, and plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy emphatically confirms John Grisham’s reputation as America’s favorite storyteller.

There is a time to kill, a time for justice, and A TIME FOR MERCY.

Richard says
Grisham delivers a good read, consistently and dependably. However,. A Time for Mercy bogs down in detail occasionally.

A reader who is particularly interested in learning more about court procedures and legal processes in the USA, will find this book to be a bounty of legalese information. You learn about court procedures, about various legal terms and processes in the American system, far more than you may want to know.

The book is a legal process primer nearly as much as a novel.

As a novel, this book has disappointing lulls all due to its insistence on being educational tool for learning about American justice, American courts and the American legal system.

The story is engaging and has many entertaining aspects to it. It evokes readers’ emotions, from anger to sadness as the trio of mother, daughter and son are subjected to extreme family abuse. The abuse is so extreme, the son, Drew Gamble, kills the abuser. The story is founded on the court case against Drew.

Grisham does an excellent job of developing the suspense about whether Drew will be found guilty of murdering a police office, the step father abuser of the family. A verdict of guilty in this instance means the death penalty.

Grisham is a superb writer and this book maintains his status as such. However, because of so much attention to legalese, the book occasionally bogs the reader down with too much detail.

I was also disappointed with the ending. It was a wan way to bring the story to a close, kind of just letting it dissipation into blah !

Because it is written by Grisham, it is still an entertaining read, but it is not one of his best because of his excessive concentration on the legal system and its details in the US.

NEWS BULLSH*T Meter

We have reached the point. Either turn off the NEWS completely or use your personal BULL SH*T Meter to gauge the possible veracity of what is being reported.

Here are some stories reported on the news recently. Think about the possible veracity of each:

  • Michelle Obama’s secrecy about Obama being unfaithful
  • Dog Ford to build tunnel under 401 to cross the GTA
  • Obama children are the result of IVF
  • Haitians eating pet dogs and cats in Springfield, Ohio

If you believe those headlines are valid news, then this short article is a waste of your time.

News today is becoming sensationalism, not informative data, titillating BS meant to excite you and make you a subscriber to that particular news source. It’s more bullsh*t than news, more excrement than veracity, more lies than validity. T**** was correct in labelling it ‘Fake news’  as that is what news is today. Composed, created, developed crap. It’s fraud and scamming gone mainstream!

CTV was recently accused of tampering with Poilievre’s statements to make him look more right-wing than he is. The story died on the vines as most of these headlines should.

The news is fast becoming more bullsh*t than authenticity. The biggest networks seem to be competing for greater sensationalism to their headlines in order to attract more viewers. You’re wasting your time watching mainstream news these days as their material is being increasingly modified to tweak it for attractiveness.

We have written about Fake News more than seven years ago and we stand by what we wrote then. Read that piece at

If anything has changed about the news, its validity, veracity, and authenticity is becoming increasingly questionable with each broadcast. Where once we would have trusted news sources without skepticism or question, today there is no such animal, no broadcast, no network, no news source that you can believe with absolute certainty. Eveything is tainted, tweaked, modified and altered on the altar of profit and gain. The modus operandei is to get more viewers by offering more sensationalism, more excitement, more tabloid journalism. Accuracy, authenticity, truth are disposable commodities to be sacrificed for more profit and gain.

What you need to consider doing
You have few choices when it comes to watching the news: either take everything with a grain of salt and doubt everything you hear or simply stop listening to the news becoming ignorant of what is happening to the world around you. We choose the former. Weigh everything with the  balance scale of ‘is it possible?’ ‘Could this be true?’ ‘Could this be BS?’

If you are finding your news source becoming increasingly questionable about delivering factual news, abandon them, one by one as you consider each. Choose more than one source in finding your news. If the same story appears repeatedly, it may have more than a kernel of truth to it. Finally, narrow down your news sources to your best two or three. You’ll get enough news from them and can ignore the others.

Your sanity, your serenity are worth more than being on top of the news but stressed and strung out to beat the band.

Like scams and fraud, the news has entered the world of skepticism. Be skeptical about it.

CANADA POLITICS: Canadians facing a very difficult election

The next election in Canada may be one of the most difficult ones for Canadian voters. Their list of choices for Prime Minister is a list of ‘unwantables.’

Pierre Poilievre bashes, lambasted and criticizes the government with no constructive policy offers of his own. He skirts promises but clearly damns the government with every media bit. Ax the tax, No carbon tax, Canadian housing is in the tank, immigration sucks. OK Petey, offer something real, something constructive. It’s easy to bash, to rebuild, not so much.

Agreed, Trudeau has the scent of cheese past its prime. He’s an old time politician, slow of the mark, reticent about policy changes, lacking momentum to make changes. Not much he can do to affect a change or positive outcome. His best before date has passed. Voters have noted that calendar passage and now see it as time to give him a pass. In reality, he may be the best choice voters can make, experience, knowledge, skill, charisma, know how, some strong policies, some productive legislation but the best-before-date says it all. Adios amigo.

Jagmeet Singh. He can stand up to a bully but doesn’t seem capable of doing much more. Some might argue, his being partner in a minority government produced some good legislative changes for Canadians. But the politician has ambitions beyond his the practical or achievable. Though Canadians have become more tolerant and accepting, at least publicly, there remain that intransigent nucleus of biased, racist bigots that plague and infect others. We wish it weren’t so.

The other political leaders are too regional, too local, too specialized or too narrowly focused to appeal beyond their small global solar perimeter. They may have local or unique appeal but it is too limited to have federal government significance.

JORDAN HIMELFARB: Star Editor and Head of the Editorial Board

Toronto Star Subscribers/readers will be very pleased to see the major renovation the Star has presented to its Saturday edition: “OPINION  Weekly” section. Opinions, commentaries, and short writeups from select writers are published in the section to spark deeper consideration and more analytical evaluation. More importantly, the Editor and Head of the Editorial Board, Himelfarb, argues that our society is finding it increasingly difficult to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they need that kind of examination and analysis.

Read his full commentary at

________________

As commendable as the new TorStar section may be, it does need to be more selective about the authors it publishes.

Peter Sloly was the Chief of Police when the trucker convoy disrupted the City of Ottawa in 2022.

His piece deals with the digitalization of news and social media. He explains his rationale for the Toronto Police Service adopting a social media communications department.

It’s all well and good, but people aren’t as interested in Sloly as an advocate of social media connectivity as they are in his questionable management of the Ottawa Truck Convoy debacle. It would have been more interesting to hear Sloly explain his thinking during that municipal crisis. Why did he not act sooner? Remove the first offenders who were disrupting the commercial and social normalcy of the City of Ottawa. That would have been a more worthwhile story. Controversial, yes, sensitive, without a doubt but very insightful, very informative and very appropriate for this news section.

Come on, Toronto Star, if this new section is to be as engaging and beneficial as you promise, you need to select writers more carefully or ask harder questions and analyses from those who are selected.

Woe is me…We must find hope, life savers, rafts, something to latch on to

Each morning, it sounds like the world is getting worse. Murder, violence, aggression, war, abuse, hunger, poverty, homelessness…it never stops. And just when you think there’s a pause in this erosion and deterioration of our world, another mentally deranged shooter hits the news with multiple targets. An interesting consideration here: notice how few of these mentally disabled people are men, not exclusively, but few are women. However, that may be a topic that needs more and deeper consideration.

For now, consider all the problems facing our world. They are growing even though we seem to have better technology and more expertise to solve them. But we aren’t. We’re failing, and the problems continue to grow. Why? What are we doing wrong? Where are we missing the appropriate answer to reversing the ever increasing cycle of problem growth. How can we change things? What do we need to consider? Try? Otherwise, the situation will continue to worsen until we obliterate mankind.

Religion? Religions have been the cause of more wars, more social division and increased tension throughout the world for centuries. God may be an answer but not when it becomes ‘My God vs Your God’ and that seems to be the case through all of history.

Talk, discussion and cooperative compromise. We can’t seem to sit at that table for very long anywhere or when we do try, our capacity for hearing disappears. We become deaf to any kind of offered solutions or possible considerations. Why? What has made us all ‘chiefs,’ disregarding every subordinate as being less intelligent, obstinate and inconsiderate while we pride ourselves on being the complete opposite.

“To hell in a hand basket” has never sounded more applicable or appropriate than its application to our society today. How can we rise from this abysmal morassma of moral turpitude and boundless hopelessness? Where can we find answers, possible solutions to this pessimistic road to oblivion? Surely, there are voices in this social miasma that offer constructive, plausible alternatives that may save us yet? Maybe we need to listen more, observe more diligently and give broader consideration to more leaders.

PICKERING: Integrity Commissioner’s report regarding complaints against Councillor Lisa Robinson; A FINAL WORD?

The Integrity Commissioner’s report is very lengthy and can be read in full by clicking the link:

The best way to read the report is to:

  1. Read the groupings as set by Mayor Ashe early in the report:
  2. Then, chose the areas of interest to dig deeper;
  3. Councillor Robinson has been given the opportunity to respond to the report; if she has or where she has, we are not clear. She has responded on X, local newspapers, her Facebook page and in YouTube as far as we can determine.

EDITORIAL COMMENT
Where there’s so much smoke, there surely must be a fire. We have spoken with Councillor Robinson and found her to be determined and passionate about her position. Personally speaking, we found her recalcitrant in her stand. She seems deaf to consideration of any point of view which contradicts hers.

We believe she has a right to her stand. However, when that position impacts on the proper and effective management of municipal operations, we believe she should consider a broader view and give full consideration to other positions. We don’t believe there is any personal animosity or antagonism against Councillor Robinson. We believe the Councillors oppose her position because they see it as being outlandish, extreme and contradictory to the spirit and ethical principles of the community of Pickering.

Reading through the Integrity Commissioner’s report, one can see Councillor Robinson is continually in opposition to the Code of Conduct principles and continually opposes the decision making process as validly practiced by the Pickering Municipal Council. It seems to constantly be a “them vs me” situation with no room for compromise, conciliation or attempt at collaboration.

Sadly, this controversy has made Pickering the center of ridicule and mockery across Canada. Perhaps, once again, a plea to Councillor Robinson to find where she can make concessions, accept compromises without sacrificing her principles might bring about some change. Sometimes, the battle is not worth the war !

Some points of information:

Background and context
The first report related to the use of Facebook for a communication found to be
sarcastic and bullying towards three named individuals who had opposed the Councillor’s request for a minor variance to accommodate a shipping container at her home.

The second report related to Councillor Robinson’s behaviour at a Durham District School Board rally during which she read out three Notices of Motion, indicating that she could not get a seconder for these Notices of Motion from among her colleagues on Council. These Notices of Motion are addressed in detail in the previous reports, but in summary they related to:

  • restricting and removing the City’s support for drag queen story time, flying of Pride and Trans flags at City premises, and any related LGTBQ+ related events and activities;
  • removing the universal washrooms and changes rooms from City facilities, specifically the Chestnut Hills Recreation Centre

These Notice of Motion and attendant commentary were found in breach of the Code as they promote homophobic and transphobic attitudes.

The current complaint indicates that Councillor Robinson has attended several interviews with right-wing social media commentators and has also posted her own YouTube commentaries wherein she reiterates her position on the issues for which she has already found to be in breach of the Code.

Despite the clear findings of the Integrity Commissioner and the subsequent sanctions adopted by Council, Councillor Robinson has not been contrite, but instead has become further entrenched in her position and has taken or created at least 16 opportunities to continue advancing a platform which has already been found to be in breach of the Code.

Santa Claus Parade statements:

Background and Context

Councillor Robinson engaged in numerous public communications, including postings on X (formerly Twitter) and a paid editorial in the Oshawa Central Newspaper, in which she challenged PFLAG’s participation in the annual Santa Claus parade, in some places equating it to the participation of cannabis companies, gun clubs, adult stores, and “strippers”.

Analysis and Findings

Councillor Robinson has equated existence as a member of the LGBTQ

community with drug use, gun clubs, adult sexuality, and exotic dancers, and suggests that participation in the parade is a means to “sell” or “promote” membership in the community. This fails to recognize sexuality and gender identity as an innate human characteristic and instead casts it as deviance from which children must be protected.

____________

Her steadfast refusal to recognize any of her conduct as contravention of the Code or to acknowledge the hurt and harm she inflicts on others through her actions demonstrate an arrogant self-righteousness which we have rarely encountered in our municipal political leaders

PICKERING: LISA ROBINSON, suspended without pay, again

Something’s wrong in the state of Denmark, oops, Durham!

She’s in the headlines again, suspended without pay for 90 days.

Something’s really wrong with either Councillor Robinson or the City of Pickering Council. Are these people adults or are they just big kids bickering in the City’s schoolyard?

We need a definitive clarification as to what is going on with the City of Pickering Council. If Councillor Lisa Robinson has points of value, let’s get them clarified. If she does not, then let’s get that stated.

The latest story from Insauga Durham news:

____________________

The intent here is not to muckrake, or stir up the muddied waters of Pickering Council, but doesn’t the public deserve a clarification about this story?

Surely, the efficacy or productivity of the City of Pickering Council must be questionable if this councillor keeps grabbing the news headlines with her recalcitrance or her monkey-wrenching the City of Pickering Council operations.

We sure would like more clarity to this story. Maybe Councillor Robinson would like to make a clarifying statement about her position? Maybe Mayor Ashe would like to make a clarifying statement about the situation from the Council’s side?

But this story simply cannot go on and on and on. It is wrong to continue the saga on every point, from productivity of Council to efficiency of Council meetings.

What’s the story Ashe? Robinson ?

EDITORIAL: PISSED OFF WITH POLITICAL LEADERS: Here we go again, Food Banks in crisis, need more donations

“Daily Bread launches Thanksgiving drive amid ‘crisis-level’ food insecurity in Toronto.”

Here we go again, another drive for food bank donations. What the hell are these political leaders doing? Charity work, eh! Charity work, my butt. These jerk politicians should be tackle the problem of food anxiety in some other way rather than clamouring for more donations.

These politicians were elected to give us responsible, constructive government. Oh wait, while I go to the corner store for a can of beer. They were elected to give us good government, government that is constructive and effective. Instead, they guarantee themselves pensions while lamenting that food banks need more donations in the media.

Ford? Trudeau? Ashe? All questionable as effective politicians. Some may even be ‘dirty’ as they profit from legislation they passed. And poor people, hungry people, homeless people….oh we are working on these problems. Oh, yes we have been working on them for years but we are still doing so now. We are still urging the public to donate more, more money, more food, more places to live.

What hypocritical situation! Ask the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed, the poor, how they are doing? Ask if the policies legislated by these politicians are working. Ask if the situation is improving? Ask the homeless if their numbers are growing. Ask the hungry where they’re getting their next meal from. Ask the poor how much money they have to ameliorate their situation.

Does Ashe look like he’s starving? Ford? Trudeau? Something is definitely wrong with our system of government if these schmucks continually get re-elected but never solve the problems, never find new solutions to the old problems, never try thinking outside the box.

We have to vote to guaranteed continuation of our democratic institutions but one thing we can do is vote the schmucks who fail in office, out! Don’t vote for Trudeau, Ford or Ashe again. Vote for the next candidate and if they fail at rectifying things, vote them out too. But make sure they never get back into office again. If they can’t do the job, they shouldn’t be in office.

PICKERING: Town Hall REPORT (9-18-24)

Town Hall Report

Ward 1/Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner held another very valuable and worthwhile Town Hall at the Pickering Westshore Community Centre. Though attendance was sparse, the attendees learned a lot of valuable information.

The topics covered included:

  • Youth Council
  • DARS Community Services and
  • Durham Youth Services

YOUTH COUNCIL
A young lady, barely in her teen years, reported young people and their involvement in the political affairs of the city. One would think young people have no interest in municipal politics, but today’s young people find the time to dig into topics we would not expect them to.

According to the guest speaker, Scarlett R., young people feel the state of municipal politics needs their attention, too. They feel the situation is one with little hope for optimism and a positive outlook. They fear their future may be very limited. Debt overload, little chance of owning a home independently.

Scarlett emphasized that there are small cells of youths who are interested in municipal affairs and though these youth have little impact on municipal policy, they are optimistic that they can add their views, comments and opinions to the City Council. They need to feel needed as they have contributions to make. Less than 10% of today’s youth are interested in municipal affairs. They should. After all, as Scarlett emphasized, these young people are the voters of tomorrow today.

DARS Community Services
DARS Community Services is a concrete and very active community service in Pickering, chaired by Margaret Shedden Eskins, who spoke about the major project being undertaken by the community service: an old house, renovated and being modernized by seven formerly homeless occupants. These people are learning skills and capabilities that will help them integrate back into the ‘normal’ world. They are developing skills to help them become constructive contributors in the real world. Carpentry, animal husbandry, and commercial enterprises are the skills that will help them become strong returnees to the world around them.

Eskins spoke about sponsorship of this project. The City seems to have contributed significantly to underwriting its expenses. The province has yet to join the support.

Like the food bank, the numbers do not favour the homeless. Their numbers continue to grow at a discouraging rate. But thanks to people like the Dars volunteers, there is hope that things will change and improve and that people will benefit from projects like this.

Durham Youth Services
Durham Youth Services is a community organization that works with homeless teens and teens from broken family environments and are trying to re-establish themselves as sound members of society.

Families break up for many reasons: poverty, differing life values, and conflicting principles. Be that as it may, teens in these situations need assistance and support to restore them to sound societal contributors.

“Nightstop” is a facet of Durham Youth Services that works to help teens in need. These teens are housed in temporary housing, giving them a stopover while they get helpful advice and guidance from the DYS counsellors.

Volunteers are badly needed to bolster the supply of temporary homes. People who may have extra space in their homes and feel they would like to make a difference in filling this need can volunteer occupancy space for DYS teens to use temporarily. Volunteer drivers are also needed to transport these teens to appointments, meetings and gatherings that aim to help these needy young people.

Spokesperson Leah Wall pleaded urgently for people to consider volunteering in some small way. These young people need help returning to their feet and reintegrating with their surrounding community.

Councillor Brenner
As always, Councillor Brenner is to be commended for creating these town halls where residents can learn about their City. We thank Councillor Brenner for his ongoing efforts and his relentless efforts to keep residents informed about the critical endeavours going on around them in the City of Pickering.

POLITICS: Done like dinner….full stop

The boy’s done like dinner. No way he’s pullin’ this one out of the fire. He’s finished, finito, kaput!

Hard to understand why, really. He hasn’t screwed up anything big at all. No corruption, No big messes. Sure some little things that voters jump on as if they’re  cataclysmic incidents…a holiday on an island gift. Maybe some family issues but they have nothing to do with politics.

The guy’s simply past his “best before”1 date, end of story.

He boasts that he can still pull it out of the fire with a strong leadership presence. Sorry, my man, no way. The people are tired of you. You might be able to come back after Poilievre screws things up, in the next election but this one is done like dinner!

Full stop, no more, nothing more to add!

Poor Poilievre hasn’t got a promise or a policy to piss on. Nothing. The guy promises nothing, describes no policies, says nothing. Just bashes and lambasted. It worked for Doggie Ford. It’ll work of Lil Petey. Say nothing, voters cannot blame you for anything.

What a state the nation is in: leaders that are stale, been around too long, have nothing to say and pull the plug after making plum promises and fragile coalitions. Talk about a lousy bunch to choose from but maybe that is the inevitable. We have used up any good leaders we might have. Now we’ve got weak flakes left, the dregs, the bottom of the barrel. Or maybe the job is so difficult, the Good Old Lord would fail at it, given a term of office.

Well, you read here first: Trudeau’s gone; Poilievre ain’t worth the powder to blow him away; Singh is a lyric-less tune. Go vote….not because there’s anyone of worth to vote for but because we have a democracy and we need to practice it to preserve it.

Otherwise you could have a country like Venezuela with its leader Maduro. Thank goodness we don’t have convicted felons running in this country though.

EDITORIAL: NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh confronts protestor

“Corrupt bastard” was the insulting slur a parliamentary protestor spewed at NDP leader Jagmeet Singh.

The protestor is lucky as Singh holds at least a blue belt in judo and would likely have done serious physical injury to the protestor had the person gotten physical.

How close to political leaders should protestors be allowed to approach or how far should they be allowed to extend their protest?

In this day and age, people are becoming more and aggressive in their actions, particularly in how they voice their complaints and gripes on the Internet. If Singh had acted physically against the protestor, the media would have been all over the NDP leader. The protestor was lucky Singh restrained himself.

CHANGE: SZPIN signature changed

For years, I have used the graphic below for my email signature….

I rode motorcycles for nearly 30 years, with no serious mishaps. I stopped
riding in 2023 as I felt age had finally closed that chapter of my life.

Now as I watch the news, I see motorcycle accidents and fatalities on the
rise, significantly. I think riders are becoming careless, thereby putting
themselves at great risk. Cautioning young people about such risks is quite
futile. I rode with a ‘bobblehead,’ constantly looking out for the ‘killer’
in the vehicle near me. It was a way to ride which likely saved me many
times. I wish I could get younger riders to take note of my riding philosophy.
At the very least, I wish them safe riding as more and more drivers are be-
coming careless on the road these days.

In light of the above and a new hip replacement also, my new email graphic has changed to the one below. I may be slower, but I ain’t finished yet:

EDITORIAL: Looks like it’s over for ‘Junior’! CANCEL THAT….”it’s over for Junior!”

It looks like it’s over for Junior…CANCEL THAT….IT IS OVER !

Here’s what I had written….Every government reaches a point where voter fatigue sets in and the electorate tires of the government that’s in power. Trudeau and the Liberals have reached that point. Two bye elections, formerly Liberal strongholds, have been lost. Toronto St. Paul’s and Montreal’s LaSalle-Emard-Verdun gone. The writing’s not only on the wall, but the Good Year blimp’s announcing the end of the Liberals.

There’s no way Junior’s pulling this election out of the hat. He has nothing new that can attract votes. He has tried every ploy possible to renew his brand, his party. But the voters are tired. They want change. They do not want the return of Trudeau. There’s nothing he can do to pull off a victory this time. The electorate are tired of the Liberals. The good old Lord Himself couldn’t pull this one out of the fire.

Sadly, the outcome of the next election, a likely victory for a very questionable leader, though not guaranteed, is most likely. Poilievre is running a “Doggie” Ford campaign. Say nothing, promise nothing, be vague, make hazy campaign promises, confuse the voters, cloud up voter thinking. The voters are tired of Trudeaus and will bite the bait. Though Poilievre is as close to being a right wing autocrat as possible in our democracy, he is a viable consideration given voter fatigue. Poilievre promises nothing specific. He shouts out cute news bites, ‘Axe the tax.’ This is a political leader of whom the electorate should be wary. But there is no alternative. Jagmeet Singh….are you kidding! The last NDP government, in Ontario, set us back for years in trying to recover.

So what’s the alternative? There is nothing the electorate can do. There is no positive alternate choice. Another minority government would send a definitive message to Trudeau but there is no way we can guarantee such an outcome. The alternative? Hold your nose, vote Poilievre and pray !

A Poilievre minority might be nice but again an impossible guarantee.

There is an answer, but no politician in any democracy would support such a policy. It would be earth-shattering.

Introduce an ACCOUNTABILITY POLICY where voters could electronically hold a referendum to question the continuation of a politician’s tenure. Let the politicians work it out as to the logistics and structure of such a policy, but if a politician’s record is questionable, the electorate would have the power to eject them and hold a bye election.

Such a law will never pass. No politician is going to support a law that questions their hold on their position. In the business world, to quote another jerk, “You’re fired!” is used quickly and decisively when an employee is doing a questionable job. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do the same thing to a politician? Never gonna happen.

So, hold your nose and vote ! Then, pray !

NOSTALGIA: What song was popular the year you were born?

Nostalgia is a powerful emotion, and it’s easy to spend hours reminiscing about days gone by. It’s especially fun to look back at — and of course, listen to — the music that was popular during our childhood. Since 1940, Billboard magazine has been compiling the most widely purchased and played songs year after year. Initially, the Billboard charts ranked songs based on various categories, such as record sales and radio playtime. But in 1958, Billboard unveiled the Hot 100 chart, which compiled those metrics into a definitive list of the top tunes each year.

Let’s look back at the most popular songs of each year of the past century and see the most popular song the year you were born.

SHORT STORY: FERMO goes to school

FERMO GOES TO SCHOOL

I’m an older dog now, but I still remember my younger days, my school days.

One day, my female human and her husband walked me to a new place, a brown building. I had only seen it in driving by.

“Fermo, next week you’re going to go there, in puppy school,” they told me.

Puppy school? Wow, this was going to be interesting, learning for puppies like me.

The first day of school when we walked into the classroom, I was amazed. So many dogs: tall ones, short ones, skinny minnies, chubbies, long hairs, short hairs, long legs and wee ones too. I had never seen so many dogs in one place like that, ever, and so many different kinds.

We sat down, and the teacher asked us to introduce ourselves. The humans said each dog’s name but each dog knew we had our own special way of getting to know each other.

I sniffed the dog on my right, “Hya buddy. I’m Fermo.”

“I’m Priscilla,” yelped the little bushy bundle of white fur in reply. “I’m a Maltese. What are you?”

“I’m a Scottish Terrier. Most people call my type, Scotties,” I barked back in that gruff voice that we Scotties have. By this time, the brown, long shaped, low-to-the-ground guy next to us started sniffing at me.

“Hey, how you doin’? I’m Dutchie, the daschund,” he ruffed.

Priscilla and I circled Dutchie. Sniff, sniff, we went on doing our doggy thing as a way of introducing ourselves.

I was surprised to learn I was the youngest pup in the class, just 8 weeks old but at least I wasn’t the smallest. Priscilla was smaller, Dutchie was lower, errrr, shorter.

One thing that we dogs have over many humans is that all of us are all bilingual. We start learning our second language, humanese, as soon as we come into our new home. Humanese is easy to learn because most humans are very open, very direct, and very loud. Many of them think we dogs are either dumb or deaf because they repeat what they say many times, and each time, they say it louder and louder. They think repeating things louder makes it clearer. They don’t realize dog language has no human words in it. We have to translate what they say into dog language. This can take time, especially if the human words are new or complicated. It’s hard to understand what they mean when they say too many things. It becomes an even harder task when they shout at us.

I am really lucky. My female human is very gentle. Her name is Nadia and even when I don’t understand her, I like how she talks to me.

When she combs me, she is always saying, “Che elegante!” in such a warm and gentle way. I don’t know what she is saying but it sure sounds nice. When she brushes my teeth, “Che bravo che sei” I have no idea what she means but it sure makes me feel nice. I like her a lot.

My male human, Richard, he is gruffer. I know he means well and that he likes me a lot. No matter what kind of weather, twice a day, he dresses me up carefully and takes me out for long walks. If it is snowing and cold, he puts on my fur lined coat. If it is raining, I get my plastic rain coat, all bright yellow and with reflective tape for safety. But I wish he would stop pulling so hard on my leash. And it does become tiring to hear him repeat over and over and over…“Come on, Fermo,” “Hurry up, Fermo,”…“Come on, Fermo,” “Hurry up, Fermo,” Puleeze, I got it the first time.

I really have to teach my humans a lot. They don’t realize that we Scotties have an independent streak in us. We don’t like to be pushed around. My female human, Nadia, I think is learning that more quickly than Richard.

Oh, but let me get back to my story. After the introductions at school, every dog except one was eager to play with every one of the others. Over in the corner, balled up into a kind of defensive crouch was a big, black, long legged Lab and I mean BIGGGG !!! He sat far away from everybody. He didn’t like to talk but we were able to coax some information from him. He was from Nova Scotia, far away from our province of Ontario and this was his second puppy school.

I didn’t worry about the big black lab because there were so many other dogs for me to meet.

In front of me sat Lizzie. She had long blond fur, and wore a pink ribbon between her ears. She told me she hated the ribbon saying, “I think I look silly with it.” She was right, but I didn’t tell her that.

Toby was the tallest dog in the whole class. He was a handsome golden retriever and very proud of his coat, his good looks and his stature. He looked so very intelligent. Beside Toby, sat Fritz, a friendly looking German shepherd with short grey fur. Fritz was big, really big. I thought Fritz had the biggest jaws in the whole wide world with huge teeth to match. Oh, those teeth. Oh my! One would have to be really careful playing with Fritz.

Finally, I spotted the cutest dog of all, sitting quietly under a human’s chair. Her name was Coco and she was really, really cute. She was a Havanese. I had never seen a Havanese before but wow, was she cute!

Well, there was a lot of excitement in the class. We were all new. Everything we were doing was new. It all seemed kind of chaotic, kind of frenzied with all the yelping and puppy barking, and a whole bunch of different doggy voices. Some grunted, some yelped, some whimpered and I even saw one crying. The humans in the room had not yet learned our language, so us doggies seemed to be in charge.

We forgot about the teacher. Her name was Jan and she knew exactly what we were up to at every instant because she had lots of experience with dogs we found out. She made each class a lot of fun and though she was firm with us, she was very fair. All of us liked and respected Jan right away.

We learned something new every day and Jan made sure that it was always fun. We laughed a lot at how each one of us made silly mistakes and we barked cheers whenever one of us showed understanding and success in learning the lesson. It was cool!

At the end of every class, we had play time. We all liked that the most. Jan organized us into small groups so we would all be comfortable. And we just played with our group partners, nuzzling, licking, bumping, and rubbing each other. All of us continued our sniffing and I learned that humans called this “socializing.” Heck, such a big word for just being friendly.

I had never seen so many black dogs all together before. I’m black too. So, I went and hung around with the black dudes. They were all bigger than me, but no one seemed to object to my joining them. Well, no one except the big black lab. But he seemed to object to everyone. He snarled and growled a bit at anyone near him and almost the whole time we were in school. I wasn’t afraid but I sure was curious. What was bugging him? What was making him so angry? It became a more significant problem when at one point he surprised me and snarled at me. He looked like he was ready to bite me. Luckily, Richard, my human, intervened and picked me up before anything else happened. I think he thought it was time to protect me. I think Richard had forgotten. Scotties don’t need protection. We can protect ourselves and, no Scottie ever backs away from a fight. Nothing scares a Scottie. That black lab didn’t know who he was tangling with.

We learned a lot in puppy school. Each lesson had a different goal. We learned not to touch things without permission. This is called respect for property. We learned not to jump up on people. This is called respect for people. I learned to sit, and to be good. This means that I was obedient and I would get a treat whenever I did it right for my humans.

I even got homework to do. I had to practice to sit, to down, to jump, but to not jump on people. I really liked jumping on people a lot, but I learned this was not always acceptable to them, and when I did it, it didn’t earn me any treats. So, I was careful as to when I jumped up on anyone. I did it only after Nadia or Richard said, “OK, Fermo.” Then, I understood it was okay to jump up on people. But even then, I didn’t do it as much as I would have liked because I knew humans don’t like a dog who is jumping up on them, even if he is being friendly.

I loved running around and playing in our back yard at home. There was lots of grass but even nicer, there was lots of garden. Scotties are diggers, you know, and so I could dig all over the place. Nadia didn’t like that because she was the gardener. Richard never scolded me for digging. I don’t think he liked gardening.

Then, I would hear the whistle and when I did, I’d come running back to the laundry room door. I always got a treat. This was a lot of fun and I liked getting my little rewards.

One time we had an assignment for puppy school. I practised my homework with Richard and Nadia every day. The next class, all the dogs showed off what they had learned. When my turn came, I stood up as proud as could be because I knew this command well. It was the “leave it” command and I had really practiced it.

All the dogs were silent as they watched me trot out to the centre of the class to do my exercise.

“Fermo, sit,” said Richard and I sat perfectly with a doggy grin on my face. Richard smiled.

“Fermo, down,” to which Richard added the special hand signal, a flat palm swooshed downward. I dropped like a stone into my down position. Richard stood taller with pride. My chest heaved with it too. We were on a roll.

“Fermo, stay,” said Richard as he walked out in front of me. Then, he bent down and dropped about 7 or 8 little treats in a line, a little ways in front of me. I looked at the treats. Every dog in the class expected me to begin crawling toward them and to get one. I didn’t move. I just kept looking up at Richard who was standing very still. His Fermo was doing his learned stuff, flawlessly. We were both proud as could be and I wasn’t moving, not an inch.

Richard then knelt down by the treats. Every dog now expected me to make a dash for them. They all thought this was the release signal. It wasn’t. They were wrong. I didn’t budge. Richard’s smile grew even bigger. He knew I was doing it all perfectly. Then, he bent over and with his forefinger, he tapped the floor behind one of the treats. I jumped up, ran over and gobbled up that treat. Richard then chose another treat farther away than the next one in the line, tapped the floor again and I ate that treat. And in turn, where he tapped, I ate the treat.

Every dog jaw in the place dropped…even Jan was surprised. An 8 week old puppy able to show such great self-control. Wow, that was really incredible! The dogs all barked out their cheers. “Bark, bark,” “Woof, woof” “Hooray Fermo, you’re great man.” “Way to go, Fermo.” The place was filled with doggy cheering.

I was declared the winner and received a neat squeaky toy for my trophy! I was so excited. Coco, Dutch, Priscilla, Fritz, Toby and a bunch of the others came over to look and to paw me on the back. We all took turns playing together with my new toy. I was so happy that I fell asleep on the way home and dreamed of the wonderful new friends.

I really loved this school and all these new friends.

And so every week we met at the same time and place. I really rushed doing my business outside on the lawn near the bushes because I knew it was very important to arrive to class on time. This means to be punctual. We learned new things like that every day and in every class.

One day, I didn’t want to go to class. I didn’t like how I always had to be very attentive and very cautious around that big black lab from Nova Scotia. But, though I was small, I knew I had a reputation to maintain. Scotties are known for their bravery and their courage. Also, I understood I had a big responsibility. I had to go to class and be an example for the other small dogs. This was very important.

This is what I learned so far in puppy school: do my homework, listen to my teachers, obey my humans, be on time, follow instructions, and be friendly.

In every class we also enjoyed a game.

During our last class we had a contest. The teacher held a timer, and another person was counting. I was so nervous and so excited and I showed it: wag, wag, wag, faster, faster, faster….

And the winner is….FERMO.!  Hey, that’s me! I won! I won the puppy tail wagging contest!!!

I was overwhelmed and barkless. Then suddenly, all around me, again happy barking cheers erupted. All the puppies in class came around to congratulate me, all but one. It was the big, black lab, sitting so sadly over in the corner. He looked so lost, and alone. I walked over to him and smiled. He kind of smiled back, sheepishly. Can you say that about a dog?

I then said to him, “Come on big guy, tell us what is bothering you.” He opened up with the coaxing and told us about his experience in the last school he had gone to, how the dogs had laughed and jeered at his very common name which they thought didn’t suit him at all. It was Rover.

“Hey man, ‘Rover’ is a great name. It’s used in books and dog stories all the time,” I said. “Isn’t that true guys?” I barked out my question to the others. And they all barked back, “Yay, yay, for sure.” Then, Priscilla trotted over and yelped out, “Besides Rover, you’re really special. All other Rovers are always ‘Red Rovers’ but you’re not. You’re a ‘Black Rover.’ Hooray” And everybody shouted out “Woof, woof hooray for Black Rover!”

Rover stood up, tall, majestic and powerful. He sauntered over next to me. Oh, oh! But I didn’t shrink back. No way would a Scottie ever shrink back. Rover bumped up against me and then rubbed his haunches against me saying, “Fermo, you know something? You’re a first class guy!”

“Hey, it’s ok buddy! You’re doin’ just great,” I said to him reassuringly.

We all have special gifts to respect and share and that is how we became friends. Our lasting friendship began on that day.

At the last class, each dog had his photo taken wearing their graduation bandana around their neck and standing beside the school graduation cap. Each of us left that last class, puppy proud, proud of all we had achieved and especially happy for all the wonderful new puppy friends we had made and had become.

I really liked puppy school a lot.

Richard

HEALTH: 3 ways technology can help seniors

Technology and aging: 3 ways tech can lend a helping hand

Sep 11, 2024 – McMaster University –

As we age, our needs and priorities shift, and technology can play a surprisingly supportive role in navigating these changes. It’s not just about keeping up with the grandkids on social media; tech can truly enhance our quality of life in meaningful ways. Here are three key areas technology can help enhance our lives as we age.

Staying connected and engaged
Loneliness and isolation can become real challenges as we age, especially if mobility becomes limited or loved ones live far away. Technology offers a lifeline. Video calls bridge the distance, letting us see and hear loved ones in real-time. Social media helps us stay connected with friends and family and even find communities with shared interests. Online learning platforms open doors to new knowledge and hobbies, keeping our minds active and engaged.

Managing health and wellness
From fitness trackers to medication reminders, tech can be a powerful ally in managing our health. Wearable devices can track our activity levels, heart rate, and sleep patterns, providing valuable insights into our overall well-being. Apps can help us monitor chronic conditions, schedule appointments, and connect with healthcare providers virtually. In emergencies, medical alert systems can help provide peace of mind.

Maintaining independence
Technology can empower us to remain independent for longer. Online shopping and banking make errands easier without leaving home. Smart home devices can automate tasks like adjusting lights or thermostats, improving comfort and safety. Voice assistants can provide reminders, play music, or even read audiobooks, enhancing our daily lives. Transportation apps can help us get around town when driving becomes challenging.

Embracing technology doesn’t mean abandoning the things we love about traditional life. It’s about finding tools that enhance our well-being, connect us with others, and help us live our lives to the fullest, regardless of age. Read through our resources below to learn more about the benefits of technology.

55+: Games Day event – a two thumbs up event

The 55+ Games Day was a “two thumbs up” success.

______________

55+ Seniors Games Day – a Wrap Up

The people have spoken. They loved it, the Seniors Games Day.

Nearly, 100 seniors registered or were “drop-in’s” at the Seniors Games Day event prepared and presented by the 55+ Committee. The participants ‘had a blast’ according to one attendee.

Some of what various seniors said about the event:

“This event was a blast, a lot of fun and a lot of laughable moments.”

“The City should be doing something like this every week!”

“Programs like these should be run throughout the year.”

“Haven’t had this kind of fun in a long time. Do it again!”

Games Day was an afternoon event that had seniors involved in all kinds of games and activities, ranging from physical ones like mini-gulf and safety dartboard competitions to mental games like Trivial Pursuit and Name that Tune. The two hour event could have been extended according to many of the enthusiastic particpants, many of whom added that they would like to see such events put on by the City again and more often.

The 55+ Committee members who were the executive organizers of the event, Andrea, Jenna, Rose, Abby, Elka, Seyon, David and Normalyn extend their thanks to all the participants and their appreciation that so many people enjoyed the event so much.

We’ll be back next year, bigger and better.

NEWS: Rogers, TTC to pull the plug on free Wi-Fi in subway stations

“The Better Way” just got worse!

The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission has been touting that the TTC is the better way. That’s a questionable promotion at its best: inefficient schedules, overcrowded vehicles, late arrivals, erratic service, rash price increases, long wait periods. These have been areas of complaint about the TTC for many years. Some people in Toronto have no choice but to use the TTC, whether it is because of their income, their not having a vehicle, not having a driver’s license, whatever.

The TTC has never been the better way for me. Fortunately, I have a vehicle and a driver’s license. Additionally, I earn enough that I can afford a taxi or an Uber if I need ‘public transit.’ I would never use the TTC. I have used the subway system and the ‘red rocket.’ Even with my limited use of TTC transit, I think it is a lousy service, costly and inefficient.

I am not averse to public transit. I use GO train service whenever I must travel to Toronto from my suburb. I choose to do so because of the horrendous traffic congestion of Toronto. But to consider use of the TTC to get to Toronto…puleeeeze….the suggestions has more ludicrousness than Swiss cheese not having holes in it.

WiFi cancellation
A few years ago, the TTC, in partnership with ROGERS Telecomm, provided transit users with free WiFi service. Many riders must have found this service gratifying and beneficial. I would have it appealing as wait times would be alleviated with email reading and Internet usage. Most likely, many other transit users would say the same.

For the full story ->

And now the better way, once again, becomes lip service. As labelled on the streets, BULL SH*T.

Sure, the rationalization and justification would run along the lines of ‘too costly,’ ‘too expensive’ and the alternate would be fare increases. Does any publicly run organization know how to operate effectively, efficiently with reasonable expense. Public transit should  be operated on a citizens’ benefit basis, not a profit basis. Management that cannot keep costs at a reasonable should have their positions reviewed. Public transit should be subsidized by all taxpayers as it is likely that the majority of transit users are lower income wage earners. They need whatever help that can get. The TTC doesn’t think that way.

POLITICS: Could half of American voters be so stupid?

It cannot be possible that half of the American voters are stupid non-thinkers. There has to be a definitive explanation for why so many support T**** who by any reasonable analysis is a unattractive political candidate, particularly for the office of the President of the United States.

Consider this KAMALA HARRIS vs DONALD T**** comparison:

“We are fighting for you!” “We are fighting for me!”
The state is better off now. The state will be good when I am elected.
Lists real, concrete plans/policies. Has ‘concepts’ of plans.
Constructive plan to deal with each below: Never states any concrete, real plans for the following:
  • HOUSING
  • NO PLAN OFFERED
  • Pro women’s rights,
    Right to ABORTION
  • STATE, NOT FEDERAL , RESPONSIBILITY
  • PRICE CONTROLS
  • NO PLAN OFFERED
  • IMMIGRATION
  • NO PLAN OFFERED
VICE PRESIDENT ELECTED AS PRESIDENT 2016
RETIRED ATTORNEY/PROSECUTOR CONVICTED FELON
Some lies, some exaggerations Haitians in OHIO eat PETS, dogs, cats

The list goes on and on. Both candidates lie, obfuscate or exaggerate but T****’s exaggerations are beyond any limits of logic and reason.

Harris has had a normal, acceptable, legitimate career path. T**** is a convicted felon who was unfaithful with an adult film actress while his wife was pregnant. Not to cast moral judgements, but what kind of ethical values, moral principles, and life guidelines should the President of the United States have? A reasoning, logical-thinking voter is not likely to choose anyone like T****, especially when a candidate like Harris is the alternative.

What’s your opinion?

HEALTH: 22 ways to keep your mind sharp

Brain function starts to decline in your mid-20s; but you can fight back. Follow these suggestions to help keep your mind in tip-top shape.

From the mid-20s, brain function starts to decline, although you may not notice the effects until decades later. When synapses – the connections between the ends of nerve cells – aren’t switched on regularly, the brain finds it harder to store and retrieve information. However bad your memory is now, mental aerobics, good nutrition and moderate physical activity can elevate mental acuity and memory skills.

  1. Cook with sage
Sage is traditionally associated with improving memory. Research has shown that people who take sage oil in capsule form before memory tests perform better than those who take a placebo. The purple variety is best – use it to flavour roasts and sauces or make a cup of surprisingly drinkable tea.
  2. Take ginkgo
The herb ginkgo biloba has earned its reputation as a brain tonic because it has a beneficial effect on the peripheral blood circulation, improving blood supply to the brain. (It helps with piles and varicose veins for the same reason.) Gingko is prescribed to dementia patients in France and Germany. Take as an herbal extract or tincture  following instructions on the pack. Avoid if taking other medication.
  3. Switch hands
Use your “wrong” hand to manipulate the mouse, brush teeth and hair and open doors. This expands the circuits in the part of the brain that processes that hand.
  4. Find everyday mental challenges
Get into the habit of attempting a crossword or Sudoku most days. One study found that people who complete a crossword four times a week seemed to have 47 per cent lowered risk of dementia.
  5. Rearrange familiar objects
Move objects you habitually reach for without thinking in the morning: alarm clock, toothbrush, cutlery, breakfast cereal. This forces your brain to shift into gear early on and may make mornings more wakeful.
  6. Become a lifelong learner
Continuing study through each new decade keeps the brain performing in a youthful way. Book an adult education course (to maintain interest make it a subject you feel passionate about), join a book group or local history society, a choir with a challenging and changing repertoire or try something practical such as car maintenance. The social aspect is important: socializing with others keeps the memory sharp and brain agile.
  7. Learn a language
Enrol in a language school or invest in a course to follow in the car or on the train. Learning languages stimulates the frontal lobes, the part of the brain that most often fades over the years. Book a holiday in a country that speaks the language and start buying local newspapers two weeks before you go. With a dictionary, pick through the weather report, arts and restaurant reviews.
  8. Meditation
Find 10 to 20 minutes a day to sit quietly. Research has found that daily meditation may slow age-related brain deterioration by altering the physical structure of the brain. People who meditated for 40 minutes a day had a denser cerebral cortex than people who did not. In other studies, practitioners of Transcendental Meditation demonstrated cognitive, perceptual and physical abilities equivalent to people up to 10 years their junior.
  9. Three steps to basic meditating
    • Set an alarm to ring in five minutes. Sit with your spine upright, feet flat on the floor, palms resting on thighs. Relax your shoulders and jaw and switch off from everyday concerns. Close your eyes.
  • Watch your breath moving in and out. Let this focus steer you away from trains of thought. If it helps, breathe in to a count of three or four. Exhale to the same count. When distractions arise, focus on your counting or awareness of your flow of breath in and out.
  • Return to regular breathing as the alarm rings and slowly open your eyes. Once you feel easy with the technique, increase meditation time in increments of five minutes.
  1. Enjoy family and friends
Make time most days to enjoy the company of friends and family. In a study from the University of California, those with most emotional support from a strong social network were more likely to retain memory, abstract thinking and language skills — even if those relationships were testing!
  2. Use stimulating aromas
Perfume various times of day with different aromas to establish associations that trigger new neural pathways. Scent the car with two drops of essential oil of basil. Follow your morning shower with distinctly scented body oil.
  3. Holiday senses
Choose a novel scented soap for weekends away. This will stimulate your memory when you use it again as it reminds you of the holiday.
  4. Eat greens
Consume foods containing plant antioxidants, such as spinach and blueberries. An American study suggests this reverses mental decline as we age. Plants also rich in folate have more pluses: researchers found older men who ate more folate-rich leafy greens and citrus fruit had significantly less age-related decline in memory and brain function over three years than those with low folate diets.
  5. Dine on fish
Eating fish at least once a week can slow the rate of cognitive decline in older people by up to 13 percent per year, reports one study. Other research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids in oily fish are vital for the functioning of brain-cell receptors. Eat different varieties — mackerel, sardines and organically farmed trout — two or three times a week.
  6. Include iron
Anemia may cloud the memory with age (iron helps transport oxygen to the brain). Make sure you eat red meat, poultry, fish and eggs, and if vegetarian, plenty of pulses, nuts, seeds and whole grains, dark leafy greens, apricots and dark chocolate. For maximum absorption, accompany with a source of vitamin C, such as freshly squeezed orange juice, and the B vitamins found in yeast extract.
  7. Zinc for thinking
Zinc helps us think (find it in meat, poultry, fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains and onions). Absorption is blocked by a large intake of iron.
  8. Care about choline
In a study of adults over 50, a five-week supplement of choline halved memory lapse. This mineral aids the absorption and use of good fats, vital for cell membranes, and helps the body use a neurotransmitter that transmits signals across nerve endings. Add meat, nuts and eggs into your diet daily.
  9. Try stimulating teas
Incorporate new herbal teas into your day. Lemon balm seems to help the brain store and retrieve information; green and black teas are associated with preventing memory loss with age. Peppermint tea stimulates the brain, promoting concentration and alertness.
  10. Unplug the phone
The constant ping of emails and interruption of phone calls can cause IQ to drop by 10 points, found a study commissioned by Hewlett-Packard, leading to loss of concentration and problem-solving skills. Unplug the phone and resist the temptation to check e-mails for two-hour runs when you need to achieve results. Get up and walk across the office to talk to people instead, which also counts towards your daily activity quotient.
  11. Play games
Games that force you to think ahead, plan alternative strategies, and pre-guess others’ moves are very valuable. Games that advance spatial awareness (useful for reading maps) include chess and draughts.
  12. Problem-solving walks
Get outdoors for a walk to raise circulation to the brain when you have a problem. Switch off from the problem and turn your focus to your surroundings with your nose, ears and sense of touch. Walk backward and sideways to forge new circuits in the brain. After 15 minutes, start your return journey. Now, ponder potential solutions.
  13. Mall strolling
Research with older adults shows that brisk walking in indoor malls is a valuable addition to the 30-minute-a-day exercise rule. See if a mall near you has a walking scheme for a year-round sociable and safe activity.

SHORT STORY: Dog Nanny…Fermo loved this story!!

dogsWhen my family realized that our Golden Labrador, Gypsy, was going to have puppies, we were excited. After all, these would be the first puppies born on our property in well over ten years. But at the same time, a voice in my head said, “Brace yourself.”

As cute as puppies were, they were a lot of work, and the circumstances were far from ideal. To begin with, Gypsy was around ten years old when a certain white German Shepherd came to visit, and she had never been known to be the “sharpest tool in the shed.” My parents knew from experience that Labradors had large litters of puppies. And given Gypsy’s age and the risk of the birthing process, we had no doubt we would be doing more than our fair share of raising the little darlings until they were old enough to place in good homes. We needed help, but where is a nanny when you need one? Enter the doggy-nanny!

2015-02-06_10h38_05

Her name was actually Freebie. She was a German Shepherd that a veterinarian had given us when our beloved Collie had passed away, hence the name. I have to admit that when our parents told us that they were acquiring a German Shepherd, I was more than a little timid. Until then the only German Shepherds I had heard of were military dogs like Rin Tin Tin or K-9s working for the police department. Freebie would make a good guard dog, the general of the yard, but would she act like a pet too?

However, Freebie turned my world around. The same dog who ripped the back pocket off an intruder’s jeans was the one who came to lick my face when I fell down rollerblading in the driveway. She dealt death by whiplash to every snake that slathered into our yard and still made time to play with every pear that fell from the tree. And when it came time for Gypsy to give birth, Freebie was more ready than the human. In fact, she was the one who let us know the puppies had arrived.

When I got up one morning, Mom said, “Melissa, don’t go outside

“Why?”

“Gypsy had her puppies last night and Freebie bought me one of the ones that didn’t make it. Melissa, she was so gentle. She carried the puppy to me in her mouth and laid it at my feet. There isn’t one tooth mark on its body”

Oh my gosh!”

“I know. She then led me to two more of them lying in the yard. Let me check on Gypsy first and make sure there are no more dead puppies outside, and then you can come see them.”

Dogs will naturally separate the live puppies from the dead ones, and in large litters, these deaths are quite common. But that a dog who is not the mother would be shaken by these deaths was something we did not expect. After she had shown Mom where each dead puppy was, Freebie set to work with the seven survivors.

For us humans, puppy duty consisted of building a good pen to protect the mother and her little ones. Freebie may not have helped with that part of the work, but she made sure that the pen was an extension of her yard. The puppies were not intruders, they were her nieces and nephews, and she was going to make sure that no snakes, raccoons, opossums, coyotes, or restless neighbourhood boys would give them trouble. When they whined, she was at their sides. When they scrambled over the walls of the pen, she picked them up gently by the scruff of their necks and plopped them back inside. If one made a jailbreak, she was hot on its trail. And when my dad let them outside the pen to play, she made sure none slipped into the street. Except for the runt, which my sister had to feed with a bottle, there was hardly any work left for us to do.

However, the best part was mealtime, even with the poor little runt! Freebie had been neglected before the veterinarian had found her, so she really loved food. When Dad went to the food container, the guard dog turned into a little puppy herself and started yipping. Mom and Dad said she was singing far her supper. Well, when it was time for her meal, Freebie figured that the puppies needed to learn to sing, too. She not only started the chorus, but she went from puppy to puppy to make sure they did their part before she went to her own bowl. I have no doubt the neighbors could have set their watches by Freebie and Gypsy’s little band.

It did not take long before the puppies were grown, and all but two found homes, but still, every night when Dad came outside, Freebie ran to Gypsy, then to each puppy, and finally to her bowl. Freebie also taught them how to defend their yard and even how to play what I like to call “shake a snake.” But one day, we learned that Freebie had come down with congestive heart failure, and in a few weeks, she quietly passed away. That was the first time in seven years that mealtime was silent, and these puppies never sang for their supper again as long as they lived.

2015-02-06_10h39_06

In the Cajun culture in which I was raised, a “nanny’ is not an au pair. It is the name we call our godmothers because they are deeply involved in our lives. That is precisely what Freebie was to those puppies and to our house. Personally, if I am ever blessed with a German Shepherd of my own, I hope it too keeps away the bad snakes but still finds time to lick away my tears and sing for its supper!

A GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES, Gil McNeil

ROSES

Life hasn’t been a bed of roses for Londoner Molly Taylor lately. Newly divorced and struggling to find a new home and a way to support her three boys, she’s stunned when her beloved Aunt Helena dies and leaves her Harrington Hall, a three-hundred-year-old manor house on the Devon coast, where Molly grew up. But does Molly really want to run a bed-and-breakfast in an old house where the only thing that doesn’t need urgent attention is Aunt Helena’s beautiful rose garden? Or care for Uncle Bertie, an eccentric former navy officer with a cliff-top cannon? Or Betty, his rude parrot that bites whomever annoys it? Yet Molly’s best friend Lola is all for the plan. “My heart bleeds. Your very own beach, the beautiful house, and Helena’s garden. All you have to do is grill a bit of bacon.”

But with Molly’s conniving brother running the family hotel nearby, the return of a high school flame with ulterior motives, and three sons whose idea of a new country life seems to involve vast quantities of mud, this is not going to be easy. And then Harrington Hall begins to work its magic, and the roses start to bloom…

Warm, witty, and chock-full of quintessential British charm, A GOOD YEAR FOR THE ROSES is a story for anyone who has ever dreamed of starting over…with or without bacon. (Synopsis from GOODREADS ( http://www.goodreads.com/ )

Richard’s comments and review

Gil McNeil has written about a dozen books. So one would expect a polished writer as no publisher would keep a horse in the barn if it can’t race. She writes the way I talk when etiquette and political correctness do not restrict my forthrightness and frankness. She reminds a reader of high school when conversations were spiced with ‘fuck’ and ‘twat’ as freely as salt in pepper in a beef bourguignon.

Not my kind of book

Within the first fifty pages, I concluded this was not my kind of book. I’m not a parent, let alone a mother. I am a male who eschews tea unless sick or coming down with something. Fashion design, fabric selection, wallpaper patterns, knick knacks and such are as near to my interest as drying a camel by a desert watering hole after passing through the oasis camel wash. I don’t do renovating and am pleased as punch my wife has no itches to change any paint colours, room furnishings or undertake any serious renovation. Finally, the only interest I have in B&B’s occurs when I am on a holiday and the urge to meet locals is sparked by my curiosity about the natives of the region in which I am holidaying. Thank goodness this spark is very infrequent.

I finished the book

However, as reluctant as I was in continuing my reading of the book, I ploughed onward. I felt obliged or responsible to my fellow book club members. I am happy that I read on.

McNeil writes in a style that is light and airy, catchy and fresh like traipsing through an open field of wild springtime blooms. She intersperses her soap opera of family activities and day to day living with lively language and catchy phrases that lighten the mood on every page. The style is entertaining if not outright magnetic. Still, it entertains and interests, almost making the reader feel that they are actually standing within the scene itself.

The author has her ‘villains’ and her hero(ines) in the likes of her father, Roger, Pete the ex, and the architect who advises her about her B&B project versus Ivy and Lola, female support to the tale. The threads that tie the story together are: her sons and their antics, their growing up and doing all the normal things done by boys that age; and Harrington Hall itself, the ‘estate’ she inherited from her aunt with all its renovation and refurbishing endeavours. The threads suture the reader to the anatomy of the book.

I have no interest in roses beyond my nostalgic memory and admiration for my father’s pride and passion, his own rose garden. I skipped the rose descriptions that prefaced each chapter after reading ONE which made me feel I was reading a wine review.

Bertie with his cannon was a bit of comic relief as was his partner in crime, the yellow headed parleying parrot, Betty. Ivy and Dennis were stalwart employees who carried out the necessary maintenance and upkeep of the estate but more importantly, gave invaluable support to the story as narrated by our primary protagonist, Molly.

Recommended reading?

If you are romantic, enjoy light, gossipy conversations which border on ‘The Young And The Restless,” “Days Of Our Lives” or maybe even “Downton Abbey” then  this book is for you. If you are into “Coronation Street,”  tea sipping and accompanying gabfests, this is your book. The book has humour, light trippy conversation, true to life anecdotes, romantic tidbits and British rural life experiences, written in an entertainingly light and frivolous style. If those kind of things are your cup of tea, then this book is for you. Otherwise, give it a pass.

It is not my kind of reading.

PT-CTRPT: Are govts doing the job expected of them?

I’m giving the Government of Canada the finger, but I extend it to all democratic governments. Why? Because the damn elected leaders continually do work that is either irresponsible, incorrect, ineffective or downright corrupt.

A prime example is the Premier of Ontario. A bullying, baffle-gabbing, wishy-washy politician who caters to what the pollsters present. Give him credit, if there’s enough clamouring he backtracks but by then his cronies and political buddies have already profited from what he has done. You may want to jog your memory to recall all the things Ford has done that are wrong or tainted. Maybe by the next provincial election, enough voters will tire of him as they are of Trudeau and vote otherwise. Stiles, sadly, has no hope in hell as the NDP shot itself in the foot with the Ont Rae government, recovery from which may take a decade or more.

Now comes, the federal government. We suffer unbridled inflation, unregulated price gouging, uncontrolled corporate exploitation of the average citizen. The federal answer, lower interest rates so people can borrow their way into even greater debt.

These politicians cannot think outside the box or lack the cojones to give new ideas and realistic trials. A prime example is UBI, which is a universal basic income. Ford gave it a lipservice trial in Lindsay, ON, but did not have the courage to give it a full try. The claim that these people would be lazy and apathetic, just taking the money each month, spending it and doing nothing else is wrong, wrong, wrong. People, no matter how poor, still have self-pride and self-esteem. Each person wants to prove themselves capable of achieving things. Give them a Basic Income and they put it to use. Instead of indulging themselves, they return to school, develop their skills, or try a business. They try to make a meaningful life for themselves. They don’t take pride in what others call a ‘handout.’ These people are proud, hard-working, and dedicated citizens who have drawn some unlucky breaks that have accumulated until they become impoverished citizens. But they aren’t welfare bums.

Studies are confirming that the economy grows and profits from having UBI in place. Ford wouldn’t even give it a fair try but cut the people off in the trial. They have launched a class action suit against Ford’s government. I wish them luck.

The other jerk, oops, misspoke, the other ‘junior,’ has the Bank of Canada regulating the economy with the tantalizing temptation of lower-cost borrowing. So, the single mother who’s been feeding her kids poverty menus or food bank withdrawals can now borrow money and get herself deeper into financial trouble. Why not think outside the box? Try something like UBI or straightforward grants to people below a certain income level. I would be willing to underwrite that kind of use of public funds. But these damn politicians never think outside the box or have the cojones to do something constructive with time for that policy to take root. But they sure know how to waste taxpayer dollars…and voting in new politicians never changes things. A short time after attaining office, these new politicians are no different than the old, doing the same thing that was being done before. Throw the bums out.

Lower interest rates!  Thank you, Bank of Canada. Thank you, Government of Canada. Thank you, ‘Junior.’ Maybe it is the time to throw you out. But I believe that isn’t the answer. More than likely, the answer is accountability, assessment and throwing out the politician, confirming their worthlessness. Ain’t gonna happen….no politician has the cojones to put in place any accountability policy which would subject them to loss of office for doing ineffective or worthless work. Kind of what happens in the real world rather than the political paradise of politicians today.

A HOUSE IN THE SKY, Amanda Lindhout

2016-01-07_10h11_34

Synopsis: GOODREADS.com
The dramatic and redemptive memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the world’s most beautiful and remote places, its most imperiled and perilous countries, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivity—an exquisitely written story of courage, resilience, and grace.

As a child, Amanda Lindhout escaped a violent household by paging through issues of National Geographic and imagining herself in its exotic locales. At the age of nineteen, working as a cocktail waitress in Calgary, Alberta, she began saving her tips so she could travel the globe. Aspiring to understand the world and live a significant life, she backpacked through Latin America, Laos, Bangladesh, and India, and emboldened by each adventure, went on to Sudan, Syria, and Pakistan. In war-ridden Afghanistan and Iraq she carved out a fledgling career as a television reporter. And then, in August 2008, she traveled to Somalia—“the most dangerous place on earth.” On her fourth day, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road.

Held hostage for 460 days, Amanda converts to Islam as a survival tactic, receives “wife lessons” from one of her captors, and risks a daring escape. Moved between a series of abandoned houses in the desert, she survives on memory—every lush detail of the world she experienced in her life before captivity—and on strategy, fortitude, and hope. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains, in the dark, being tortured.

Vivid and suspenseful, as artfully written as the finest novel, A House in the Sky is the searingly intimate story of an intrepid young woman and her search for compassion in the face of unimaginable adversity.

RICHARD’S REVIEW

Either Lindhout/Corbett co-write a very readable book or the story is so inherently suspenseful, almost any author could have composed this very captivating(!) story.

I think this story may be CBC news reporter Melissa Fung’s story but she was too slow off the mark. Still the book is very engaging, the story very suspenseful and the intensity never really lets up.

My compliments

Every reader will find the story intense, frightening and gripping. Every page seems to have a hook which pulls the reader along to the next page.

Wow, this is terrible…what? It gets worse? How? And then the story gets worse, Lindhout’s situation becomes worse. Just when you think that’s it…it becomes worse again. A terrible situation, described superbly.

Lindhout and Corbett do a great job writing a story about a young woman with a travel bug, a travel itch which finds satisfaction only with itineraries to destinations with danger, locales populated by locos, places of explosive potential. And Lindhout tickled her fancy with increasingly more dangerous sojourns after each safe return home.

Labelling her as being “nuts” is a curt dismissal. She does not have a death wish; she isn’t out to tempt fate; she is not out to skirt the edge of personal fatality. She is sincerely curious about danger, disaster and dystopia. Once she sees journalism as potential for paying for her wanderlust, she is off and running. It all becomes a vicious circle: the more dangerous the setting, the greater likelihood of selling the story. So each tour becomes more threatening, laden with more danger and more potentially personally catastrophic.

Somalia becomes the climax, a country filled with power hungry impoverished young men looking for escape through ransom harvesting of kidnapped victims.

Inured or tedium?

After chapters of frightening descriptions about her capture and captivity, a reader cannot help but become somewhat inured or hardened to the ever more destructive and dangerous situations to which she is subjected. The repetition hardens the reader or the reader steels themselves to the worsening conditions. Certainly, even the most patient reader must be hoping for an end to the endless atrocity and torture.

Ploughing on, even the most hardened begins to wish for an end to it all, though only the most callous would wish for anything other than escape.

Escape she does, this doesn’t occur until page 353 in a 361 page book. Incredible!

RICHARD’S soap box !

Anger and revenge or the desire for vengeance are the negative emotions which sit in my craw, even now after finishing the book.

As I get older, I am becoming more and more angry with men, extremism, religion and racism. Examine almost any example of an injustice, a war zone, a place with social chaos and the leaders are one of the above. Sunnis vs Shiites, religion; Muslims and terrorism, religion; Palestinian and Israeli, religion. If it isn’t religion, then try the racism shoe: Nigger, Jew, Wop, Dago, Spic, …fit? Society is getting worse, pushing the envelope of titillation and sensationalism…try 9/11, ISIS, Charlie Hebdo, Sandy Hook Elementary school, San Bernadino…it never ends…and it likely never will. Not until men no longer lead nations…but watch out here…the devil could be in the details. Women are now joining these forces of evil. They too wear the suicide bomber vests, carry AK47s…so the evil is swaying the maternal…how sad. Is it becoming a race as to who will prevail…pacifist feminity or powerful political and sociological forces which are pervasive and dominate our society today. Add poverty to the mix, indescribable, hopeless, starving poverty and maintaining peaceful societies becomes impossible.

Obviously, I cannot speak from experience living here in relatively quiet Canada. I don’t know hunger (no smart remarks called for here). I am not financially destitute. I know where my next meal is coming from…what it will be is not dependent on luck or fate, but on my own initiative and what I feel like cooking. My bank account is not empty. I can pay my bills. I am debt free. Now take all those things away from me, and maybe I will become like those Somalians. Maybe…but not likely, at least not likely in a single decade, or a single generation. But what if the negative conditions become relentless, repeated decade after decade, generation after generation. Would I be transformed into a man capable of indescribable evil. I would like to think it is not possible…I fear I may be wrong.

So where are we headed? Consider…Donald Trump for president; Kim Jung-un with a hydrogen bomb; the panning of the movie “The Interview”…evil seems to be growing in might, in power. Fewer and fewer woman have real power. That society is acknowledging and recognizing women more and more is lip service. Any woman in power faces overwhelming obstacles, male bastions of power undermining her every move. Sadly, it seems violence only begets violence. My first reaction to Lindhout’s captives was that they should be shot, executed, killed. I am a product of my own society !

PICKERING: updated 9 4 24 – Councillor Lisa Robinson Special Council Highlights Report; with site visitor responses

Point-Counterpoint

Councillor Robinson is throwing darts in her Special Council Meeting Highlights Report but throws hit their targets.

[A link to her Report Video is available below.]

_________________________

Not every point made by Councillor Robinson is completely factual or without valid criticism. Still, she throws enough darts that she hits many real targets. Here are some points she states which merit closer examination and consideration:

  • Cost of $11 million for a Pickering Park development is very excessive;
  • No reasons given for strong push by Pickering for the Beachfront project when the TRCA (Toronto Regional Convservation Authority) has not given the project final approval yet?
  • Mayor Ashe is in conflict of interest as he deals with the Beachfront project while he sits on the TRCA board;
  • Mayor Ashe’s use of strong mayor’s powers eliminates discussion and council examination of numerous issues;
  • Gravel Parking lot in south Pickering to cost $400,000…for gravel surface!!
  • Gravel parking lot will be inaccessible for the disabled based on its surface;
  • Gravel parking lot has no cost analysis published for public study;
  • Skate Board park play lot, $40,000, wash away, waste of taxpayer money.

Robinson seems to have hit some targets dead center, but it is debatable which ones are on target and which ones may just be muckraking and stirring the turmoil pot.

One example is her criticism that the gravel parking lot is inaccessible to the disabled. Other sources rebut her statements: the gravel used is flat, slate-like, and provides a usable surface for wheelchair users. The $400,000 criticism is inaccurate as the money is allotted for far more than just the resurfacing a parking lot.

_________________

Personally, though I dislike Councillor Robinson’s constant badgering, chest poking Councillors in the chest, as well as the Mayor, and sweeping generalizations, all of which feel like bickering and whining more than constructive criticisms. But my position may be very narrow and myopic. Robinson’s biggest criticism or complaint, seems to have some validity, is that there is too little transparency, accountability and explanation for City expenditures. She may be right on that point. She is definitely right in criticism of the codgil of strong mayor powers as a way to cut off fair and needed debate. Other councillors may have voiced their dismay at this power being available to Mayor Ashe.

Councillor Robinson likely has ulterior motives for her statements of criticism. Nevertheless, she raises issues that should be raised and publicly addressed. Yet, she seems to be a lone voice braying in the wilderness. Hear and heed her statements. Then, draw your own conclusions after assessment and analysis. But base your conclusions on thoughtful consideration rather than just hearing words.

____________COMMENTS

Councillor Robinson, thank you so much for reading and answering back to me.  I have not heard back from either of my Ward 2 Councillors (Mara Nagy and Linda Cook), Mayor Ashe, nor any of the other Councillors or Pickering Staff.  I have made the same recommendation as you have that being pave the required amount of disabled parking spaces and a walkway of the same material to meet up to the hard service walking trail.
To build a parking lot as I pointed out in the emails below without ACCESSIBILITY NOR DISABLED PARKING is not only inconsiderate of all people that have mobility/disability issues is not only wrong but not allowed under Ontario Provincial laws.

A second comment…
Mayor Ashe, where was this map that you supplied included in the agenda?  I supplied you with the section from the Provincial laws and rules surrounding parking lots for Accessibility/Disabilities.  No where is the rules/laws does it state that compacted gravel is approved as a hard surface for disability/accessibility parking.  Here are the SOLID SURFACES suggested by the Province of Ontario: “3. They must be marked with high tonal contrast diagonal lines, which discourages parking in them, where the surface is asphalt, concrete or some other hard surface. O. Reg. 413/12, s. 6.  I will be in contact with the Province and Disabled organizations concerning the use of compacted gravel as an approved hard surface.  Compacted gravel especially with heavy traffic such as vehicles will produce loose gravel and freed rock along with ruts and depressions.  Has this proposal been presented and approved by the Pickering Accessibility Committee and if so on what date?  Also, why is there no contact information (email address or phone number) provided for the people on the Accessibility Committee  contained on the Pickering.ca site? https://www.pickering.ca/en/city-hall/accessibilityadvisorycommittee.aspx  I would urge that the City of Pickering consult with the Provincial government and disability/accessibility organizations and obtain there opinion especially the use of compacted gravel as a hard surface required for Disabled Parking and walk ways.

I strongly urge that in the future that Council and Staff do their best homework before a proposal comes to Council for approval.  Accessibility in this day and age should be part of all proposals that come before the City of Pickering and Council.  I am sure there are a considerable number of disabled Pickering residents not to mention that many people from outside of Pickering are also in need of open and free accessibility while visiting.

Response from MAYOR ASHE:

The parking lot meets the requirements for accessibility as there will be two designated accessible spots with the appropriate signage.

The hard packed gravel meets accessibility requirements, and there is a paved connection from these spots to the Waterfront Trail.

We could discuss with OPG the possibility of paving the two spots.

PICKERING LIBRARY: Cobwebs on the shelves, service moribund and aging?

The Pickering Public Library, under the leadership of Jackie Flowers, showed great promise when she took on the responsibilities of Pickering’s library system five years ago.
The future looked very promising, with Flowers enhancing the appearance and services of the largest branches. She seemed to be on a positive and constructive initiative, updating and modernizing the ‘old’ library. Unfortunately, the initial dynamics and energy seem to have waned.

Fermo might disagree…read his recent experience with the library -> BARKside

Considering some other library systems, some smaller, some larger, the PPL seems tired and drained. Flowers needs to fertilize the flower bed of the library, revitalize it and boost its ebbing presence in the City. Three concrete ways way to do this:

  • Launch a newsletter describing the upcoming events and library services;
  • Host occasional soirees with wine and cheese (Oh woe puritanical political governing bodies) to showcase their innovations and new initiatives;
  • Encourage City Councillors, Brenner, Butt, Cook, for their input based on their constituency interaction. They need to do more than just sit on the Board.

The library should not slide into a moribund personification of its old self.

Libraries should be social centers, sparkling hubs, and vibrant hearts that revive and breathe life and living into the City. The Pickering Public Library may be tiring a bit prematurely. Some cobwebs beginning to show.

PICKERING (updated 8-31-24): Regarding exorbitant cost and accessibility of Beachfront Park parking lot resurfacing

The City of Pickering is resurfacing a parking lot in the Beachfront Park area of the waterfront but there are a number of problems with the plan.

  1. A gravel surfacing is bid at $400,000 which sounds like a terribly overpriced ticket. Councillor Lisa Robinson brought up this very complaint at the Special Council Meeting of Aug. 28, to no avail. She was likely very correct in stating that in her books the cost of travelling at that price is ridiculously overpriced. The response from the Mayor’s office was that there were ancillary expenditures involved and taking them into consideration, the price was competitive.

The City needs to examine such bids with a more microscopic view as a $400,000 price tag should allow for resurfacing of the entire city, not just one parking lot.

  2. Furthermore, “gravel”? Gravel is difficult to navigate for many people, particularly people who are physical challenged, in wheel chairs, using assisted walking devices. As one resident wrote:

[ I watch the Council meeting concerning the new gravel parking lot and the Beach Front Master Plan on Aug. 28, 2024.  My concern is that the City of Pickering is building a brand new parking lot made of gravel.  I know that Ontario has specific Accessibility rules and regulations that must be followed especially concerning new construction of items.  There are 4 guidelines referred to as POUR that must be followed:

There are four main guiding principles of accessibility upon which WCAG has been built. These four principles are known by the acronym POUR for perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.

________________________

I am disabled and my mobility is extremely limited especially affected by the terrain that I must use.  There are certain conditions that my mobility and my accessibility is extremely limited to impossible, these being surfaces such as sand, gravel, steep grades, steps etc.  All of these limiting mobility factors can be overcome especially during the preconstruction.  Disabled parking spots and a pathway to the main sidewalk must be a smooth, solid flat surface with no steps.  If one is concerned with runoff then there several types of permeable hard surface including asphalt along with other types that is available.  I am sure that OPG would not mind the affect on their property and their environment when it comes to conforming to Accessibility rules.

Please adjust your plans for this proposed parking lot so that accessibility rules and laws are met with.  There must also be several disabled parking spots included within the plans for the propose parking lot.]

We can only hope the Council reads this plea and takes it into consideration with this $400K plan. ____________________________________ Mike Borie

COMMENTS:

[ The editorial comment about the gravel Parking lot is not accurate.
Yes, gravel costs $400,000. However, that component of the work involves setting up a staging area for the construction equipment since access will not be off Liverpool.
On completion, it will involve additional work on the parking area. At that time, it will include base gravel for drainage plus similar gravel that was used on the West Side, crushed and compacted to enable access for mobility devices. The lot will have designated disabled parking as per Provincial requirements.

The work plan clearly shows both construction aspects.

This plan was also shared with the Accessibility Advisory Committee, who had input.

I am happy to discuss it with you, but I felt you would want to know the facts.

POINT-COUNTERPT: Cell phones or teacher methodologies, chicken-egg debate of education today

Is it cell phones or teachers eroding the effectiveness and success of education today?

British Columbia has banned cell phones, ‘bell-to-bell,’ from schools in the province. [ ] It’s very commendable to finally hear some political leaders have the cojones to lead rather than yield to the clamor of the masses, especially the young.

At the risk of overgeneralizing and jumping to a sweeping solution, schools today may deserve criticism for doing a less-than-excellent job educating our children. It may be a moot point. What is an excellently educated child? Can they count? Who needs to be able to count when they have a device that will do it for them accurately? Where’s Sri Lanka? Micronesia? Burkina Faso? I don’t know, but give me a second, and I’ll tell you as I use my device.

Education is more than readin’, ritin’, and ‘rithmetic. It’s about thinking, evaluating and analyzing. It’s about morals, principles and ethical values. It’s about responsibility, respect and obligation. There are many skills and tools in life that cannot be derived from a technological device. No cell phone can teach social values, moral principles, right from wrong, DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion), or the value of discussion and debate. No cell phone can assess and evaluate the wrongfulness of violence. A teacher is needed to teach about those inadequacies.

Before criticizing teachers and the education system, perhaps we should ask if education fails as much as some claim. How do we know it is? That may be the problem of our education system. As some have said, “You can’t expect what you don’t inspect.” And that may be the flaw in our education system. When graffiti is plastered over buildings and public place walls, when bullies act in the schoolyard, when the ‘Harvey Weinstein’ types denigrate women freely and openly in the office, in the military ranks, when the old are abandoned to ‘warehouses for the worn,’ we might conclude education has some inadequacies. The education system may need examination review and revision.

Today’s culture seems to continue the “old boys’ club,” or there are too many captains and not enough deckhands. Maybe we need captains who can think outside the box and are willing to pick up the shovel and do some digging themselves. Is it possible? Is it likely? Can it be done? Our kids would sure be better educated if it were done.
